Oil paints have a beautiful finish, are hard drying and durable, have good adhesion, flow well (on the surface itself) and are easy to apply. However, the problem is that they have a high VOC content, they have a lot of smell, require solvents for cleaning and the drying time is more than 24 hours.
In contrast, latex (water-based) glazes are easier to clean, have less odor, lower VOC content, and dry faster. This is because the carrier for their latex paint pigments is water.
However, latex paints/glazes lack the quality finish of their oil-based brethren, don’t run as well and have less adhesion. Durability is generally accepted.
Advance by Benjamin Moore is a low VOC water-reducible alkyd. This means that Advance is an alkyd that uses water as a carrier instead of a solvent.

In theory, it gives us all the benefits of an oil-based alkyd with none of the negatives. They usually combine the benefits of oil and water-based enamels in a hybrid enamel.
In theory, Benjamin Moore’s Advance has superior appearance, flow, adhesion, durability and longevity, cleans up with water instead of solvents, has low odor and VOCs, and dries very quickly.

However, homeowners often have to leave their homes throughout the process, I have to buy and dispose of solvents to dissolve and clean, and I am concerned after inhaling high levels of VOCs. I did about my health.
I immediately thought the concept was too good to be true, so I had to try it myself.
Plus, I love that I don’t have to cover my body like I do with oil. Because oil dries slowly, droplets of overspray in the air can stick to almost anything in the room, so I’m constantly exposed to overspray. I wear a full spray suit, mask, earplugs to protect my brain, eye covering (anything that easily penetrates my inner workings, I’m protected).
Given the basic safety and cleaning benefits, I want to know if Advance sprays well, brushes well, smooths, sticks, lasts, and does it pass the eye test?

When I spray kitchen cabinets, I use an HVLP sprayer which is a low pressure high volume sprayer. My personal favorite is the Wagner Flexio 5000. I like the flexio 5000, it’s cheap but it sprays like a professional sprayer.
HVLP sprayers generally require thinner paint than airless sprayers, so I dilute Advance 20% with water before spraying. For me, 20% is the perfect point to thin the paint to create a fine mist when sprayed.
I love advance sprays on my HLVP. It flows very well and is smooth on me. It atomizes very well with the HVLP and I can say it sprays as well as any water or oil based paint I have sprayed with the HVLP.

The Complete Guide To Benjamin Moore Cabinet Paint: Top 5 Paints For Homeowners
I recently enameled all the woodwork on the main level of the house using only Advance. I used both their primer and satin finish. This includes kitchen cabinets, windows, doors, trim and built-ins.
I sprayed kitchen cabinets and doors for a nice mirror look, but used a brush on all the base areas.
I like Advance Brushes with fine bristle brushes. Although, when brushing, it runs easily. I have to come back every 10 minutes and check my work to make sure no bubbles have formed.
The strange thing is, I never experienced running when I sprayed. Brushing creates a heavier stain than spraying, which leads to runoff.

Tip: When brushing enamel like Advance, use a quality brush whenever possible. A fine brush will smooth the paint and allow it to flow better over an even surface.
Although Advance’s specs say it dries in 4 hours and can be repainted in 16 hours, I find it dries faster.
Assuming the area you’re painting is relatively low humidity, Advance can dry in about an hour like any water-based paint.
Sanding and recoating usually takes a little longer. I find that I can usually sand and recoat the advance after 3-4 hours.

Cooking is different from drying. Cured paint refers to when it has reached its maximum hardness. It usually takes 7 to 30 days for most colors to heal completely.
In the real world, completely dry paint means you won’t scratch it easily. It has reached its maximum durability.
Advance says it takes 30 days to reach maximum hardness (full cure), I found that to be true as well.
Being able to sand the primer and topcoat effectively is important, especially when you’re trying to make cabinet doors smooth.
Choosing Paint Colors & Our New Home Inspiration
I have found Advance Primer Sands and Powders to be good. Not as good as some oil-based sanding primers, but good enough to get a smooth, finished surface.
The advance topcoat is not and should not be sanded as well as the primer, but light sanding between coats really works, creating a perfectly smooth surface before the final coat is sprayed and brushed.
The ability to hold tooth enamel is important. No matter how good your job is, eventually you will need to touch up your painted cabinets.
Some enamels have a terrible touch. If you try to cut small parts, they stick out like sore thumbs.

I noticed that the advance is good. Small bumps usually heal within 24 hours and go unnoticed in less prominent areas.
It’s true that Benjamin Moore’s Advance runs smoothly and has a low VOC content, but what about its long-term durability? Will it survive your home with kids, pets and everyday use?
My kitchen cabinets are not pre-glazed. However, I’ve probably used Advance in over 20 of my client’s kitchens over the past 5+ years.
If the Advance doesn’t hold up as well and isn’t easily cut, scratched or damaged, I expect a lot of calls, especially for households with small children and pets.
