Furniture Arrangement Ideas For Long Living Rooms – I’m back with another game guide, Save Our Space. My plan in this series is to take the reader’s shoes and offer design tips and tricks on how to make it better (practically).

I have to say that 90% of the messages I get from readers are about living room decor. It can be difficult to figure out how to maximize space in this frequently used space. Where do you put the television? How many chairs do you need? Today’s design dilemma comes from Hannah, who struggles with this very problem. He has a long narrow room and needs new furniture for the room. But what to get and where to put everything? Let’s see your post…

Furniture Arrangement Ideas For Long Living Rooms

I have the perfect family room and I don’t know how I want to arrange the furniture or what to put on my giant, blank walls. This space was more about function than form for us, but now we’re ready to buy new furniture and make the most of this space.

The real challenge I have is finding wall art that isn’t mass produced and tacky, but is also great for large walls. Another trick is to have some sort of functional storage space for internet and TV electronics to the right of the fireplace.

I looked at this room for a long time and dreamed of different arrangements for the sofa and chairs in the room. In the end, I came up with two different options for Hannah and her family, depending on where they wanted to place the TV. (I use a free program from to do this because I know someone will ask.)

I know people have strong opinions about TV placement (just look at the strong feelings in our bedroom), so I wanted to give Hannah two different options. Before moving on to decorating the living room, there are a few things I would do regardless of which option I choose.

Let’s start with the television above the fireplace. Obviously, I’m a big fan of Frame TVs (we have several in our house) and I love that this TV looks like art above the stove. Oh yes! The family may want to watch TV from the kitchen, so I’ve found that leaving it above the fireplace has its advantages.

The way to pre-install the room, the section in the middle of the room, the space for the kitchen and the rest of the house was closed. I think it’s in order with a twist, especially so that Hannah and her family don’t end up staring at the bottom of the sofa.

Here is my friend and former blogger friend Bridget’s living room decor. You can visit his whole house here. It also has a long and narrow living room, and it went for two sofas facing each other with a TV above the fireplace.

And as for the couches, go with two different ones! I always liked the leather sofa and then the fabric one. I think they look best with different foot profiles – one with a higher foot and one closer to the ground.

Ideally, you want to leave about 16-18″ between the couches and the coffee table, so Hannah should go with a smaller coffee table of 29″ or less. I really like the look of this oval shape and it’s 26 inches wide. I also like that Bridget has an extra chair in the back of the room to take up some of that space. Anna could certainly do something similar with a fake Eames chair.

Hanna is also responsible for hiding the TV cables and wires. I found this tutorial that shows how to add an AV back box to the back of the actual TV to accommodate these components. It might be a good idea to keep the TV frame flat against the wall to keep things neat and tidy.

Ok, here is my second narrow living room layout idea. We move the TV above the console on the right side wall (where we store the TV components). In front of it we placed a sofa, a coffee table and two comfortable chairs. For seating, I like to use swivel chairs in this situation so you can watch TV or turn around to see the play area or kitchen. This navy blue velvet armchair is so cute!

In our living room, our TV sits on top of a long console and there are some great toys for the kids. Hanna had placed a long piece along the wall and hung a framed TV.

When you move the TV, you can go for the decoration above the fireplace. This blog post will show you my top tips for decorating a mantel. I love the idea of a large mirror (like our old apartment) or the clock and frames my mom had in her bedroom.

Large Living Room Ideas That Make Great Use Of Space

After Hanna decided on the design, she wanted to add some storage on the wall to the left as you enter the room. She said her daughter likes to play in the area and they wanted a place to store some toys. I would go for this vault in front of the windows. Upstairs could be decorated with a table lamp and perhaps a large mirror to diffuse the light from the window.

With two placement options, there’s still room to play between the dining room and sofa, so easy access to toys would be perfect for the whole family.

Now for Hannah’s last question. “What should I put on the walls?” Here are some ideas…

My brother has a large piece of art in his apartment and his wife’s in her living room. It fits well in the room and takes up 2/3 of the space above the couch. They bought it in Horchow, where you can find many good things.

Hannah could also provide abstract art, as I did in Ellis’s kindergarten. I have no artistic talent and it wasn’t too bad so I think it can be done! You can repurpose canvas by finding generic (and generic) art at HomeGoods or Target.

Juniper Print Shop also sells large prints that you can frame yourself. Read my blog on how to choose the right scale art before you buy.

A photo border is also a fun idea if you want to display different frames and have the ability to switch things around seamlessly. Here’s a guide on how to build it.

The classic video game Tetris easily comes to mind when faced with the overwhelming task of building a furniture design in a tight space. A sofa may look perfect against a particular wall, but once a coffee table is placed in front of it, it can suddenly feel cramped: a side chair is needed for guests, but its small size feels larger between the floor and the stool So what can you do to beat this realistic version of Tetris and create a lot of empty space?
