Acura Rdx 2021 Advance Package – The sport-luxury crossover space offers many options, but the Acura RDX has a price and a reputation for reliability that German brands can’t match. Acura’s midsize crossover offers superior build quality, a luxurious interior, an engaging yet refined ride, plenty of standard features, an overdose of technology, and an MSRP that starts at just over $38,000.
The third-generation RDX arrived in 2019 as the first in a series of redesigned vehicles designed to restore the Acura name to its former glory. The 2021 RDX is still powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that generates 272 horsepower through Acura’s Advanced Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) system (optional). With its sleek, chiseled looks, athletic handling and sophisticated ride, the RDX offers great value and plenty of style in a typically expensive market. We borrowed one from Acura for a week to see how it compares to competitors like the BMW X3 and the Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class in its third year.

Acura hasn’t made any significant changes to the lineup for 2021, although it did introduce the new Acura RDX PMC Edition. Handcrafted alongside the NSX at Acura’s Performance Manufacturing Center, the RDX PMC remains mechanically unchanged but features a number of bold aesthetic enhancements. These include Thermal Orange Pearl paint, 20-inch gloss black wheels, Ebony Milano leather sport seats with Ultrasuede inserts, and orange stitching. Only 360 units of the RDX PMC will be produced for the US market.

Compared to the German competition, the price is one of the RDX’s strengths. The base RDX has a starting MSRP of $38,400 in the U.S. With the Technology package, the price jumps to $41,300, while the A-Spec package costs $44,300. The RDX with the Advance package tops the list at $46,200. All models come standard with FWD but can be upgraded to AWD. for $2,000 more, in this case the Acura RDX with all-wheel drive and the Advance package costs $48,200.
The limited edition RDX PMC, limited to just 360 units, will start in the low $50,000 range, although Acura had not revealed an exact price at the time of this writing. This model comes standard with all-wheel drive. All models after the PMC Edition are subject to a $1,025 destination charge. This version, which is hand-built alongside the NSX at the brand’s Performance Manufacturing Center in Ohio, has a higher MSRP of $1,995. Despite a slightly higher MSRP than last year, the Acura RDX is priced well below its premium competitors from Audi and BMW, despite many standard features.
Our test vehicle was available in A-Spec trim, meaning it features a firmer suspension instead of the standard RDX adaptive dampers. Despite the firmness, the suspension is soft enough to absorb potholes and uneven roads and keep the chassis reasonably flat in corners. When you move the RDX back and forth, the body is a little slimmer, but the ratio can probably be seen as a balance between performance and comfort. If you want a more relaxed ride, you’ll have to stick with the base equipment or upgrade to the Advance package for adaptive dampers.

In normal driving, the RDX is quick, responsive and confident. The 10-speed transmission is well programmed and smooth for city or highway driving. Sport mode adjusts response and has an immediate impact on performance, while Sport+ mode creates a big change in the vehicle’s attitude. The steering gains weight, throttle response increases dramatically, and additional engine noise penetrates the interior. The SH-AWD system is exceptional when it comes to supporting driving behavior through torque vectoring.
While it’s a lot of fun to drive, enthusiasts who want to have fun every day will be frustrated by a chassis that deserves more engine power. For everyone else, the engine offers everything you need for daily driving and occasional thrills.
The quick and easy answer to this question is: yes. As a value proposition it is excellent. The Acura RDX is more than that, though: It doesn’t feel like a car built to undercut the competition, but rather on its own terms. It is not as technologically rich as an Audi, nor as powerful as a BMW, nor as luxurious as a Mercedes. But it doesn’t try to be that way. The RDX aims to be your reliable all-rounder at the right price. It looks good, has quality and is available at a reasonable price.

In terms of value for money, the base model is a fantastic buy for a comfortable and useful everyday family vehicle. However, we opted for the RDX with the Technology package to enjoy the added style, as well as the Milano leather-trimmed seats and the excellent Acura/ELS sound system. The A-Spec trim is largely a visual package that doesn’t offer much value, but it looks really good.
We choose the Advance version if we know that we have rear passengers regularly and that we will drive many kilometers to take advantage of the active shock absorbers.
When it comes to the SH-AWD system option, we highly recommend it. It’s not necessary, but it’s also not an option for all-time drivers. It brings the chassis to life for people who enjoy driving and provides an extra layer of response to avoid problems when they appear on the road.

At the time of writing, Acura had yet to fully reveal the spectacular new MDX. However, the third-generation 2020 model is still a solid crossover with seating for seven people in a three-row configuration. This and about 15 additional cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row compared to the RDX make the MDX a better choice for larger families. However, the third-generation MDX has been around for a while, and the clunky infotainment system, average interior materials, and poor automatic transmission are testament to that. The MDX has a more powerful V6 engine and a much higher maximum towing capacity, up to 5,000 pounds, and is surprisingly almost as efficient as the RDX, but we still chose the latter in this comparison. The RDX is the cooler SUV with fewer defects, costs more than $5,000 less, and is the better choice unless you really need the extra space of the MDX.
The Honda CR-V is a slightly smaller but more affordable vehicle compared to the RDX. Starting at more than $10,000 less than the RDX, the CR-V represents a significant savings but offers a spacious cabin and an even larger trunk for all your belongings. The CR-V isn’t as quick as the RDX with a 1.5-horsepower, 190-horsepower turbocharged engine, but it is significantly more efficient and gets about six more mpg in mixed driving conditions. The RDX is better equipped, the base CR-V lacks features like a power driver’s seat and a leather steering wheel, but the Honda doesn’t feel right. Both crossovers are fun to drive but remain comfortable on the road. Beyond the conventional badge, the Honda is a fantastic performer, but the RDX does enough to justify its premium market positioning.
