I’m on a mission to brighten up the look and feel of our living room and have been looking for the perfect gray color to repaint this space. Lucky for me, I have a great group of interior design lovers (you!) who will be happy to share your gray paint! I asked for your preferences on Instagram and Instagram Stories and compiled over 500 responses to come up with the top ten gray paint colors – these are the ones you’ve used, loved and recommended to others.

Before I delve into these ten favorite gray paint colors, I’d like to offer a few words of caution – the same paint color on your home won’t necessarily look exactly like someone else’s. I used to test paint colors by taking little pint-sized samples and painting them on a wall or poster board, but since writing this post I’ve switched to the Samplize samples that you can buy. These are leather and stick swatches with real paint applied to them, making the colors more accurate than the printed swatches you’d find in color strips. And it’s a lot more work than just painting swatches on the wall. I love that you can reposition the samples in different parts of the room and how easy it is to place different samples side by side for comparison.

I usually narrow the sample down to 3-4 of my favorite paint colors, but I’ve included nine of my ten favorites (all but the lightest gray) in this post so I can share them with you! It’s pretty crazy how ten colors that are all gray are actually very different from each other (I know this picture looks a little dark but I kept it that way because I think it shows the true color better, than if I lit it). ):

I’m a huge fan of Anew Gray and this is one of my recent contenders for our living room. This is a very warm mid-tone gray shade that has the greatest depth of gray on this list. If you’re looking for a gray that’s rich in color but not too dark, this might be for you. And in my picky space, where odd shades come with a lot of gray, the New Gray swatch I put on the wall was no surprise. A great example of Anew Gray is Mandy from Country Dog Homes:

Behr Wheat Bread is one of the newest gray paint colors that many of you are using and loving! I’m not surprised that it has the same LRV as Revere Pewter since both colors are almost identical in terms of color intensity, but Behr Wheat Bread definitely leans more towards beige than Revere Pewter. Alpaca is a little more gray than beige, and can cast a purple hue in some spaces (which it actually did when I tried it in my living room). But it worked well for some of my readers, and it looks perfectly soothingly neutral on Emily from the wonderful gender-neutral nursery Table and Hearth:

Best Greige Paint Colors

Repose Gray is a color I’ve personally seen and love, and it’s also one of your favorites. It can sometimes have pinkish hues depending on the type of light it is taken in. I love this photo of Repose Gray in Marnie Hansen’s fabulous foyer because it shows how the color can change slightly depending on how much light hits it:

Pleasant gray is a color that has long been loved and used in many spaces. It’s quite bright but still has enough depth to be interesting and is a favorite color for some of my decorators. As the name suggests… nice in almost any space. Linda from The Home I Create used Agreeable Gray for her office guest room and it was a great choice:

Of the nine paint swatches I put on the walls in our living room, Balboa Mist has the second most purple hue out of the gray green colors (most are Alpaca), but then again my space tends to bring out more tones. It is sometimes listed as your favorite, so it is clear in most spaces and works beautifully. I really like Ania’s living room from DIY Decor Mama:

Behr’s Silver Drop is a light gray shade with a slight beige touch to warm it up. It looks like true gray in some spaces and more gray in others. He’s sure to look amazing in this gorgeous Studio McGee living room:

Classic Gray is the lightest of the range and is a nice, simple light grey, but not cold – the name is actually the perfect description! This is one of the gray paint colors on the list that I didn’t try on my living room wall, just because I knew it would be too light for what I was looking for. But it’s definitely a good choice for the color of the walls in this gorgeous room by Studio McGee:
