Sikkens Srd Semi Transparent Stain – Sikkens Proluxe is the most popular wood stain offered by PPG. If you want a simple way to paint exterior wood surfaces, Proluxe SRD is an option worth considering.
Quality stains provide UV, water and stain protection and offer a variety of colors to match surrounding areas while meeting your needs. Sikkens has gained popularity and exposure, but like other points, it has its drawbacks.

Sikkens Cetol stain is now Sikkens Prolux stain. Cetol was the original name of the product introduced to the American market, but Sikkens was founded in Holland in 1792 and the first factory was built in Groningen in 1832.

Originally developed as an industry leading brand for log cabins, the multi-layer system differentiated itself from other competitors and was in high demand in Germany. The application process included spots and stains that preserved the rich and distinctive colors, enhancing the beauty of natural wood and highly respected by franchise owners such as McDonald’s.
The main reason for the subsequent expansion of retail in the US is unclear. However, when the retailer debuted, high prices and seemingly confusing processes suppressed sales as most buyers were forced to familiarize themselves with the multi-level system. , but those who understand the product can better accept the correction.
After a brief deal with retailers like Home Depot, PPG-acquired Sikkens was rebranded as Proluxe in 2017.
Reintroduced iterations of the original Sikken multi-layer system that don’t match the original wood cabinet formulas, but are still ahead of the competition.

The solids content of around 50% by volume is what sets Sikkens apart from other brands. Pigmentation of pure iron oxide allows for a variety of paint colors, from solid color to transparent stains that penetrate deep into the wooden surface.
A light stain maximizes the direction of the wood grain, while a solid color stain, such as paint, completely covers the surface of the wood.
PPG has increased the attention to detail and options available in the Sikkens brand, providing matte and satin finishes and reducing gloss to give more of a wood look.
In particular, changes to the Sikkens SRD wood stain formula make it more marketable and affordable to the public, but when analyzing our long-term use, the changes also came at the expense of durability, while the price went up.

Most buyers buy Sikkens for painting decks, fences, and other exterior woodwork, with Sikken SDR being the most commonly used, but Sikkens offers other products that you may not be familiar with.

Proluxe 23 acts as a second and third coat over the Proluxe primer coat. This coating is the most durable coating that offers a highly structured film that resists cracking, peeling and chipping.
In our experience, Proluxe 23 is the closest system to the original formula that we can get. With increased environmental regulations from the EPA, it is unlikely that the original formulations will reappear.
Some US states, such as California, do not allow air transport and regulate the use of Sickens stains.
Our favorite Sikkens product for decks is Proluxe SRD RE because of its superior formulation. Proluxe SRD RE offers excellent UV resistance and mildew resistance, but is not for everyone as it forms a film on the wood surface.

But because of its lower cost and ease of use, traditional SRD is sold primarily to homeowners and painting contractors.
From experience, we have found that Sikkens SRD does not provide long-term protection. We have discontinued its warranty and recommendation and have only used it at the customer’s request. We strongly encourage the higher construction option, regardless of the glossy look on the wood or wooden joints.
Sikkens SRD is significantly lower than other leading brands. In many ways this produces the same unfortunate results. In terms of fit, Sikkens is slim and flimsy and offers short-term protection from water, mildew and UV rays.
The Sikkens SRD has experienced mold growth in just 8 months of our use. Color fading was on par with other brands, lasting only 7-13 months depending on color depth.

Sikkens SDR RE, on the other hand, requires skill to implement but takes twice as long with only a 25% increase in selling price. SDR RE is one of our top recommendations for painting decks and exterior decks that need protection from direct weather.
The SRD RE stain only covers 200-300 square meters, depending on how dry the wood is, despite its claim of 300-400.
