Today I want to share with you my honest review of this product and the process I went through to paint my accent cabinet.

Rust Oleum Chalked 12 Oz. Ultra Matte Spray Paint, Clear
Ok – for starters – COVID hit and I was stuck in my house and couldn’t go to the hardware store/home decor store. This means that taking on any great room renovation projects is out of the question.
So instead, I forced myself to look around my house and pick up simple DIY things that had been on my mind for a while… including fixing up a beautiful cabinet we had.
Luckily for me, this DIY project has been on my to-do list for a while and I already had the resources to complete it, … I just needed time to prioritize this project, that’s all.
Rustoleum Chalked Paint
I had gotten a few cans of Rust-Oleum chalk spray paint in a charcoal color and they were sitting in our garage closet to use.

I bought this cute accent cabinet from Home Sense 2 homes and the good news is I still love it! It’s small with lots of storage and because of the neutral colors it matches my design style with all 3 of our homes.

Plus, it’s only as versatile as what can go into it. Hitherto it was in our front hall for hats and towels, &c. Then to our mill room where we used it as a command center and stored receipts, mail, keys, etc. Now it sits in our living room and holds some craft supplies for the kids, including paper, pencils, crayons, markers, etc.
However, over the years the white has turned yellow and I really started to notice it after painting our house crisp white and light grey!
So… that’s why this cool accent cabinet is getting a quick makeover with a pint of Rust-Oleum chalk spray paint!

If you hit the spray paint aisle of the hardware store, there are tons of finish and color options! Rust-Oleum is one of the best brands of spray paint and therefore a great choice anywhere!
Chalk paint gives a matte look when applied to home decor or furniture. It’s the perfect choice to add farmhouse charm or even if you want a smooth finished look!
I put this DIY off for so long and it ended up being a simple renovation that anyone can do!

The hardest part of all was emptying the contents of the cabinet. Only really because it means I have to go through everything and organize everything 😉
So… interesting update. As much as I loved the ease, color and finish of the accent cabinet at the end of this DIY, when I put the accent cabinet back in the room, it just didn’t look “right”.
So… I ended up re-spraying it with Rust-Oleum Chalk Paint. But this time with a white cloth. It took 3 cans to cover the cabinet this round, but that’s because I covered such a dark color. I am still extremely happy with the overall quality and ease of the product!

In conclusion, I would highly recommend this product to anyone looking to do a quick update/update or refresh a piece of furniture or even some home decor!

It’s no secret that I’ve been a huge fan of Annie Sloan Chalk Paint for many years. I have used it in over 100 projects, from large furniture to small decorations. I spied this piece on a local thrift store’s Facebook page and thought it might be interesting, and then of course I forgot all about it! A few days later, I was walking through that store looking for a project for Fixer Uppers Furniture Day (today) and I remembered this awesome cabinet. Marked down to $40 and then 50% off = only $20!
It is strong and sturdy and has 2 drawers (a top drawer and then a second deeper drawer) – and this swivel was added by the previous owner. I think they want to put a TV on it and shake it in different directions…?
Rust Oleum Clear Chalk Board Spray

First, the dishwasher had to go. It was a clever addition, but it’s unlikely the new owners would want to keep it anyway. A bolt, nut and washer held it in place.
Then, I removed the device from the drawers. I was planning on replacing the pull but kept the bolts to use.

I then cracked on the back side of the holes and filled all the unnecessary holes with wood filler and let it dry. After a while he peeled it so that it was smooth.
I was planning to use the extra copper cups from this project earlier this year. So I measured new spots on the drawers in the center of the pull (measure twice, drill once)…
And then drill the six new holes with my handy drill/driver combination. I believe this is oak which is quite a hard wood and then my arms felt it!

At first I decided to try Rustoleum Chalked Paint because I really wanted to paint the cabinet bright green. Annie Sloan Chalk Paint doesn’t come in a light green and I don’t like mixing colors. Also, I needed the paint fast and wanted to buy a can and use it the same day. When I saw that the Sensible Sage color was Rustoleum Chalked, I was excited!
Chalk paint doesn’t require much preparation, but you should lightly prime glossy surfaces before painting. This is almost the same guide as Annie Sloan Chalk Paint. However, as an experienced painter, I know that there are certain types of furniture that always require additional preparation. Learn how to properly prepare furniture for painting here. Since I wasn’t worried about bleeding this cabinet, I went straight to my Purdy brush and got busy.
(I taped the new drawer holes so the paint wouldn’t bleed through and make a mess.)
Buy Rust Oleum Chalked Ultra Matte Spray Paint 12 Oz., Aged Gray
Coverage was pretty good. I did two full coats and then again some smaller areas as needed. The paint is thicker than latex but doesn’t feel as thick as ASCP.
After the paint dried, I sanded it smooth and sanded it with 320 grit sandpaper. I was happy with how well it was distressed (I usually like a slightly faded look, not too distressed).
I didn’t buy the Rustoleum Chalked top coat – I plan to use Annie Sloan clear wax. I’ve had so many bad experiences with topcoats turning yellow when they shouldn’t, that I stick with furniture wax just to be safe.
Chalked Ultra Matte Paint
I have been wanting to try a light green for ages! However, this is not the color I had in mind. It was hard to tell the right color in a small inch swatch in the brochure in the store. This is Sensible Sage and leans more towards the duck egg chalk paint color I’m used to. And I didn’t want it to be so pale…but it’s definitely a nice color.
I’m glad I used the leftover copper from this last project. They are beautiful in this color! Here are the exact pulls I used if you are thinking of trying them.
Opinion: Overall, I was quite pleased with Rustoleum Chalked Paint. I will always love Annie Sloan Chalk Paint because it is the original (and in my opinion the best), but I can definitely see myself trying another color of Rustoleum Chalked. It’s also great if you’re on a lower budget or don’t have a local ASCP dealer to shop from. If you’ve tried it before, I’d love to know yours
