Combination Living Room Dining Room – Disclosure: I am very fortunate to partner with many brands to make bedroom renovations possible. All links and brand mentions are included at the bottom of this post and all opinions are my own.

To say that the last six weeks have flown by is not an understatement! I have to start by sincerely thanking Linda at One Room Challenge for trusting me and inviting me to participate. I am very grateful for the opportunity! When I started designing this room, I knew I would be limited because I was renting, so my goal was to add color and design updates and furniture options! A few things that bug me right off the bat: compared to some of the other renovations…this feels very small. At first I didn’t like the room. I didn’t change the windows. I do not smoke wooden floors. And to be honest, I haven’t changed the function of the room either! BUT… I’ve added a LOT of new DETAILS and made a lot of really fun projects for myself and work on them if I don’t like this position.

Thank you for sharing my passion and joy for the past six weeks. It’s hard not to be humbled by this team of outstanding designers, so thanks for the encouragement and kind words! To make this discovery more valuable, let’s remember where we started? When we entered the rental house, the dining room space was an attractive shade of ocher. Low ceiling. Panels that were 75% empty. But hardwood floors and lots of space.

With a fireplace at one end, it was obvious that the dining room would be opposite. The room is large enough that it makes sense to have two separate areas, so the living room dining room is a combination. As much as I love to renovate, I didn’t want to sell every piece of furniture on principle. My green couch was off and, with nowhere to store it, I couldn’t bear to let it go. This is a beautiful rug that I bought years ago at a local rug store.

Let’s talk about what I did. My favorite detail is the mural on the far wall. It brings lots of fun textures and colors. Check out my post on how I was able to hang it on the wall without worrying about my security deposit. I didn’t want to cover the wall with any pretty artwork, so I chose this happy pink “neon” sign. It’s slanted so it doesn’t get too hot and says “Just Try” which is kind of my motto for anything DIY (and food as it turns out. ha!).

I have a new dining room table from Raymour and Flanigan and I love how the wood softens the space and feels more modern than the old blue stained farmhouse table. I found out a week ago that my dining room chairs and sideboard were back ordered, so I had to look for a sideboard on Facebook market and these yellow chairs from Ikea. The seats themselves were always part of my plan!

I shared the tutorial here, but I added chandeliers without the bulb just to define the space on the right a bit more and draw the eye up. You’ll also notice a new distressed pink rug under the table. On my various vision boards, a color looks better under the dining room table (versus black and white) and this pale pink vintage rug from Magnolia Home for Loloi fits the bill!

Minted was one of our sponsors and I was able to collect some of their beautiful photos to hang throughout the space. I’m mad at the wall in the women’s paint gallery (which features the work of Juniper Biggs, Gloria Blatt, and Hailey Mitchell). Under the gallery wall is that bench filled with happy channel. (Full tutorial here.) I used this little faux rose fabric from Spoonflower and it’s the perfect pattern without being too bold.

When we moved in, I put a large gray board between the windows and the stained glass above. Now that I’ve replaced the sideboard with those old brass shelves, I realize how heavy it was. The shelves are perfect for this wall and…gave me a chance to practice making my own shelves.

Looking closely at the shelves, I definitely used some of my stuff from home, but there are a few standout pieces that I have to mention. First up is the hand-painted green bowl by the legendary Jill Rosenwald. When I shared this on my Instagram stories, I heard from dozens of you that owning one of your pieces was a goal… I’m happy and honored that he agreed to work with me on those pieces.

Elsewhere on the shelf… a stunning black head from Lamps Plus. My hope was that this piece would help calm some of the color fantasies in the room. I love a bright and playful space but I didn’t want this room to feel ‘childish’ so little details like this help create that balance in my opinion.

One of the reasons the copper shelves work between the windows is that I decided to add curtains. I decided on this adorable pattern from Brains Are Pretty… I wanted the black and white to complement the color of the room and I love that this fabric has a print but is a neutral pattern. It not only covers the panels that do not work, but also helps to stretch the ceiling a little higher. (Hope). And to add some flavor… this green fringe from Fringe Market is the perfect icing on the cake.

I’ve worked with Hudson Valley and My Mitzi in other areas of this house and love their clean lines. These Renee saws can be wired or wired to perfectly surround copper racks. I have them connected to the remote, but we can upgrade them to the Amazon Alexa socket for voice control.

Walking into the living room, everyone notices the green sofa and colorful rug. I pulled out these colors when I was planning another room. The white coffee table is Jonathan Adler via Facebook marketplace and the size is the same. I have two new Raymour chairs with the same track as my bench. I love that they bring a more modern look with a neutral color. Yes. I said by all means.

Through places I was given up to date. I like having a bench there instead of two *other* chairs. I already put this bench in pink velvet, but then I decided to add contrast with these home accessories. I love that it adds some color to this part of the room, but doesn’t compete with the patterns elsewhere in the space.

I’ve been walking around this room for the past two weeks watching it come together and I don’t know if anything will be found in these photos. I love the fun patterns and colors in the room. I love that the colors compliment the whole house. I love that it feels grown up but still fun. I love that there is no lost sock to be found!

Thank you to the wonderful supporters of the One Room Challenge. They made it possible for us to put these big changes together in six weeks and I really appreciate their generosity!

Now I’m going to make a cup of coffee and enjoy the space my fellow designers have put together. I was amazed at the hard work and change these people got.
