Hello friends! Thank you for the overwhelming love of our backyard makeover. The response has been great and we have really enjoyed our new place…well we were in our area before this wicked and very unseasonable heat wave and the temperature was over 106 for a few weeks. Needless to say, I can’t wait for it to be over so we can spend more time outside again. As hot as it has been lately, we actually felt the heat before the exterior was even finished, during one of the biggest projects of the entire renovation: repainting the deck. Luckily I was able to finish it before the real scavengers got here. Today I am sharing the process of how I approached this project.

The biggest goal I wanted for our outdoor space was to make it feel like an extension of our home. I really wanted to blur the lines between indoors and outdoors and knew that the deck’s color scheme would go a long way toward that end result. As beautiful as the natural redwood was, I really didn’t want it to look or feel like a standard wood deck. I love the warmth of the color of our hardwood floors inside our home and was hoping to replicate it outside.

Wood Stain Color Options

Because we used redwood, we had to wait several months after construction before we could stain or apply a protective coat. This allows the wood and oil to dry properly, allowing it to pick up stains better and give an excellent color payoff. Construction was completed in February and we let it dry for 5 months before installing it in July. If you’re working with a wood like pine or Douglas fir, you won’t have to wait long for the stain. Once I had a game plan on how to approach the project, I ordered Sharon Williams to pick up the stake and materials from the curb.

I used a brush, a roller, a metal bowl, a spray pump, and Sharon Williams Super Deck Cleaner and Stain to complete the project.

As with any painting project, great results start with a clean and well-prepared surface. I started cleaning and sweeping everything from the deck. Then I gave it a good scrub. I used SuperDeck Revive Deck and Siding Brightener to clean and wash the deck. This formula is specifically designed for use on new or uncoated cedar, redwood or pressure-treated wood.

Sherwin Williams Super Deck Water Based Stain Reviews: Is It Any Good?

I had some help with this part of the project because you have to be careful not to let the product dry out when applying the product to the wood. Working in small sections, Naomi and I watered the area and applied Super Deck Revive with a pump sprayer.

After applying, she scrubbed the area with a polybrush. Then we leave it for about 10 minutes and rinse it with a high pressure hose.

Once we got a groove going it went really fast. After cleaning the entire deck, we let it dry overnight. The next morning the wood looked fresh and renewed…like it was brand new again!

After the deck was ready to be washed and stained, I made another pass along the house with broom and tape where the deck meets it to protect the exterior paint.

Now it was time to paint. I chose Superdeck Exterior Waterborne Formula in Semi-Solid Color Stain. When choosing a cover, you should consider maintenance and how often you may need to reapply it. A good rule of thumb is that the darker or more opaque the transparency, the lower the maintenance. Clear coat and semi-transparent stains will require maintenance and more frequent reapplication, while semi-solid or solid stains can last longer before needing reapplication. Super Deck is great because you can even apply it to damp wood.

SuperDeck glaze comes in many color options and I chose the Chestnut SW 3524 color. I wanted a deep rich brown and this color was perfect when I tested the color swatches a few months ago. To be precise, I redid a small area.

Now listen guys… your girl was scared while doing that first brush stroke. How scary. We saved a long time building the deck and the last thing I wanted to do was destroy it. It was a project that really challenged me to trust my vision and process. I started by rolling the stain with a short nap roller and then used a 6 inch deck brush to gently brush over it to smooth it out. Always apply in the direction of the grain.

There was a bit of a learning curve working with the stain as it was unlike any other stain I had used before. You apply it like paint and after leaving it on the wood for a few minutes you just roll/brush it on without removing the paint. It took me a while to get the hang of it, but once I did it went smoothly. I was also working against the heat, so I had to move very quickly. After the first day I realized that I would rather just stain with a brush, so I pulled out some of my other workhorse brushes (Purdy’s are my favorite!) and used them for the duration of the project.

Please save me from myself the next time I get this crazy idea of dying a deck again! If I tell you, it took forever!!! I had no idea how big the deck was until I had to paint it. by hand. Board by board. It is huge and took longer than I expected due to its size. Also, I could only work on it in the early morning and later in the evening when it was below 90 degrees outside. I would recommend starting a deck painting project in the fall or spring when the weather is not too hot or too cold. Just make sure there’s no rain in the forecast. And don’t even get me started on the cleaning between each one. Ankle board

It took a few days but I finally got the first coat of paint done. I really wanted to take my time to create a beautiful, self-contained result. I could slowly see the vision coming together.

The nice thing about Super Deck Glaze in a water-based formula is that it allows for faster drying and recoating times. You can only apply more coats after 4 hours and with a semi-solid finish you should apply two thin coats for best results. Depending on the size of your project, you can complete it in just one day with this product! After finishing the second layer I let it dry overnight before putting it back on the deck.

After about 48 hours I did a water test to see how well the stain held up to moisture and it was amazing to see that the water beads up immediately.

I think a lot of people were surprised when I mentioned that I would stain the deck because we use redwood for construction and people usually leave redwood decks in their natural state. It is an excellent quality wood with all kinds of rot and nature/element resistance properties. If left untreated or colorless, it will turn a warm gray over time. Sure it was pretty, but I knew I was going to paint it when we first made it. I am very happy with the end result. It looks beautiful and really makes the place feel like a resort vacation destination.

If you are considering a deck staining project, I definitely recommend Sharon Williams Super Deck products. They also come in an oil-based formula, which I’ll probably try next time I stain the deck. I’m one of those weird people who likes to work with oil-based products because I like that it gives you a little more control over my application. It dries slower than water-based stains (which can be a downside for many), but it also gives you a little more leeway if you take your time and really want to get the application right. does.
