Furniture Arrangement For Small Living Rooms
I have seen this many times in the homes of my design clients – they are buying or building a new open concept home…. And then you realize that the living room area is really very small!
How To Arrange Furniture In A Long Narrow Living Room
In an open concept living room, there is little wall space and a lot of passageways, so the space for furniture can be very small in the case of open floor plans.
For a small open concept living room, it is important to separate the living room from the dining room. Make sure there is enough space on the dining table and chairs to move around and remove the chairs.
If any of the above situations apply to you, you need small furniture arrangement ideas to create a beautiful living room that matches the layout of the room!
To achieve the perfect arrangement in a small room, the first step is to rearrange the furniture and decor elements!
Ideas For Adding A Little Extra Seating To Your Small Living Room
Get rid of all the furniture and items on the living room floor that you don’t use every day, don’t meet your needs, have different styles that clash with each other, or don’t match your style.
For example, if you need more storage, get rid of end tables without shelves or drawers.
Move the inherited but not really loved armchair to another room – or sell it and let someone else enjoy it!
Also take rocking chairs or wheelchairs out of the small living room, as they take up a lot of space! They should sit away from the wall and other furniture to avoid slipping/overflowing.

My design clients often come to me with living rooms that look like a furniture store – lots of pieces!
Here is a nice little living room with just the right amount of furniture. This room is also nicely renovated and full of furniture. There is a sofa, an ottoman, a coffee table and chairs – that’s it!
My design clients often ask me to design a small room that can accommodate 4-10 extra people for a barbecue or Christmas gathering.
They want a sofa and chair in the living room that is big enough to accommodate the extra person who comes to visit from time to time.
Living Room Layout Ideas That Are Timeless
The truth is that your living room should be designed to meet your daily needs and daily use! Sometimes it’s not because of how you use it. You don’t have company every day.
If you need extra chairs for occasional gatherings, buy stackable chairs and store them in another room. Take them out when you need them!
Also pay attention to where the glass doors, stairs and passageways are located – they should not be covered by furniture.
You will need these measurements when buying new furniture and evaluating existing furniture.
