Benjamin Moore Ultra Spec Primer – It’s finally time to start painting the exterior of the house! I can’t wait to do it as this is a big change for the house. Large windows enclose much of the house and hide the style of this mid-century ranch. As I pulled back, I finally saw the lines I knew were always there. I think you call the color of the house light yellow LOL! We don’t want to keep.
This farmhouse has 3 types of paintable surfaces: wall, brick and metal. Since these materials are so different, I had to make sure I was using the right products. The first call I made was to my contacts at Benjamin Moore Paints. I have used their products for years and they are my favorite for my painting projects. Not only do I love their colors, but the product is of high quality and adds to the longevity of the home. Jane and I decided to paint the main part of the house white and all the trim, edges and bottoms of the windows in true black.
Benjamin Moore Ultra Spec Primer
The brickwork was very important and I wanted to make sure I applied the right material to it. Brick is porous and water can seep through it over time. I had to make sure that what I put on seals the stone so I don’t have any problems in the future. I was told to use Benjamin Moore Ultra Spec Masonry, an acrylic masonry sealant.

The base paint of the wall coating is different. This product is called Benjamin Moore Fresh Start for Outdoor Wood. This protects the wood and ensures that the paint adheres well to it. One of the most important steps in the painting process is the primer. If not done correctly, your finished paint won’t stick and will fade much faster from the hot and cold elements. Living in the Northeast is very important and cannot be ignored.
Now that the primer is finished, it’s time to paint the finished paint at home!
Jane and I wanted the house to be bright white and for that we used Benjamin Moore’s standard white, which is their pure white. Same goes for black, we want true black and that means using their regular black. If you want it for your home, all you have to do is get the right color off the shelf. The color is not mixed and you know you will get a strong, genuine color. Benjamin Moore’s Regal Selection brand should be used for exterior painting. This is their mid-range product and does a good job for outdoor use. For the white, I’m going for a smooth finish and the black is a soft gloss for all the interior.
As soon as the painting was finished, I was in shock! I couldn’t believe it was the same house! All the mid-century details and ceilings just jumped out of the house and came to life. I always tell people to never underestimate the power of color and what it can do to the exterior and interior of a home. This house doesn’t look like the same house and now it really stands out. The look is not finished yet, but it has changed radically. The exterior still needs new windows and doors from Renew Anderson and outdoor lighting from Barn Light Electric. In the spring I will also finish the front view. A major step in the process has been completed and I finished it before winter came.
