Sherwin Williams Epoxy Floor Coatings – Sherwin-Williams, the world’s leading paint and coating manufacturer, has announced that its pioneering Resuflor™ epoxy coating system has been successfully applied to a hangar at Teesside International Airport, a Royal Air Force (RAF) Red Interim site. Air Attack Training Service (IRAATS). The Resuflor™ Topcoat System was used to provide a reliable and durable floor surface to L-159E aircraft used for combat training.
The suspension used by IRAATS has a floor covering that can withstand the rigors of the activities carried out there and was the responsibility of Darlington-based specialist flooring contractor, MJF Group. The company’s managing director, Martin Ferguson, said: “As you would expect from a project involving the RAF, only the best products can be used to deliver the required levels of health and safety. We evaluated many products from different flooring manufacturers and found that Sherwin-Williams’ Resuflor™ coating system gives Skidrol the protection and strength it needs.”

Skidrol is a phosphate ester hydraulic fluid widely used in aircraft. It is flame resistant and maintains a low viscosity at very low temperatures at altitudes of 10,000 m or more, which is important in aviation and aerospace applications. Although highly effective, Skidrol is also extremely corrosive and can easily damage a concrete floor if not properly protected.

“Industrial epoxy resin floors are impact resistant, fast curing and withstand temperature changes well,” explains Jay Livingston, director of business development for Sherwin-Williams. “In the aerospace industry, the floor must also withstand Skidrol’s corrosive capabilities. Although there are several Skidrol-resistant products on the market, Resuflor™ is the only one directly available on the market. While other manufacturers have to modify existing products using expensive add-ons (comparably priced), Sherwin-Williams offers an easy, cost-effective, labor-intensive solution that looks good.
The MJF Team sandblasted the existing concrete floor and then used a diamond grinding process to correct irregularities such as small dents and nicks. One coat of Resuprime NVT was used, followed by two coats of gray Resuflor™ HB – one 300 micron and one 250 micron – on selected areas of the floor with quartz. In terms of maintenance, Sherwin-Williams has provided specialized oil and tire removers as well as general cleaning solutions to break up and remove deposits, maintain the aesthetic quality of the floor and maximize its lifespan.
