I got it all back. I admit it… I’m not always right and I’m always learning. When we painted our Colonial, my perspective on the whole house completely changed. It was so nice to stop in a home we were proud of.

We waited over two years to paint, concentrating on the interior first. I don’t regret it, as we spent countless hours inside those walls, but I always felt compelled to apologize for the outside.

In our St. Louis home, we wanted to try the opposite: paint the exterior before tackling the interior renovation.

When we bought our yellow and brown Tudor, I was blown away. Seeing outside that so much work needed made me instantly nervous every time I entered our house.

Taking care of outdoor issues and painting them in a pristine, neutral color palette sets the tone for our home’s interior, similar to an invitation. It lets guests know what to expect inside and creates a sense of tranquility from the outside in.

Yes, we just repainted this house. We even got the bricks painted and are so glad we finally took the plunge! Here is our current exterior color palette.

Note that we chose Benjamin Moore Swiss Coffee for the body and Benjamin Moore Pale Oak for the finishes.

To make the Tudor a little more timeless and glamorous, we chose base colors and finishes that were slightly different. We followed a similar path the first time we painted, and here are those colors.

For our first exterior paint job, we chose Sherwin Williams Everyday White and Sherwin Williams Realist Beige. At the bottom of this post you can see some pictures of this color combination!

Historically, English Tudor will traditionally have a light and dark contrast with dark wood and paneling or light and neutral colored stucco.

With steeply sloping rooflines, asymmetrical styling, diamond windows, and half-timbered construction as identifying features, Tudor-style homes often feature a mix of brick or stone, along with stucco and wood trim.

Brightening Up A 1930s Tudor Revival

Tudor houses built during the Tudor era in England (commonly considered between 1485 and 1603) were traditionally black and white. In the 1970s, the Tudor style experienced a resurgence in the United States, and often the color scheme was more of a creamy yellow with brown wood.

Exterior paint colors vary significantly with the time of day, depending on how the light hits it. It is important to test samples at different times of the day!

It is often the dated look of very dark wood that can hold back a Tudor home. While these cottage-style homes may exude character, they need a fresh color palette to keep up with modern times. Tantalizing Tudors In Greensboro

The Tudor-style homes you see in the US were popular in the early 20th century up until World War II. According to House Beautiful, the durable materials used for Tudors in colder climates are expensive to build. As a result, the architectural style at the time fell in favor of more practical options.

The modern Tudor style house is based on the original Medieval and Renaissance style houses in England during the 15th and 16th centuries. This period coincided with the reign of the House of British Tudor monarchs, from which the style takes its name. As Bob Vila’s website explains, these original Tudor houses were built using wooden beams, with sticks called acacia between them. The cavities were filled with a mixture of clay, sand and manure. Then they painted it white with lime. This construction technique is known as half-timbering and gives the Tudor house its distinctive and familiar design.

Charming House Exteriors We’d Love To Come Home To

Aside from the half-timbered plaza that distinguishes Tudor-style homes, there aren’t usually many other wood exterior accents. Instead of the traditional use of brick or stone, this exterior design uses modern wood siding to create texture and contrast.

Our designers have reduced the contrast on the exterior of this large Tudor house by painting the bricks the same color as the stucco. Benjamin Moore’s Seapearl achieves modern appeal. Now the only contrast is the half timber constructions, the beautiful copper curtains and the unique structure itself.

This two-story traditional brick house had a Tudor accent on the second floor. To update the exterior of the house, our designers used wide plank siding painted with graphite by Benjamin Moore. Removing the half-timbered frame and replacing it with color-blocked panels gives it a modern update.

Most Tudors you are likely to see in your neighborhood are creamy white. This color is reminiscent of the lime used in the original medieval and renaissance houses. This Tudor has been given a modern makeover by our designers with Sherwin Williams’ deep Iron Ore on the stucco and Benjamin Moore’s Revere Pewter on the half beams.

Copper accents were not commonly used in homes during the Renaissance. This is why copper is not seen in traditional Tudor houses. However, using copper accents is a great way to add a modern touch to this home style, like the one above, while still feeling timeless. Painting this house in Iron Mountain and Revere Pewter, both by Benjamin Moore, also refreshes the look.

Some smaller modern Tudor style houses lack the iconic half beams. Instead, they have a prominent fireplace at the front and an arched doorway. Our designers updated the exterior of this home with a fresh paint color, black windows, and copper eaves to bring out the fireplace and porch.

How To Choose The Best Exterior Paint Colors For Your Home To Add Enhancement, Resale Value And Curb Appeal

If you are wondering how to update the exterior of a Tudor style house in a monochromatic way, here is a good example. The half beams are painted the same color as the stucco. In this case, we used Benjamin Moore’s Cloud Cover. The trim and windows are Jet Black (also by Benjamin Moore) for a subtle contrast that doesn’t overwhelm the design.
