Available in EX, EX-L and Planet trims, the standard four-wheel-drive hybrid uses a pair of electric motors and a 2.0-liter turbo-4 making 212 horsepower. The hybrid is smoother with less punch than the gas model. Its biggest asset is an EPA-rated 40/35/38 combined mpg.
The CR-V’s biggest asset is its ability to comfortably seat five passengers, thanks in part to more than 40 inches of rear seats and nearly 40 cubic feet of cargo space. The 2022 Honda CR-V gets the job done when the job calls for thrills or excitement. Most drivers don’t like Bartlab, which is why the CR-V’s overall performance averages 5.
All-wheel drive is standard on the hybrid model, but it’s a $1,500 optional upgrade from front-wheel drive.

For a 12-way power driver’s seat with lumbar support, choose any of the EX or Hybrid models, but the manual cloth seats on the LX and SE are also adequately supportive. Leather adorns the EX-L and Touring trims and transforms passenger power. A high seat with a low seat and wide windshield provides an impressive view of the road and some interior quietness. Deep door pockets and a deep center console allow for plenty of storage.

In the back, three passengers can fit, with the doors open, almost flush with the front passenger’s headroom. Rear-seat comfort is top-notch, with 40 cubic feet of cargo space (33.2 cubic feet with the hybrid engine) or 75.8 cubic feet with the rear seats folded down 60/40. A low load is good for the dog and its back.
While understated, Honda finishes the CR-V with soft-touch materials that look like the top-of-the-line Touring models are wrapped in wood-like trim.
According to NHTSA’s five-star crash rating and IIHS’s highest safety rating, the Honda CR-V is crash-resistant. It adds two points to our score, and standard automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, active lane control and automatic high beams get another point. Outward visibility is good thanks to wide mirrors and slim rear pillars, earning it another point as a 9-pointer.

Good quality safety features outweigh the basic LX’s comfort features. Avoid 5.0-inch screens and smartphones that don’t fit the SE. The SE is another value that scores us a 6 on our scale.
And at $1,200, the hybrid strikes us as the best value when considering cost-of-ownership factors like fuel economy. But if AWD isn’t important, the $28,175 SE model offers better value features, including a 7.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, keyless entry and start, and heated front seats.
