Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore are the two largest paint retailers in the United States. If you’re looking for paints, you’re probably starting to wonder what the difference is between them. Both offer dozens of products and an impressive number of colors.
We spoke to experts from five paint companies to get exclusive insights into both brands. For the most part, everyone said that both have some good product lines supported by large R&D budgets. But there are some cases where they might prefer one over the other.
To Prime Or Not To Prime?
The pros also explained which paint to use when DIY or hiring professionals, what is the best paint for furniture, and more.

When we asked interior designers and color experts for advice on living room paint colors, they suggested a mix of both companies, but generally suggested a broader selection than Benjamin Moore.
Pricing Benjamin Moore Vs Sherwin Williams
“Different brands have different strengths when it comes to color,” said color consultant Amy Wax. “If I choose earthy grays, beiges and blues more, I will pay more attention to Sherwin-Williams. With Benjamin Moore, sometimes they have colors that are a little brighter, a little more energetic,” she said. “So for me, it’s a question of what I’m trying to get at is what brand of paint I use.”
“I usually tell people to pick any color,” said Travis Nolan, founder of Old Crow Painting. Nine times out of ten, he found that both companies could match him.
However, he explained that Benjamin Moore’s Aura line seemed a little more difficult to execute. Both Matt Kunz, president of Five Star Painting, and Michael Camper of M&M Precision Painting said Sherwin-Williams has excellent color matching software and mixers.

Camper said that despite the brand’s claim that one coat is sufficient, you need to apply a second coat and prime the walls first. “Apply two coats and you are guaranteed the highest quality finish,” he said.
“Many people want to use Regal Select or Aura by Benjamin Moore, especially if they are in very sunny areas,” Kunz said.
Nolan cited Sherwin-Williams’ resilience to Florida’s climate. When the sun heats the water molecules between the paint and the wood, they try to evaporate through the paint. “They just peeled off the paint and that’s why we have a lot of peeling here,” he said. Resist dries quickly and retains heat and moisture well.

Both Kunz and Camper said that when a painting crew insists on a particular brand and type of paint, it’s because they know how to get the best results with it.
“We’ve found that some teams will get very accustomed to using one type of paint and will gravitate towards it because they know it without even thinking about it,” Kunz said. “They know the level of coverage. They know which roller to use – everything they need for that particular type of color.”
Camper likes to use certain products over and over again for the same reason. “I’m learning about its characteristics, how it flows, how long it takes to dry and whether it’s better to swim,” he said.

Almost everyone we spoke to suggested using a more expensive, higher quality paint. With cheaper paint, “if you hire a professional painter and you want them to do a good job, they’ll usually have to use more product to cover it, so it’ll cost them more labor,” Camper said.
Materials, including paint, account for about 10 percent of the total cost, so it makes more sense to save on labor if possible, he said.
If you paint it yourself, the price calculation will be slightly different than that of professionals. The biggest cost will be the product.
Selecting The Right Paint
Although more expensive, self-leveling paints like Benjamin Moore Aura or Sherwin-Williams Emerald Urethane (for finishing) can be a little more forgiving of wall imperfections and brush strokes.
If you want paint that’s easy to touch up, Camper suggests Benjamin Moore. With Sherwin-Williams, “the more layers you wear, the shinier it will be,” he said. Although chipping (shiny spots on the wall that look like different paints) tends to occur with paints that have a higher sheen than matte or matte paints, Camper found that Benjamin Moore’s satin seemed easier to paint over than the Sherwin satin line -Williams.
Painting your cabinets is a labor-intensive process. Cabinets are also subject to shock, grease, steam and other hazards.
Paint: Reviews, Brand Comparisons, And Buyer’s Guides
Water-based alkyd paints cover and dry as hard as oil paints, but are easier to clean and less dangerous than latex paints.

Availability: Searching 11 zip codes far enough from Alaska to Maine, we found Benjamin Moore in multiple locations. However, they were often limited in their options, only offering the budget Ben line.
Types Of Interior Paint For Your Home
Travis Nolan, founder of Old Crow Painting, said he likes to support local businesses and he prefers Benjamin Moore. However, Michael Camper, owner of M&M Precision Painting, said the company’s private store hours may not be as consistent as those of Sherwin-Williams locations, which, for example, are always open on weekends.
Customer Service: The painting companies we spoke with were split between Benjamin Moore and Sherwin-Williams when it came to customer service. It seems to depend mostly on individual store managers and employees.
Colors: “I think Benjamin Moore offers the best colors,” Camper said. “And if you’re looking for something vibrant, like a dark red or a royal blue or something like that, Benny Moore would probably be a better option.”

With thousands of colors to choose from, choosing just one (or the entire palette) can be overwhelming. Both Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore have ways to help you find the right one.
Color Elements: Once you’ve chosen a color family or specific shade, it’s a good idea to start comparing different shades to each other. “The color ones are the best way to narrow down the process,” said Sue Wadden, director of color marketing at Sherwin-Williams. It’s hard to tell if a color is warm or cool if you don’t have something nearby to compare it to.
My Review Of Benjamin Moore Regal Select Interior Paint
Online tools: Laura Bruqi of Brush Rite Painting said both companies “have great, user-friendly websites where customers can choose a color.” Both have programs that let you imagine what your room will look like painted a new color, although it obviously won’t be an exact match.
Benjamin Moore’s Personal Color Visualizer allows you to upload your own photos and “paint” your cabinets, walls, and trim any color you want. The tools are easy to use and do a good job of showing the details beneath the digital paint layer. To use it you need to register with your email address.
ColorSnap Visualizer from Sherwin-Williams is very similar. You can use your photo or company photo. The results are slightly worse than what you’ll get from Benjamin Moore, but you don’t need to register.
Sherwin Williams Vs Benjamin Moore: Which Paint Is Better?
Sherwin-Williams has another useful tool, the Snap It button, which creates color palettes from any photo and matches them to the brand’s paint colors. It’s not a perfect solution, but it gives you a starting point.
Sample Jars: If you’re hesitating between different colors, you can purchase small quantities of paints from both companies and try them out. Greg Agosta, owner of Level 5 Fine Finishes, recommends painting a billboard instead of a wall. If you apply them to walls, you may need additional prep work and additional coats to cover them when you are ready to paint the final color. Additionally, these samples are for testing purposes only and do not have the same lifespan as actual products.
Color to Go from Sherwin-Williams costs about $10 per liter (32 ounces). We have observed some sample inventory issues.
