Affordable Flex Nib Fountain Pen – Our office will be closed on Friday, October 27th for a company mental health half-day beginning at 12:00 PM ET.

There is no official definition of when a feather becomes a folding feather. Everything is very subjective, depends on the user. Traditionally, a flex nib refers to a nib that bends or creates “gaps” in the tines, causing variations in the lines. If the nib basically bends up and down without much line variation, is it a bendable nib because it technically bends?

This subjectivity can complicate matters, so we selected ten fountain pens with different nibs to compare and contrast their bending capabilities.

Konrad is an oldie but a goodie! Ink production may not be the best, but this writing tool has a great nib for an even better price.

This pen has excellent line variation. You may not have many rejections, but there are many spreads. When turning the nib, avoid overloading it or you will get a rail. It is a great affordable tool for artists and enthusiasts.

You might not think this pen has a bendable nib, but the nib is softer than most standard gold nibs and if you press hard enough, you’ll get a slight bend on the downstroke. Line variations are available. If you want to add some flair to your writing, this tool can give you that extra pizzazz.

Pineider Alchemist has one of the best soft nibs on the market – the Quill Nib. This nib is found in most Penider fountain pens and has good bounce, but it’s a wet writing nib so there isn’t much line variation, meaning it puts a lot of ink on the page.

The triple tail nib spreads a lot of ink and is very wet on the page. It has a musical nib with three ears so it can write like a quill. The ink may bleed a lot, but if you don’t press too hard on the nib you’ll be happy.

The Pilot Custom uses a 912 FA nib, also known as a Falcon nib (the one on the Pilot Falcon is different and not to be confused with), and it has plenty of bounce. It also has great width, which provides some cool line variations. There can be some skip with this nib, so if you’re flexible you’ll want to write gently, but overall, it’s still a quality nib.

What makes this fountain pen nib special is that it has a bar that extends over the nib and a button that can be turned to push down or pull the bar back to soften or tighten the nib.

When the bar is retracted, the coil is in soft mode. For rejection, it has some movement, but it does not open much in the teeth, but the ink flows well on the paper.

You won’t see much line variation when using the extra fine nib with this fountain pen, but it does have a noticeable bounce, making for a comfortable writing experience.

When you use the extra soft fine nib with this fountain pen, you get incredible line variation – thin lines are very thin. Not much bounce, but because it starts out so thin, you can get a lot of different line strokes. A lot of spikes are not open, but honestly it is not necessary.

Last but not least, we have the comfortable JoWo OmniFlex nib. It’s a wet nib that applies a lot of ink to the page, so you don’t see a lot of line variation. When you bend this nib, you get some variation in the line, and since it’s a steel nib, you don’t get a ton of bounce.

Best Fountain Pen For Long Writing Sessions [2023]

Here it is! We’ve used ten different nibs to determine what a Flex pen is, and we’ve come to the conclusion that whether a pen is a flex nib or not depends on your personal writing style.

No international standard states whether a modern fountain pen actually has a “flex” nib; Honestly, it doesn’t matter. For example, one fountain pen brand’s extra fine nib may differ from another company’s. That does not mean that one of them is not a real additional punishment. It just means they use a different scale.

For more information about a particular pen before buying a pen you can read reviews on our website or contact our customer support team. Have fun and enjoy the extra bounce any of these pens bring to your writing adventures! Keep writing! Many pen companies have tried to emulate vintage-style flexible nibs, from the inexpensive steel nibs sold by Noodlers to the more expensive offerings from the latest Wahl-Eversharp, but no one has gotten it right. Until now (maybe). Aurora’s new 70th Anniversary 88 features a specially processed 14k flex nib that comes as close to reproducing true “vintage style flex” as I’ve experienced in modern pens. While foldable nibs aren’t really my thing, I know a good thing when I see one.

Rants Of The Archer: Fountain Pen Review: Bluedew Pens Flex Strontium Flame

Kenro Industries, Aurora’s US distributor, is actively promoting the new 70th anniversary pen by holding “Flexit” events in cities across the country, including the recent Baltimore Washington International Pen Show, which I attended. (Look for it on the Instagram hashtag #flexitbwi.) Kenro had several new flex pens on his table for attendees to check out, and he graciously allowed me to take one home for review (this one with their long-awaited bottle of Aurora Blue ( (black ink).So what’s the verdict?

I love this pen and this pen. And this is coming from a man who can’t write with a retractable pen to save his life. No, I’m serious, watch my ridiculously bad writing sample video. But if you’re a regular letterer or just enjoy calligraphy, you’ll want to check out Aurora’s latest creation. The 14k nib is soft, giving you lighter and more line variation than many “flexible” steel nibs – not to mention a smoother writing experience – but it’s not so soft that you feel like you’re holding the nib. Going to spring. . It’s quite similar to the Omas “Extra Flexible” nibs released a few years ago, but they were very wet, felt very brittle when I tested them, and I’ve heard reports of them breaking easily and not holding up. Perfect for everyday use. The Aurora nib is much stronger and actually works very well as a regular writer, leaving a fine/medium fine line when you write with light pressure and minimal bending of the nib. It was a little wet to use on an office paper, but the Rhodia dot paper handled it well.

The Aurora 88 flex nib features an ebonite feeder for ink flow with the nib. The 88 also has a nice big paint window so you can see when you need a refill.

The Best Calligraphy Pens And Inks For Beginners

I’m not familiar with vintage flex pens to make an intelligent comment on how they compare to the very soft “wet noodle” flex pens made by Waterman in the 1920s and 1930s. If that’s what you expect from an Aurora Flex nib, you may be disappointed, but I’ll note that Dan Smith of The Nibsmith points out that he can sharpen the nib to maximize line variation. Further. details.

The Aurora 88 is a classic fountain pen. The version I have is made of dark green glazed resin with gold trim.

The “88” is Aurora’s longtime flagship pen and one of those pieces that has been on my list for years, but for whatever reason never made it into my case. While I don’t often go for flex nibs, there are 88 stunningly beautiful models, from last year’s “Soul” limited edition to the upcoming “Nebulosa” limited edition, which is satin black with rose gold trim. Up to the edit. I enjoy the 88 size, it has a high capacity piston system and is very easy to write with. You’ll see it on the blog soon!

Guide To Writing With A Flex Nib Fountain Pen

I wouldn’t get an Aurora 88 with the new flex nib for the 70th anniversary, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t! Supply is extremely limited, with only 188 pieces of each color distributed worldwide. The pen retails for $650 and is available in limited quantities from Aurora dealers such as Anderson Pen, Venice Pen, Pen Shellett and Nibsmith. If this is the pen you like, I will respond as soon as I get the color you want.

Disclaimer: As I mentioned, Kenro Industries loaned me this pen for review purposes. Except for Aurora’s bottle
