For those of you waiting for an ALWAYS UNBREAKABLE perfect neutral gray, I hate to see your color fall off, but gray has shades. And not just gray paint colors, but also gray SURFACES. That gray tile that looks pretty neutral? Yes Your sectional sofa that is the most perfect dark charcoal? You’re betting your booty, aren’t you. Even your new gray quartz countertop with white veins has nuances. Once you know the nuances of your interior finishes, it will be easier to choose the best paint color to match them (if your room is empty, focus more on the exposure of your room).
The Best Gray Paints For Your Space
In terms of shades you can expect, warm grays will have purple or green undertones, while cool grays influence BLUE, purple or green (often a combination).
Although the gray areas on the wood wall above look “gray”, they have a distinct purple undertone, making Benjamin Moore Trout Gray an excellent choice.
Now, if you’ve been reading on the darker end of things, you may have come across my blog post on Sherwin Williams’ Best Taupe Colors as well as Benjamin Moore’s Best Taupe and Taupe Colors. Greige and taupes are hard to get right because the undertones tend to pop more than you want, leaving you with more than just “neutral looking” walls. As for the gray color, the same. While it’s easier to go for a somewhat neutral look on the lighter end of things, when it gets darker, those undertones can come back with a vengeance.
Best Warm Gray Paint Colors
But whatever the tone, compared to Sherwin Williams’ selection, Benjamin Moore packs a serious punch, so let’s get down to business.
By the way, you will see that ALL of these colors have an LRV below 30. Not sure what an LRV is? It could save PAINT LOVIN’ LIFE – read all about it HERE.
Chelsea Gray has an LRV of 22, making it a popular choice for cabinets, exteriors and even entire walls in a room. With this moderate LRV, it’s just the right depth to add drama and style to the room without overwhelming it.
Top 10 Benjamin Moore Mid Tone Neutrals (warm To Cool)
In the dining room above, you can see how fresh Chelsea Gray looks with white trim. Get a similar look with Benjamin Moore Chantilly Lace with Chelsea Grey.
And although sometimes you can’t see it at all, Chelsea Gray has a green tint. It’s also classified as a warm gray, but you won’t see it as TRADITIONALLY warm as Metropolis (coming soon).
In this kitchen (below), Chelsea Gray looks simple and low-contrast with black laminate worktops allowing the white tiles and base cabinets to contrast…
Choosing The Perfect Gray Paint Color
In the opposite direction to Chelsea Gray (shade-wise) is Steel Wool. While Chelsea Gray has a green undertone and a slight hint of warmth, Steel Wool is a COOL gray paint color with a purple-blue undertone.
The great thing about steel wool is its flexibility, nodding to both blue and purple finishes without committing 100% to one of them. And it does all this while still looking more or less “grey” as the next picture shows…
The trim color pictured above is Benjamin Moore Cloud White, a white with a touch of warmth that offsets the cool approach of steel wool.
Benjamin Moore 2019 Color Of The Year
Benjamin Moore Graystone has an LRV of nearly 30, making it one of the BEST options on this page. For this particular kind of warm gray, I’d like to show you something a little darker, but if we go down just ONE RACK to Squirrel Tail, we have a green that’s more distracting than a stripe on a football. game (it wasn’t me I swear).
But compared to the slightly warmer greige end of things, Graystone holds up amazingly well in terms of tones. While it definitely gives the green light, it’s more of a polite nod than a “come here.” Pictured above is a Greystone with White Dove upholstery and Cheating Heart doors.
See how much more GREEN comes to the party in this additional foyer with warm white trim and a BEAUTIFUL wooden door. Remember that EXPOSURE, indoor lighting, and surrounding finishes in your space play a HUGE role in how color is perceived.

Seriously, I could go on and on about Gray…I WANT! Gray is not just GRAY, it is one
Dark charcoal with a fairly strong purple-blue hue. I can’t even tell you how many times I refer this color to my Online Color Consulting clients.
With an LRV of ALMOST 10, it is definitely one of the darkest options, at least before things start looking black, after which ALL is clear. In the photo above, you can notice how the semi-gloss sheen of the paint reflects off the light, making the gray look LIGHTER than you would expect.
Gray Paint Color Guide 2022
In this next photo, while the wood molding is in desperate need of being painted the same color as the fireplace, let’s focus on how the Gray picks up the darker stone from the mantelpiece…
By the way, if you go to a paint store, order Gray 2121-10 including the number. Why? Because if you just ask about GRIS, the official will say “
“and you will be on an endless merry-go-round of suffering trying to figure out WHICH gray you mean.

You’ll no doubt be heading out to pick up swatches in the near future. I want you to check SAMPLIZE. Samplize offers peel and stick paint samples that are more affordable, easier and more environmentally friendly than traditional paint cans. Here are just a few reasons why I recommend Samplize to my clients…
Metropolis is undoubtedly one of the best warm grays on the market. Some warm grays lean so far that they are mistaken for taupe, others are so subtle that they don’t always have enough warmth. Metropolis falls right in the middle and is a good choice, especially for some granite countertops from the early 2000s.
Metropolis has a violet undertone and is not shy, but not overly imaginative either.
Our Favorite Grey Paint Colors
Amherst Gray is a VERY popular dark gray color, second only to Chelsea Grey. With LRV 17, Amherst Gray has a little more meat on the bones without being as dark as the (also beautiful) Kendall Charcoal.
But remember there are ALWAYS sneaky undertones and Amherst Gray comes in HOT with a green undertone that can pop up strongly depending on your surroundings…
I love Trout Gray because it’s colorful enough to be interesting without being overwhelming in its approach. In terms of shades, Trout Gray leans well to blue; a blue that leans HARD into purple, as shown by this dressing table with personality.
Benjamin Moore Paint Colors: Top 10 Designer Favorites
Trout Gray has an LRV of nearly 15, making it a great choice for walls, built-ins, wardrobes or ENTIRE ROOMS!
While the options above are the MOST POPULAR dark grays, this next section is about the MORE NEUTRAL dark grays. Why are they not listed above? Well, they’re rarely used, and that’s because most interior finishes MUST have gray paint colors with noticeable undertones. That doesn’t mean these options aren’t beautiful,
I also don’t have full reviews of these colors OR pictures to show you, simply because I don’t link to them very often, which means these are SUPER short summaries…
The Best Warm Whites For Your Home! My Top 8 Favorites For A Neutral Look
The asphalt has an LRV of 19.71 and a VERY light purple shade. This makes it an interesting option for decks, masonry or masonry exteriors that require a more passive approach. It’s also an interesting wardrobe color when very little nuance is needed.
With an LRV of 13.47, Overcoat takes a similar approach to Asphalt with a slightly stronger purple tone and a bit more MEAT on the bones. The coat would also be a beautiful choice outdoors for front doors and dramatic walls.
Dolphin has an LRV of 22.52, which is the lightest of the final three. It also has a slight undertone, maybe a slight hint of green. The risk with this color is that if your finishes have a purple undertone, Dolphin can look flat or even a bit green in comparison. Not sure if this is possible? Take a sample of Benjamin Moore Metropolis and place it next to the dolphin and watch the magic unfold before your eyes. Okay, maybe so
