Benjamin Moore Kendall Charcoal Paint Color – To be honest, the condition of our exterior paint wasn’t great – at least most of the stains were visible. But after living here for nine years, along with our gardening, we got the paint right! Benjamin Moore Amherst Gray Hc 167: Paint Color Review
I honestly don’t know the name and I don’t remember why we chose it, but it’s a bit of a beige color. Like – creamed meat. I knew that when we painted one day, I would want to change it, but despite the humidity and heat, it remained in good condition. Many problems occur under the roof, in the back of the house above, and even damaged trim boards need to be replaced. Here’s a reminder of what it looked like, in a photo I found a few years ago…
In addition to the small areas that needed repainting, our deck and guard rail needed repainting, our fence needed repainting, and our patio needed repainting. We’ve seen neighbors repaint their houses over the past few years – many of them with newer paint than ours – so knowing that also made us feel better about our decision. Once we had a proposal for the company to give us a quote so we could get a firm idea of what we wanted, I asked them to list ALL the projects. In the end, it made sense that they did it all – from start to finish, with a team of four – in two weeks. However, I’m usually hesitant to share too much about contractors/service providers, but I have nothing but wonderful things to say about the company we used. The most important thing for me is to remember that the entire front of our house is made of bricks and stones. We have hardwood floors, but the front is freestanding and the other three sides are freestanding…but they have to match because you can see both sides. The brick is fine, but to be honest, I don’t like the color of our stone. I have no interest in painting it, so my goal is to find a way to do it.

Our house faces south and gets a LOT of sunlight from the front. Warm white might be the “safer” choice, but I wanted to do something different and thought the white siding on the back of the house would be more durable compared to the wood deck tile, porcelain, and some other features. So I started to consider dark colors.
My mom has a dark gray house – and I love the results! Here is the exterior of the Sherwin Williams Roycroft Pewter Charcoal, while it was being built…I LOVE the bold color here.
And here it is, in a shady spot, earlier this year. I love the colors and especially the stage, it’s perfect. But it tends to lean a little towards blue.

Once I was sure I wanted to go for a charcoal/dark gray area, my goal was to find something warm, that wouldn’t clash with the brick and stone of the facade, and didn’t have a blue floor tone. one of the. Without much research (not at all, haha), I found a sample of Benjamin Moore’s Kendall Charcoal. I painted a sample on the east side of the house, near the white trim and brickwork. When I went to paint the swatches on the west side of the house, I also used some Sherwin Williams metal that was left over from our dining room (see Soft and Hot Black Painted Dining Room HERE).
I actually think that steel would be a really cool color – especially if we have exteriors – but for the location and the structure of our house, I think it would be a cool color too. Black would probably be too extreme. I have always loved the color!

On the east side, when our pool was built (so the driveway was very dirty), we still had a pine lawn instead of black mulch, and the lawn was quiet…
Our deck was painted in our favorite color – Sherwin Williams Charwood. Also, our landscaping and plants ran into a bit of a problem this summer trying to get roots in the spring, before we get back to normal. Also, our seed hydrangeas are affected and it looks like they will die a little this season because of the paint 🙁
Yellow Marigold & Kendall Charcoal Front Door
I was able to use Samplize Peel and Stick samples (HERE) to quickly choose a white paint color. We went with our old trusted friend for warm white paint – Sherwin Williams Alabaster. We use it on trim, roofs, garage doors, gutters, patios, fences…anywhere white appears. Even painting the gutters makes a big difference!
On the west side of the house, we have many undesirable things (HVAC, gas, pipes, concrete retaining walls, etc.) – and we may have to consider many solutions to hide other things.
But even painting a dark gray house brings it together! Our painter also painted the piping black, which looks MUCH better. We can’t plant trees here because most of the wires are underground here and Dave backs his truck up here to load/unload from the basement, but I was thinking of trying a fig plant to climb the concrete retaining wall as a way. adding more green (and hiding the walls better). However, painting it the same color as the walls, instead of plain concrete like before, was a HUGE improvement.

TBH, the main reason I wanted to use Benjamin Moore’s Kendall Charcoal was for my backyard pool. Since I was going for a Hamptons/garden style aesthetic, I liked the idea of a dark gray finish on all the features in the yard.
