The exterior of the Sherwin-Williams Duration was marketed on the basis of significant improvements and exceeded all requirements in every respect. However, some painters consider its thickness and faster drying time to be disadvantages of application. Painters need to be faster and more accurate on the first iteration of duration. For some people, using this product in direct sunlight or in temperatures over 90 degrees is difficult.
Many painters are currently working on “duration” because it is “difficult to use”. However, in our experience, these claims often come from painters who don’t understand what duration is and how to apply it correctly.

Starting in 2020, Sherwin-Williams has changed the duration to make the brush easier to use and better suited for detail painting like windows, doors, and knick-knacks.
We have been using Duration since it was introduced and think it is one of the best exterior decorative paints. But durability isn’t always the best option for dark colors or larger surfaces.
The paint contains a high amount of surfactants, which contributes to its ease of application, as it retains thicker coverage values. While these additives facilitate easy brushing, high concentrations of paint additives bring other application limitations.

Surfactant leaching can occur when a newly painted surface is exposed to moisture, moisture, or cold before the additives in the coating are dispersed (also called cured).
While surfactant leaching won’t damage the paint itself, it can leave unsightly white streaks or circles that look like watermarks.
Durability is more durable, but if rain or moisture is in the forecast, the SW Latitude is more versatile. Whether it’s rain, humidity or soil moisture, all exterior paints are exposed to the elements, conditions that can be difficult to predict or schedule.
Exterior Color Inspiration
Exterior duration may be an issue when it comes time to clean the brush, but it adheres to the surface better than any other SW acrylic exterior latex paint.
The cost of a painting contractor’s time is usually a bit higher when you factor in the extra time and tool wear. But if a homeowner is looking for a paint that’s long-lasting, the extra cost in terms of duration is worth it. If we use Duration paint, we extend the warranty.
The duration also covers hairline cracks better than other comparisons. When two coats of Duration exterior paint are applied, the wood shows little visible cracking and splitting.
Comparing Benjamin Moore & Sherwin Williams Exterior Paints: Which Is Right For You?
Light fading is a problem with exterior paints in all product lines from all manufacturers. Color retention is also comparable to other high quality SW exterior paints. But dark colors will eventually fade when exposed to UV rays.
Considering the thickness of the “duration”, at first glance the painter usually thinks that it has an increased solid content. But surprisingly, solids are comparable to thinner paint products. Duration ranges from 39-44% solids, depending on base and gloss, while other SW products have elastomeric coatings that last 41-50% or higher.
But don’t just let the numbers fool you. While the lower solids percentage may seem like a drawback, the duration makes up for the lack of solids by increasing total surface solids with thicker applications.
How Much Does Sherwin Williams Paint Cost? [by Paint Type]
Due to its thickness, it also covers a smaller area, between 200-300 sq. ft./gallon. In our experience, these numbers drop by 30% on heavily textured surfaces.
The thickness for wet sanding applications is 5-7 mils which is excellent. But the dry thickness of 2.1-2.7 mil is less impressive. Therefore, we recommend applying two coats of paint for maximum durability.
While the new duration formula provides better brushability and open time, it can still leave brush marks and paint smudges when rolling or brushing in high temperatures, which is to be expected.

Some of the qualities we’ve grown to appreciate in Sherwin-Williams exterior paint over the years still stand out. Premium vinyl safety exterior paint.
Duration is considered a safe vinyl paint, but we do not recommend using any paint to paint dark-colored vinyl. Newer formulas greatly increase the versatility in terms of duration, but we still recommend SW Super Paint for vinyl painting applications.

Durability Even when painted at low temperatures, it is finger-dry within an hour. For painters across the United States and elsewhere, the effort to make paint application easier and more versatile is a huge advantage when using Sherwin-Williams exterior paint.
Better adhesion duration does not mean that it is possible to paint on raw wood. When applying acrylic latex paint to an unpainted substrate, a primer is required both indoors and outdoors.
Self-priming refers to the paint’s ability to coat and adhere to a pre-painted surface. Zinsser primer is one of the best options for bonding exterior paint to raw wood.

Since brick and concrete are porous surfaces that absorb water easily, whatever coating is used must allow moisture to pass through and disperse.
The duration allows moisture transfer, but at a slower rate. Therefore, it is generally not recommended for painting brick homes, although it can be used on highly textured brick surfaces. However, using Duration on smooth-surfaced brick can cause the paint to peel.
I have previously recommended against using Durata when painting doors, shutters and other trim. Due to the thickness of the paint, it leaves a heavy brushstroke, but with the new formula, it’s better than ever.

However, with darker shades, we still recommend not using it unless the area is exposed to the elements or is painted indoors and stored for a few days while the paint cures.
