Honda has done its homework by planting its first turbocharged engine—a 1.5-liter unit that produces 190 horsepower—into the CR-V and pairing it with one of the best automatic transmissions (CVTs) available. While most crossovers have curb weight limits, the CR-V has one of the lowest at 1500 pounds. Any parent of a street racer will be disappointed by the CR-V’s appeal. Instead, they, along with everyone else, will appreciate its comfortable ride, quick steering and powerful brakes. The CR-V’s adaptive and compliant ride makes for a fun ride, long or short. Its responsive brakes mean you get the stopping power you need when you ask for it. The CR-V hybrid is powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder and two electric motors that combine for 201 horsepower. We found the hybrid to be smooth and unobtrusive, and we appreciated that Honda minimized the engine’s drone on the highway by adding sound-deadening equipment and turning on track noise cancellation. This provides a quieter experience than the base engine, which is among the noisiest in its class when the throttle is pressed.
The CR-V is available with two engine options that are economical when it comes to fuel consumption. Up front, the gas-only model is rated at 28 mpg in the city and 34 on the highway; The all-wheel drive vehicle is rated at 27 mpg in the city and 32 on the highway. We tested the CR-V with all-wheel drive in our 75 mph highway fuel economy test, which is part of our extensive testing, and it got 28 mpg. The lackluster infotainment system is the CR-V’s weak link. It’s not bad, but it inadvertently encourages you to use other options like wheel-mounted controls. There’s a slightly redeeming notch for the on-screen volume control, but no switch.
