White walls are all the rage right now, and for good reason. They create a neutral bright and versatile background for your space. They reflect natural light into the space and create a warm and pleasant feeling. But let’s be honest, choosing the perfect white color for your space can definitely be difficult. If you’re struggling to choose white for your home, we have some professional, tried-and-true tips to make your decision easier!

The Best Sherwin Williams Whites: Undertones Explained

Our biggest tips when it comes to using white in your home is to stick to the same color on the walls, ceiling and trim. For the trim and roof, we want to reduce it by 50% (this creates a softer and lighter version of the original shade while staying true to the same color and undertones). If you use more than one white color in a space, you risk painting with different colors and undertones that can seriously change the appearance of some white colors against each other (this also applies to other colors, but can be especially noticeable among white colors). By painting everything the same white, you ensure that all the colors and undertones are the same, so your white stays true and faithful without changing the look. Remember, if you want a bit of contrast in decorations or elements, consider lightening the same white color to 75% or 50%. We will also lighten it in the same percentage as the cladding on the roof.

We hope our guide to choosing the right white color will help you make your decision! Always, always remember to sample. You may not want to spend money, but a sample can save you from a costly repainting mistake in the long run. Test your samples against your trim/cabinet color and your floors in different rooms of the house at different times of the day. All of these can change the appearance of white, so be sure to consider all factors. In our opinion, you can never have too many patterns! If you’re considering multiple whites, paint them all next to each other in different places in the room (plus trim!).

Whatever you do, don’t rely on photos of certain colors you see online. All colors look different on computer screens and are treated differently. It won’t look the same in your home, so keep that in mind and use patterns instead.

When choosing a sheen for your white paint, we often recommend a flat finish or an eggshell finish for standard satin bathroom walls (not bathroom). Our priority for ceilings is flat color. We often use satin in carpentry and joinery. Semi-gloss is also popular for use in machining.

Happy white hunting! Take a deep breath…pick your favorites, sample, test everywhere and be confident in your decision. You understand!!

When you first start looking for white, any white looks…well…white. Unless you have her next to other blondes. Then the white color starts to take on different colors.

It’s because of the undertones. Some whites are cool with blue/green tones, some are warm with yellow/orange tones. Undertones can get a bad rap. You hear people say, “I don’t want a white that looks yellow,” but these undertones can help you complete the look you’re going for. These examples will help you see the difference and inspire you to choose the perfect white with the perfect undertone for your design and lighting style.

Our Top 5 Shades Of White

We used Sherwin Williams Alabaster in my mom’s living room. This is our goal in many projects. It’s warm but doesn’t show too much yellow like other creamy whites. Alabaster has soft beige shades. I like how Sherwin Williams, Color Marketing Director, describes it,

I used pure white in the living room. When I put the swatches on the wall, it was pure white without feeling overdone. I love how pure white looks great paired with alabaster. Mom’s walls are alabaster and her cabinets are pure white. I used the same colors in my new kitchen, which I will share soon. They work perfectly together.

KariAnne of @Thettlewood used the extra white in her living room to create the perfect canvas for the bold colors she introduced. I used extra white in my previous house and it was perfect for my lighting. Sherwin Williams claims that Extra White is their “true white”. It can look a bit cold in some lights, but still looks great with most design styles.

I have two beautiful examples of Sherwin Williams Snowbound for you. My friend Matty from @RusticVivoDesign used Snowbound in her living room. My friend Amber from @TheValeHouse is also snowed in her living room. Snowbound is a fresh white with a subtle gray undertone, which means it looks great. It is a cooler white color without blue shades. It is very versatile in many settings.

Stephanie from @BloomingIvyLane uses marshmallows all over the house. Sherwin Williams Marshmallow is a pleasant white color with subtle red tones that give the color a warm and creamy texture. You can see how beautiful this color would look in Stephanie’s antique-filled home.

Ryan from @TexasForeverFarmhouse used Benjamin Moore Chantilly lace in his living room and it’s amazing. It’s a cool, crisp white. It’s a crisp white that’s not too sterile. With Chantilly lace, it’s hard to tell whether it’s warm or cool because its undertones are so light.

Sherwin Williams Misty: A Complete Color Review

Jessica from the living room @the.old.barn is reserved for white. To the naked eye, Jessica’s living room looks stark white, but when we rate it as a true restrained white, it has enough gray tones to actually be considered a light gray. I really like that about this color. It is a great option if you have gray in other rooms and want to change them nicely.

We used West Highland White in our client Terry’s home. It’s lovely and creamy. I love this color with the European farmhouse look. It is warm but not too yellow. It looks good with a clean white border for a different look.

My friend Angela Benjamin Moore of @The.Rosewood.Home painted her dining room Simply White. Simply White is another warm white that provides a sense of relaxation while also having a light and airy look. Like these other whites, it creates a bright look without feeling sterile. It has a bright yellow color that brings just the right amount of warmth.

Paint samples on the wall, taking into account the lighting. We’ll light up previews on the wall to show what they look like in certain areas. Different lighting can also bring out different undertones of white. Every color draws some kind of undertone color, be it blue, green, pink, gray and so on.

Natural light in your home can make white look pink with rose tones. While the dark area can make the white creamier with a little pink undertones. That’s why it’s so important to have color swatches in different areas to see how the color looks and feels in your specific light under different lighting.
