We know that professional artists can have different opinions about painting etc. However, we tend to go for more latex based products because we are a DIY artist’s best friend and these methods are what have worked for us over the years.

Choose the right primer, then we recommend using latex-enamel paint on cabinets. If your cabinets are already painted, you can probably skip the priming step. We talk about how to paint cabinets in our kitchen island repainting post.
Choosing the right paint is probably one of the most important issues. I would also argue that choosing the right primer can be even more important when considering painting any cabinets in your home.
How To Paint Cabinets Like A Pro
I’ve read posts from other people who say you don’t need your first cabinets. I honestly feel like ours have stood the test of time thanks to the primer. Don’t skip this step!!

When painting cabinets in the past, we always used enamel latex paint. I am a big fan of the Sherwin Williams ProClassic line.

However, after using Sherwin’s new urethane enamel paint, I will never use another paint to paint a cabinet.
The only downside is that the cupboards were sticky within a few days. And if we can live with small children and not destroy the cabinets, then so can you.
If you plan to paint your kitchen cabinets while you’re away and like to smell, Kilz Primer, Bin Shellac, or another oil-based primer is a great option.
Best Paints For Kitchen Cabinets
Professional painters say you need oil paint to stop the tannins or natural bleeding in the wood. You should be able to handle the smell and mess even if you use an oil-based primer.
Our favorite primer is Sherwin Williams Multi-Purpose Latex Primer because it’s easy to use.
Since it is watery, you may experience some colored bleeding over time. We stained our oak kitchen cabinets 7 years ago and there is only one stubborn door where you will notice some discoloration. We just added another layer of paint.
Enamel Vs. Lacquer: Which One’s Best For Painting Kitchen Cabinets?
Latex enamel paint gives you the benefits of enamel paint, such as a harder finish, without the harmful environmental issues of oil-based enamel paint.
Latex enamel paint can also be cleaned with soap and water. Latex is a rubber that is mixed with oil paint to create a latex paint hybrid glaze that also dries faster than traditional oil glazes.
We love how our repainted kitchen cabinet island turned out using Sherwin Williams Emerald Urethane Enamel Paint (don’t worry, it’s latex-impregnated for easy cleanup).
How To Paint Your Cabinets Like The Pros With Sherwin Williams Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel
According to the SW website, “It is an interior/exterior water-based urethane modified alkyd with the look and feel of an alkyd/oil finish.” To translate, it is similar to oil paint, but has the advantage of being based on latex.

Sherwin Williams Emerald Paint is expensive (especially if you don’t buy on sale). I also didn’t like the charcoal blue Behr latex gloss we used to paint the bathroom cabinets and railing.
Best Paint For Kitchen Cabinets: How To Choose The Right One
However, for some reason the high touch areas of our railing got a weird texture that we’ve never had anywhere else using Sherwin Williams paint.
So I’ll likely stick with SW latex gloss or Benjamin Moore equivalent. I’m glad I tried the cheaper brand because it was a bit thinner and flowed easier.
Our painted bathroom cabinets are in our kids’ bathrooms and still look great (kids can even give them cabinets as gifts).
What Products We Use🎨
However, our handrail shows some wear and has some spots that look like they’ve come off, such as a vacuum cord that’s been rubbed repeatedly on the edge.
In the near future I’m sure I’ll paint the wood that’s already been painted with a higher latex enamel paint.
Behr’s paint was also thinner than its Sherwin Williams counterparts. The 3rd layer of paint was definitely needed.
How To Paint Oak Cabinets And Hide The Grain
I wouldn’t recommend this paint for a big project, but it’s great for our smaller projects (you can see how we use this charcoal blue).
We’ve seen other DIY bloggers use Deco Satin Paint and/or oil-based glazes. And if you don’t want to paint but still want an easier way to maintain your cabinets, check out our gel painted bathroom cabinets.
Here you can see that we used a sample of clearable paint and wood from Samplize to test the colors of the different islands. The nice thing is that they are great and come in different paint brands like Sherwin Williams. You can read our full review of Samplize here.
How To Chose The Best Kitchen Cabinet Paint?
We always use semi-gloss. For the same reason, you don’t want to use chalk paint, you don’t want to use matte paint, or even eggshell.
However, I was at Sherwin Williams recently and it seems that satin is the most popular choice for cabinets, especially kitchen cabinets.
Many people like to use semi-gloss for cabinetry and satin. However, we have always used semi-gloss latex enamel paint on our kitchen cabinets and bathroom cabinets. And let me say that the cabinets are easy to clean.

You know what??? We completely painted part of our kitchen. Painted backsplash and all lower cabinets are dark. You should see how it is now.
Go to your local paint store (not a big box store) and ask to see samples of different finishes. Although they are small, you will be able to see different colors or different wood finishes.

Best Paint For Bathroom Cabinets
If you have the proper setup and are confident with a paint sprayer (we just bought this one to try), spraying your cabinets can be the best way to get them looking their best. We can see that the disadvantage of overspray is that it can be difficult to control overspray.
If you are installing a station and can spray the doors and drawers, it might be worth considering. I’ve always had great success with a good brush and roller.
A synthetic 2.5-inch English brush is a great option for painting cabinets with latex enamel paint. Some people also like this short-handled brush for painting cabinets.
