After unveiling the all-new redesigned 2022 Frontier in the fall, Nissan’s design studio has developed three concept trucks that will debut at the 2022 Chicago Auto Show.

The three concepts, Project 72X, Project Hardbody and Project Adventure, are all based on the 2022 Frontier Crew Cab platform. Each is aimed at three different midsize truck audiences and starts with three different Frontier trim levels – S, SV and PRO-4X.

“Today’s truck culture is so broad – off-roaders, boaters, surfers and kayakers, environmentalists, outdoor fishing and hunting enthusiasts and more,” said Hiren Patel, chief designer, Nissan Design America, Inc. in a press release.
“The common ground is that they all use their trucks as canvases for customization. We offer three styles to see how they can customize their own new Frontier.
All three Frontier concept trucks are built from available Nissan and aftermarket parts and accessories, with custom parts and graphics.
Nissan Debuts Three 2022 Frontier Concepts At The 2022 Chicago Auto Show
Based on the 2022 Frontier Crew Cab S 4×4 class, the Project 72X is a modern take on Nissan’s classic Datsun 720.
The 720 was first introduced in the fall of 1979 and eventually became the first car Nissan built in the United States at its Smyrna, Tennessee auto assembly plant in 1983. Nicknamed the “Lil Hustler,” the affordable truck was promoted for outdoor enthusiasts.
The 2022 Nissan rendition consists of gray exterior tones and white painted steel wheel graphics. The rig rides on 2022 Frontier spare tires wrapped in PRO-4X tires. The Project 72X has a 2.5-inch Calamini lift with adjustable upper suspension arms and a sports bar behind the cab.

The Hardbody project pays homage to the Nissan D21 “Hardbody,” which was the first truck design completed at Nissan Design America. The name “Hardbody” comes from the double wall bed and the aggressive stance. The design is a champion in on-road and off-road competitions.
The latest Project Hardbody is built on a 2022 Frontier Crew Cab SV 4×4. The build features a 3-inch lift kit with an adjustable upper control arm, carried over from the current PRO-4X model.
It rides on Nissan Design America’s classic Hardbody block wheels wrapped in 33-inch BFGoodrich All-Terrain TA tires. There is a spare tire holder on the bed.

The concept truck features a sports bar with modern 10-inch rectangular LED lights, a blacked-out front fascia and ’80s-style shadow contour door graphics.
The latest concept is Nissan Design’s take on the industry’s landing trend. The Project Adventure is based on a 2022 Frontier Crew Cab PRO-4X. It comes with a 5″ lift kit, 34″ mud tires. The build includes a Yakima bed support system, a Yakima LoadWarrior roof basket, a tent, and a Bluetooth bed audio system from Kicker.
The main feature of Project Adventure is the custom packaging, which is a representation of the U.S.

The concepts will not be sold, but some of their elements will be available for buyers to upgrade their Frontier through a Nissan dealer or aftermarket specialty shop.

Nissan Debuts Trio Of 2022 Frontier Concepts At Chicago Auto Show
Overlanding has become very popular among import people. Moving from their sport compacts to midsize trucks, these newcomers are excited about the limitless opportunities for exploration that naturally come from off-roading. One of the big names in that world is NISMO, which is an acronym for Nissan Motorsports. Now they’re looking to add some performance and pop to Nissan’s midsize vehicles, including the 2022 Frontier.
At their booth at the 2021 Overland Expo West in Flagstaff, AZ is a 2022 Nissan Frontier decked out in NISMO Off Road parts. Many of the parts are specific to country enthusiasts, but not all. Many of these parts are also compatible with older models, such as the Xterra from 2005 to 2015 and the Pathfinder from 2005 to 2012. However, the 22 Frontier takes center stage.

That 2022 Frontier is ready for pure land adventure. On its roof is the roof tent. The two are made for each other, but the tent can be attached to most any roof rack. It weighs 132 pounds but can support up to 600 pounds. It’s also roomy, about eight feet long, 4.6 feet wide, and 4.2 feet tall in the middle. Getting out is easy thanks to an adjustable aluminum ladder that extends nearly seven feet.
Overland bed support should not be overlooked either. Two versions are available – a low and a high. The tall version was introduced in the 2022 Frontier and fits the 2005-2022 model years. That’s because it can be attached via the Nissan Utili-Track system or directly to the top of the bed.
A shining example is the four-inch NISMO Off Road light. It has a high beam model with a power of 3,060 lumens. It’s all LED with two amp draws and wiring for the white backlight without driving the main LEDs. These round lights will also be available for the 2005-2022 Frontier, 2005-2015 Xterra, and 2005-2012 Pathfinder.

While driving the Frontier in person, I spoke with Carl Phillips, Motorsport Manager for the Nissan Group in North America. “Nissan Motorsports’ goal with NISMO Off Road is to provide Nissan owners with a range of off-road products that enhance the performance and capability of Nissan’s popular trucks and SUVs,” said Carl . “As an aftermarket alternative to Nissan, we’re making it easier for our owners to purchase NISMO Off Road products through their local dealers. The lineup is currently available for the current and previous generation Frontier and to the second-generation Xterra.Plans for future products include the Titan, Pathfinder and Armada in the coming year.

Should You Lift Your 2022 Nissan Frontier?

In 2020, NISMO released some great off-road parts for Nissan’s Frontier midsize pickup. This truck’s accessories include a suspension kit, a beefier bumper, AXIS wheels and road lighting.
But for 2022, the small truck looks completely different, and Nissan’s performance division is on the trade, adding 4 more items to the list, recently announced in Flagstaff, Arizona at the Overland Expo West.
Although Nissan promises to make the full catalog available in 2022, these Frontier parts can be purchased through dealers or on the NISMO parts website. Here’s a closer look at the new 4-inch lights, bed rack, roof tent, performance exhaust.

With an output of 3,060 lumens, the new 4-inch NISMO Off Road lights offer a road beam pattern for maximum off-road illumination. This light has a dedicated wire that makes it possible to run a white backlight without the main LEDs. Also, to ensure minimal impact on the Frontier’s electrical system, the light has a minimum current draw of two amps. Constructed from water-resistant aluminum, the cases include pressure-equalizing vents, providing robust protection against the elements.
However, these lights will only be available in early 2022 for every Nissan vehicle, with specific mounts coming for the 2022 Frontier.
Another important component available is the NISMO Off Road Overland bed rack. Made of powder-coated steel with a modular design to suit different needs, the bed stand is available in both high and low. Installation is easy as it can be attached to the Utili-Track system or to the top of the bed.

The top version is available now, while the low-end version will be available in early 2022. One impressive thing to note about this part is that it will not only fit the 2022 Frontier, Nissan has revealed that it can also be used in all Frontiers produced between 2005 and 2022. .
