Painting the exterior of your home is a big decision. Unlike repainting a kitchen, changing the color of a house’s facade can’t go wrong – it’s an expensive endeavor that can take decades to create a streamlined appeal that’s visible to all passers-by.
Benjamin Moore Paint Colors Inspired By An Historic Home Near Me
A new exterior design service helps homeowners think about their home’s potential and avoid the mistake of choosing the wrong paint or stain color.
We’ve partnered with Benjamin Moore’s Color Director Andrea Magno to curate a highly curated list of exotic color schemes available to clients as part of their exterior design packages.
CEO Allison Messner sits down with Andrea to learn more about choosing a new paint or stain for your home’s exterior. The goal: to create a “well-thought-out” home. (Andrea’s Wise Words) Here’s What We Learned!
Best Selling Benjamin Moore Paint Colors
“When it comes to exterior paint color, many people don’t know where to start,” says Andrea Magno, color director at Benjamin Moore. Andrea’s advice: “Look at your landscape.” When choosing house colors, consider choosing a soft landscape and a hard landscape. If you lean toward cool-toned hardscapes like pea stone, bluestone, or concrete, and plants like sagebrush, grasses, olives, or agave, choose a cooler color for your home like Nimbus Gray or Decorator’s White. If you’re interested in warm-toned hard landscaping and plants, choose color combinations that complement your home’s exterior—for example, warm browns, shades of purple, browns, grays, and greens.
“We find that many people choose a color palette based on the topography and climate of their area,” says Andrea. “The world becomes a point of inspiration.” In the Southwest, many homeowners choose organic, refreshing color combinations that they see in the surrounding nature. In the Pacific Northwest, “we see many spots and deep colors that evoke local forests, skies and seas.”
It’s also helpful to research the architectural style of your home. For example, Craftsman-style homes often use earthy and jewel tones in exterior paint colors, while Traditional homes look best with cool neutrals with high-contrast finishes, while Spanish homes look best with warm neutrals. We often see people choosing their landscaping based on the architectural style of their home, but we love when people switch it up – a modern home with a traditional English garden can look amazing. We also see many people moving from traditional homes to modern, low-maintenance backyards.
Benjamin Moore Iron Mountain 2134 30: Paint Color Review
When it comes to exterior paint color or stain, there is no “right” choice – choose something that “sparks joy.” To find the seed, think about something that inspires you, whether it’s painted doors in Italy or rustic cabins in Montana. Or maybe it’s the white exterior of the farmhouses you grew up in (like the one above). Let this inspiration guide your color ideas.
One thing that many people don’t realize is that Benjamin Moore rates their paints by LRV, which stands for Light Reflectance Value. Andrea explains:
“Light reflectance (or often abbreviated LRV) refers to the amount of light reflected from a surface when illuminated by a light source, such as the sun. LRV is measured on a scale of 0-100, with 0 being the lowest LRV and 100 the highest. LRV is documented in Benjamin Moore’s Vent Covers.
The Best Benjamin Moore Neutral Colours
It’s important to keep LRV in mind when choosing a paint color for your home to reduce energy consumption. In warmer climates, choose a high LRV paint to reflect light, keep your home cooler and require less air conditioning. In cold climates, the situation is reversed. For those located in the north, consider low LRV paints that absorb heat and help offset heating costs.
Architectural details often bring a home to life, so don’t forget the accent. Using gloss paint to highlight interiors, windows and front doors can make a huge difference to the overall look of outdoor spaces. No, the color of the decoration does not have to be white – black Accents and decorations are stylish! Consider a bold exterior color you love, but a smart tip: make sure your home’s primary and accent colors share the same undertones to give your home a “well-thought-out” feel.
Andrea’s favorite accent idea right now: Paint the roof of your outdoor porch. It adds unexpected personality and color to the look of your home.
Trending Exterior House Colors For 2021 Are Gorgeous!
Black houses are not going anywhere! If you love the trend but fear it’s too “trendy,” Andrea now believes navy or navy, black, charcoal or dark gray are timeless neutrals.
Just as you use paint to highlight your favorite features of your home, it can also be used to hide elements. Consider painting the exterior
