Hello friends! Thank you so much for the amazing love you show in our backyard. The response has been great and we are very happy with our new place… well, this rude and disrespectful thread has been lighting our place up and it has been over 106 for a few weeks now. You can’t stop there. I don’t have to wait for him to get better so we can go back to hanging out. It’s been hot lately, and we started feeling the heat before the outdoor space was finished during the biggest renovation project of all: painting the deck. Luckily I was able to finish it before they got really hot here. Today I will share how I did that project.

My main goal for our outdoor space is for it to feel like an extension of our home. I really wanted to blur the lines between the inside and the outside and I knew that the mosaic decoration would be a big factor in enhancing the final result. It’s as good as natural redwood, I don’t want it to look or feel like solid hardwood. I love the warm color of the floorboards inside our house, and I hope to do the same outside.

Deck Premium Semi Transparent Wood Stain For Decks, Fences, Siding

Because we use red wood, we have to wait several months after taking it before we paint or top coat it. This allows the wood and oil to dry completely, so it will take the colors better and give a better color. Construction was completed in February and we allowed it to dry for five months before I painted it in July. If you are working with wood such as spruce or douglas fir you may not have to wait as long (or at all) before staining. Once I had a game plan for the project, I ordered pieces and materials from Sherwin-Williams.

I used a set of brushes, roller, metal tray, spray pump, and Sherwin-Williams SuperDeck cleaner and stain remover to complete the project.

As with any painting project, great results start with a clean and well-prepared surface. I started removing everything from the boat and cleaning it. Then I scrubbed it well. To clean and brighten the deck, I used SuperDeck Revive Deck and Siding Brightener. This formula is intended to be used only on fresh or unsealed cedar, redwood or crushed wood.

I found help with this project because you have to make sure you don’t let the product dry on the wood during use. Naomi and I worked on a small section dampening the area and applying SuperDeck Revive with a sprayer.

After using it, he used a poly bristle brush to scrub the area. Then we leave it for about 10 minutes and wash it with a hose at high pressure.

When we find something to go, things quickly become normal. After all the cleaning, we let it dry overnight. The next morning, the wood looks new and refreshed and green….like new again!

With the deck cleaned and ready for staining, I did one more thing with a broom and taped the side of the house where the deck meets to protect the exterior paint.

Now it’s time to declutter. I chose the SuperDeck Exterior Waterborne formula in Semi-Solid Stain Color. When choosing a deck stain, you need to consider maintenance and how often you need to recoat it. A good thumb is the darker, the lighter, or the lighter, less maintenance. Clear coats and semi-transparent colors require maintenance and regular application, but semi-hard or solid colors can last longer before needing to be reapplied. SuperDeck is great because you can put it on soft wood.

Deck Stain: Why Most People Mess Up Their Deck Big Time

The SuperDeck stain has many colors to choose from and I chose Chestnut SW 3524. I wanted a darker shade and this color was perfect when I tested the stain a few months ago. I am again looking for a small place to be

Listen now friends….your girl is afraid to brush her first teeth. A lot of fear. We have saved a long time to build a deck and the last thing I wanted to do was destroy it. This project challenges me to believe in my vision and trust. I started by rolling on the stain with a short stair roller then used a 6 inch brush to gently scrub it. Brush it forward to make it even. Always use with the direction of the grain.

There is a bit of a learning curve when working with stain because it is unlike any other stain I have ever used. You apply it as you would and just roll/brush the product on without washing off the paint after letting it sit on the wood for a few minutes. It took me a while to get my bearings, but when I did it ran fine. I was still working against the heat so I had to hurry. After the first day I realized I wanted to use dirt with a brush so I got out my other brushes (Purdy’s are my FAVE!)

Every time I have a crazy idea to make another stain, please save me from myself! When I tell you this it takes forever!!! I had no idea how big the deck was until I built it. . by hand. Table by table. It was huge and took longer than I expected due to its size. Also, I can only work with it for short periods in the morning and later in the evening when the temperature outside is below 90 degrees. I recommend doing your color project in the spring or fall when the weather isn’t too hot or too cold…just make sure there’s no rain in the forecast. And don’t even begin to review each one. Alone. Board.

It took a few days, but I finally finished the first coat. I really like to take my time to get good results even when I’m done. Little by little I saw the vision begin to come together.

The good thing about the SuperDeck stain in water formula is that it allows for quick drying and recovery time. You can apply more coats after just four hours, and for a semi-hard finish, you’ll need to apply two thin coats to get the result. Depending on the size of your project, this product will help you finish it in a day! After the second coat, I let it dry overnight before continuing.

After about 48 hours I did a water test to see how the stain would hold up to wetness and it was amazing to see how quickly the water rolled off.

I think a lot of people were surprised when I said I was going to paint the ceiling because we use redwood in construction and most people like to leave redwood in its natural state. It is a high quality wood with all kinds of decay and natural properties / resistant properties. It turns the air over time into a warm gray when untreated or dirty. Admittedly, it’s pretty cool, but I knew I was going to mess it up when we first built it. I am very happy with the end result. It looks great and makes the place look like a resort.

Sherwin Williams Super Deck Water Based Stain Reviews: Is It Any Good?

If you are considering a deck staining project I definitely recommend Sherwin-Williams SuperDeck products. They also come in an oil formula as well, which I will try next time I need to stain makeup. I’m a weirdo and I like working with oil-based products because I like that it gives you more control during application. It’s a little harder than liquid stain, (maybe not good for most people) but still gives you a little wiggle room if you want to take your time and get the application right.
