Zinsser Oil Based Primer Dry Time – Every Zinsser foundation comes with a little German magic in each box. How are they different? which is the best? Water, Oil or Shellfish? Do you still need foundation? Here’s what you need to know about each.
I can give a direct answer to the last question – you need a good foundation. Old, stained or tough-to-stick surfaces? Smoke damage, heavy bleeding, metal, plastic or laminate furniture—you need a primer, and luckily you can find the right version for your needs.
Zinsser Oil Based Primer Dry Time
Zinsser’s 123 Primer can be used on almost any surface and takes an hour to dry. Low odor and clean water for indoor use. I recommend it for low traffic items, but not for finished wood like raw MDF, as the amount of water will cause it to swell. If you’re painting a smooth or glossy surface, such as a laminated IKEA cabinet, I’d look at Sincer’s other offerings as they provide a stronger bond. Cleanup is easy with plain old H20, you can simply wipe it off your skin and your brush will be in good shape and fighting for another day.
B I N Primer Sealer Stain Killer
This is my go to stain pad product. Water stain on your ceiling that you just can’t seem to get rid of? This is one product from the Zinsser Foundation range that I recommend. Again, the drying time is one hour, but it can be used both internally and externally. It’s in the middle of the price range, so it offers a nice middle ground if you don’t want to pay for a bin.
The downside is that it smells quite strong as it is a tri-zinc base oil which should be used in a well ventilated area, so you may feel the taste in your throat after prolonged use. The third time is thicker, but you can dilute it by adding a little white spirit, test a little with it before you dilute the whole 5 liter can. It is not as clean as 123, you have to use white spirit and the brush will never be the same again.
At 45 minutes, it has the fastest drying time of the three Zinsser primers. It is the toughest of the three and sticks to any surface. It is very thin and easy to apply, but you have to be careful as it can drip. This is my favorite part of turning old varnished wood into beautiful modern painted wood. It’s alcohol based and has a very strong smell, not as bad as masking tape, but if you use it inside, it’s best to leave a window open. Mineral alcohol should be used for cleaning.
Zinsser Cover Stain 1 Qt. White Oil Based Interior/exterior Primer And Sealer 3504
All three Zinsser foundations are great quality, you just need to know which one to use for which application.
Zinsser 123 is excellent for surfaces with easy adhesion and low odor. Zinsser Cover Stain provides durability and adhesion to shiny, glossy surfaces. It’s especially good on raw wood or MDF, eliminating the risk of flaking with water-based 123 primers. Zinsser BIN is the toughest, with the highest price tag, but the highest catch.
The bin is ideal if you’re painting cabinets or kitchen cabinets and turning varnished wood into painted wood, but make sure the window is open.
