2019 Nissan Frontier Pro 4x – Today’s Nissan Frontier is so old, you could have taken one to the Blockbuster for Halo 2’s midnight release. Since then, the midsize truck market has changed as much as the Halo franchise. Yet the Frontier has remained largely static throughout, a steady and relentless bailout for a 2008 facelift. Nissan’s reasoning is that as the cheapest pickup truck you can buy with a warranty in America United, the Frontier is a good deal and worth keeping.
That might be true of the base model, but it’s not necessarily true of the entire Frontier lineup. Take the pricey Pro-4X off-road version, for example, designed to hold its own against experts like the Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road and notable newcomers like the Ford Ranger FX4 and Jeep Gladiator. Pricing is similar: All three start at around $34,000 in a crew cab, and Nissan’s typically generous incentives are hard to find on the Frontier Pro-4X. So the value angle is gone and what we’re left with is a nice old truck that just doesn’t measure up to the modern competition.

Deemed “average” by Edmunds in 2004, the Frontier’s cabin didn’t change much for the better (if at all) over the next fifteen years. The plastic looks like a cheap outdoor toy. It only took 7,000 miles to stretch and loosen our tester’s embroidered, power-adjustable seat covers, which aren’t even that comfortable to begin with. The lack of a home button is either a disappointment or a welcome return, depending on his point of view. It’s the worst interior for its price in the midsize truck class given the $36,000 price tag of this particular Pro-4X; The Ford Ranger requires a few yawns for even an older truck, but at least it has comfortable seats.
It’s a shame that even the fun off-road parts you get with the Pro-4X—Bilstein shocks, skid plates, and lockable rear diff—are equipped with long-outdated technology. Forget Apple CarPlay or Android Auto (there’s only one USB port anyway). The most important features of the standard NissanConnect system, such as integrated navigation, are replaced by a smartphone in the cup holder, making its inclusion seem like a useless extra cost. To take advantage of the discount aspect and stay relevant, you need to skip the intermediate goals and stick to simplicity to bring the price down. Let buyers include the Pro-4X package on a Frontier S with manual crank windows. Yes they still sell them.

However, there are some amenities. Frontier’s premium Rockford Fosgate stereo is still capable of hitting the high notes in its old age. Dual-zone climate control is a welcome addition, an expensive extra on the Ranger and Tacoma, as are heated front seats. The connected security camera comes in handy whether you’re hiding in a parking lot or putting the couch in the county dump. This is all pretty standard.
The 2019 Nissan Frontier Pro-4X remains competent to haul, tow and tow, despite its advanced age. But the same goes for all Frontiers, right down to the infamous sub-$20,000 pickup, so the Pro-4X really should be priced when the going gets tough. It’ll maintain firm footing on all but the worst surfaces thanks to its 31.6-inch off-road tires, low-range all-wheel drive, and locking rear differential. Together, these will get you out of whatever mud pits the unpredictable Rocky Mountain summer rains can throw at you, even if you’re halfway up a hill; That’s what Hill Start Assist is for. And the Pro-4X’s full-size Bilstein shocks and replacement parts mean some crap can still be done.
All in all, the Pro-4X is more comfortable the further you move it from yours. The truck’s age highlights many problems on the road, but it also makes it much more attractive to drive than most midsize float cars, and seems less removed from the mayhem of the road. That’s not to say it’s uncomfortable; Bilstein shocks really manage the balance between drivability and durability, providing a pleasant ride and confident handling. The Frontier is simply cut from a different cloth than anything developed this decade.
Nissan Frontier Turned Into $40,000 Overlanding Rig
Thanks to the lower waistline of the cab, which makes it easier to position the truck in off-road situations or in particularly tight parking spaces. Even the smaller size shines in both situations, and you’ll notice a reassuring weight to the old handlebar mount. Throttle response doesn’t betray its electric-driving nature, though the V6 is better at making noise than producing quick acceleration, and the Frontier’s braking feel has to beat many modern trucks. Fuel economy isn’t great, due in part to the five-speed automatic, but it’s on par with the Ranger and Tacoma and isn’t exactly the top priority for off-road truck buyers.
That said, much of the fascination stems from a subjective love of anachronistic machines. Those looking for a whole new experience behind the wheel won’t find it here. Unfortunately, they won’t even find a compelling reason to buy one when you get to the heart of the matter.
By itself, the 2019 Nissan Frontier Pro-4X isn’t a bad vehicle. It handles everything you could ask for in an offroad truck, from pulling Airstreams to galloping through real streams and always being a decent drive. But the Frontier Pro-4X doesn’t exist in a vacuum, and finding itself priced the same as the more capable and compelling offerings from Ford, Jeep, Toyota, and GM doesn’t do it any favors. They say age is just a number, just like $34,290. Other than the dubious appeal of an old-school truck with a warranty, there’s very little to make the case for spending that much money on this truck.

An argument for a gently used Frontier Pro-4X (remember, still the same truck) or to play hardball at the dealer, especially since the new 2021 model is coming out next year. Let’s just hope Nissan gets it right again, because it has a lot of ground to catch up over the next decade. The Nissan Frontier is a small truck that continues to win the hearts of customers looking for an affordable and reliable truck. Just before checking out the Million-Mile Frontier at the Chicago Auto Show, I was able to spend a week in the 2019 Nissan Frontier Pro-4X to see what all the fuss is about.
There’s no doubt that the Frontier needs some updates, but there are several big reasons why this little truck continues to play an important role in an increasingly competitive segment.
Starting at less than $20,000, the Frontier is priced right. I spent the week in a 2019 Nissan Frontier Pro-4X Crew Cab with a V6 engine and automatic transmission. Pricing starts at $34,190 and the $2,100 Premium Package adds heated leather front seats, dual power heated outside mirrors, power glass moonroof, roof racks and folding center armrest. If you add the mats and the destination, the total cost of my loan is $37,440.

The optional V6 packs plenty of power under the hood, and in the Pro-4X you’re ready to take on off-road work and adventure. The transmission is smooth and the automatic changes are timely. It’s a five-speed manual transmission, which is what the million-mile Frontier is equipped with, and it won’t be available in 2020.
It is easy to drive and quite maneuverable due to the size of the truck. The V6 is responsive when you need power, and while it’s not incredibly fast, it is for a small truck. Although the steering is more flexible than that of the newer trucks in this segment, the Frontier still feels lively in traffic. The suspension absorbs the worst of the road, so you end up with a comfortable ride. If you plan to take the Frontier off-road, the Pro-4X model is a great trim level to choose, you get off-road shocks and off-road tires.
Towing capacity ranges from 6,100 to 6,500 depending on the Frontier purchased. It’s behind the Ranger and Gladiator, so you’ll have to do the math based on your current and future needs.
