Best Exterior Oil Based Stain – As a professional decorator, I love experimenting with exterior paint. Some may find it a bit old-fashioned, but I like to give the wood a new life without changing its character. There are so many brands out there, how do you know which is the best exterior wood stain to use on your property? The thing is, I can’t just point to a product and say it’s perfect. It depends on what you want to do with the stain. Use this blog as a simple and honest guide.
Dulux Ultimate Woodstain has better opacity than any on the list. This product dries faster than other oil-based options. Unfortunately, these pluses come with minuses. Dulux Ultimate does not level well and you can often see brush marks. That’s not to say it’s not a great product, because it is. Dulux Ultimate Woodstain has a time and place to come into its own.
Best Exterior Oil Based Stain
Dulux Ultimate is ideal if you intend to restore and refinish previously painted woodwork that is worn or has some chips. As part of your preparation, you need to kill the bare wood in the wood chips. And because Dulux Ultimate covers it so well, it supports everything and makes it look solid.
How Long Does Deck Stain Need To Dry Before It Rains?
You have to be careful when you leave work to avoid those dreaded brush marks. This is not very good for large panels such as doors.

Sadolin Extra Durable is an easy wood to write over. Beautiful finish but very slow drying!! For bare wood you need to create depth with another product such as Sadolin Classic Wood Board. It’s worth noting that Sadolin has a great reputation for longevity, and although I’ve tested these products side by side and not exposed them to the weather, Sadolin Extra has stood the test of time in my opinion. This is the wood stain I use on the outside of my house.
Do not make the mistake of using this product internally. Without good air flow it takes a long time to dry. We talk for days!! Dry weather is a problem when using the property outside. You can pick up this product at any Crown Decor center or click here for online pricing.
Best Exterior Woodstain To Use On Your Home
A good old reliable wood paint brand, Sikkens is now owned by Dulux owner Akzo Nobel. Sikkens Filter 7 Plus is the outdoor stain you need; However, it has poor coverage, so it is used to restore previously discolored wood or to top coat Sikkens Centol HLS Plus. Therefore, two types of products should be used for bare wood.
While blur can be painful, the Sequence filter is to die for for the overall finish of the 7 Plus. You will notice that it dries slowly, so apply the stain on a warm day. You will achieve a uniform, rich sheen for your wood by properly painting the wood markings. Honestly, the finish is amazing.
Amazingly, this product is available from Dulux Decoration Centers as well as a number of other retailers. I think it is fair to say that they are the market leader in wood stain. Click here to view online pricing.
Every brand I’ve mentioned up to this point comes with a water-based counterpart. These have certain advantages; They dry quickly, clean easily, are good for the environment and are very easy to use. In fact, they fly (looks a little scary until the stain dries).
The Best Oil For Outdoor Furniture
Oil-based water-based stains also have some disadvantages. Adhesion between the new and previous coating can sometimes be poor. Your water-based wood stain can begin to peel after a year, especially if the previous finish was oil-based, or if your finish is not chipped. Even if it sticks, your oil won’t last as long as a petroleum-based one.
That being said, it is still a viable option and can look good. Roncel is probably the best water-based wood stain on the market, but they are all similar.
I didn’t know if Osmo oil was added or not. It is not perfect, but it is very popular for outdoor wood and can look good. It is used on cedar because the soft wood absorbs oil well. There are many limitations. Osmo Oil should not be used on previously sealed wood unless it has been coated with Osmo Oil. Additional coats may need to be applied when transitioning to new wood to aid in longevity. You also have to reapply every two years because it doesn’t last. Use only thin layers, otherwise the product will not work and try to work it into the wood. Click here to view online pricing.
Sorry, I could put a product up front and call it “the best outdoor wood stain”, but like I said, it’s not that easy. I hope this blog has helped you. I still like to use all of the above wood stains for different reasons and they all have their place.
Superdeck® Exterior Oil Based Semi Transparent Stain
One other thing I would like to mention is that the best brush for forest stains, in my opinion, is the Kana Tank. It is a special brush specially designed for stains, lacquers and oils. Worth checking out. Click here to view online pricing.

Deck & Exterior Oil Based Timber Stain, Colours
Whether it’s to add privacy to a garden, emphasize a garden or keep pets out, fences can be the ultimate way to tie a property together. Painting the fence can help protect it from damage, but it’s usually a time-consuming and expensive project. We want to find out which sites are really worth the effort and investment. The more advance research you do, the happier you will be
