Benjamin Moore Wood Stain Colors – General stains, as well as coating stains, have become a problematic element of paint coatings in recent years. Specifically, these projects are more challenging because strict new regulations have come into effect limiting the amount of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in paint. As a house painter in Westchester County, New York, I was looking for a stain that would protect and beautify wood surfaces, resist mildew, be easy to apply, withstand the elements, and most importantly, be safe for the environment. A good product that we have had success with is Benjamin Moore Arborcoat Stains®. Our paint team loves its layout and has used it for many of our new wood stain projects. Arborcoat Stain® is available in clear, semi-transparent, semi-solid and solid. It’s 100% acrylic, designed to penetrate wood, protect, resist wear, and beautify wood surfaces on decks, siding, and patios. Its 100% acrylic makes it the perfect solution for mold-prone areas and surfaces. Arborcoat Stain® can be applied to new and pressure-treated wood and is ideal for softwoods such as cedar and pine. However, I would avoid using it on hardwoods like mahogany, oak and oak.
Benjamin Moore Wood Stain Colors
One of the main things I like about Arborcoat Stain® is the ease of application and concealing properties in solid colors. Clear and semi-clear Arboarcoat Stains® must be coated with Arborcoat Clear (636). It is a low gloss protective coating that protects the painted surface from the elements. The good news is that this clear coat can be applied the same day you stain your deck. When it comes to keeping surfaces clean and semi-transparent, Benjamin Moore recommends a light wash of the surface and an annual application of a clear protective coat (636) to keep the wood looking beautiful and structurally sound. There are two types of stains: oil-based and acrylic-based. The oil penetrates the wood and protects it from the inside, while the acrylic sits on top and protects it from moisture. If your deck has a stain, it’s best to stick with that type of stain. Do not apply acrylic over oily stains. That would be a disaster.

When the stain is applied, it flows smoothly and masks the grain of the wood without hiding the structure. It is designed to protect and beautify all types of wooden roofs. This is a quick drying stain that only needs water to clean.
Can be used on previously painted and stained wood in good condition. If there is general peeling, all previous coatings should be removed.
New wood: Smooth wood trim, trim or decking should be thoroughly sanded or treated with Benjamin Moore® Brighten, Brightener & Neutralizer (317) to break up the “mill polish” and allow for proper adhesion. After preparation, check the penetration by applying a few drops of water to the dry substrate. If water does not penetrate quickly, repeat preparation or contact your Benjamin Moore® dealer.

Weathered Wood: Before painting weathered wood, treat weathered wood with Benjamin Moore® Restore to Gray Weathered Wood (316) according to label directions until hard surfaced (loose or damaged wood fibers are removed).
Pre-stained surfaces: Can be used on pre-stained and painted wood in good condition. If decks have general peeling, all previous finishes should be removed by sanding with an On Floor machine or Benjamin Moore® Remove, Finish Remover (315).
Non-weathered areas such as eaves, eaves, ceilings or protected wall areas should be washed with Benjamin Moore® Clean, Multi-Purpose Cleaner (318) and rinsed with a strong stream of garden hose to remove surface salts that may interfere with proper performance. adhesion

Transparency is the extent to which the natural grain of the wood is visible, achieved by using one of the following options… A clear stain has no added color and shows the natural beauty of the wood. A semi-transparent stain will let most of the grain and texture pass through with a slightly brighter color. A semi-solid stain, with its deeper shades, covers many imperfections while highlighting some of the grain and texture of the wood. A solid stain offers the greatest depth of color, covering all imperfections and allowing the wood texture to show slightly.
Consider Color: Options Abound When thinking about deck color, consider the same color as your home’s decor. This method sets your deck apart from the main field of your home for a cohesive look that still emphasizes the architecture of your deck. For a more monochromatic look, use a shade similar to the base color of your home, a good choice if you want features like a fire pit or dining room to be the focal point of your deck. From wood gray to warm red to forest green, there are many colors to explore.
The Importance of Wood Wood remains the most common choice for decks. More expensive woods like mahogany or ipe offer a beautiful grain and texture that shines through when a transparent stain, such as clear or semi-transparent, is used. Softer, less expensive woods such as southern yellow pine or pressure-treated cedar benefit from the inherent weather barrier of semi-hard and hard stains. Wood alternatives called “composite decks” are also a popular choice. Although often marketed as maintenance-free, composite decking does require protection from discoloration as well as the elements, just like its wood counterparts; Arborcoat Solid Deck & Siding Stain provides excellent color retention for these popular deck options.
Limit your scope Ready to take big steps? Staining or staining wooden chairs and tables is a less intensive project than refinishing an entire deck. Almost any light color will make neutrals and wood tones pop and easily liven up a deck. Another option is to paint only the rails and deck rails. Draw from the interior’s color palette to bring the interior and exterior together, yet subtly. Or consider using a combination of spots to show where one part of the deck begins and another part ends.
