After years of decorating my own rooms, from my parents’ room to my dorm room to my apartment, I’ve gathered some tips, tricks and secrets to help you decorate your room on a budget with ease and fun.

How To Decorate A Small Living Room: 10 Tricks

I hope this gives you a chance to catch your breath. Yes, we want your space to look amazing without breaking the bank. It is possible, I promise!

One of the most important steps (and my favorite step) is to create a vision board. This is very important because, like everything in life, you don’t want to face disaster blindly.

I like to start with a vision board so I can clearly see what colors suit me, what style suits me, etc. If you feel stuck or don’t know where you want to go, try making a vision board. If you think the inspiration images you use don’t go together, eventually (99% of the time) they will end up going together.

Everyone has their own style when it comes to creating a vision board. Personally, I love creating my art on Pinterest. This is the easiest method I’ve found and usually gives me all the inspiration I need and more.

After creating your vision board on Pinterest, copy and paste the images into a Google Doc, print them, cut them out, pin them to your board, and voila, your vision board is ready. Also, creating a vision board is very therapeutic and motivating. (Can you tell I like it?)

As I said earlier, there are many ways to create a vision board. Your best bet is to cut a picture out of a magazine, use Instagram, or throw it back on Tumblr (there are some really good ones out there).

If you don’t want to go through the trouble of cutting out pictures, you can create a vision board on Pinterest, but don’t print it! You can still get a good picture in the style you want.

My goodness, this tip is so important. In fact, if you have limited space, choose bright colors!! If you buy a mansion, we promise you will be able to create moody dark colors. However, bright colors can make the entire room seem 10 times larger than it actually is.

Also, paint is not expensive!! This is something you can do in a weekend that will transform your room. Dark colors absorb all the light in a room, especially if it is small. This does not mean that only white can be used. If you like blue, there are many wonderful light blues out there. Stick to your taste and try to be as light as possible when it comes to walls and large pieces (furniture, paintings, etc.).

Apartments are notoriously small, and you don’t want to accidentally create an extremely claustrophobic space. This is a fantastic tip when you’re on a budget because it basically tells you not to buy more than you need. Less is more. I repeat: less is more.

Too many details can do more harm than good. Simple and minimalist is better for apartments. I promise when it all comes together it won’t look ordinary! You try to put together a puzzle and feel overwhelmed when all the pieces are very complicated.

Curtain!! Seriously, they get the job done. I love adding curtains to my room when I want some spice and a bit of a glamorous feel. In fact, if you want to keep them company, add some curtains. They will make your place look 10 times more expensive.

Pro tip: Hang your curtains as high as possible. This can create the illusion that the apartment is larger than it actually is. Here is a video on how to hang curtains: Click here.

Fortunately, frugality is culturally acceptable. (Just kidding. Haha, what is “trendy” and it’s never stopped me before?) Thrifting is great because you can find unique pieces that will make your room totally unique. Also, the prices are mostly fantastic.

To save, you have to be creative. Most pieces are great, but some may require a quick DIY. But I promise. In the end, you’ll be so thankful you saved!

If you don’t absolutely need it, don’t buy it. There are no ifs, ands, and buts. If you’re on a tight budget and stick to the basics and work overtime, you can collect the perfect pieces for your room.

In today’s world, we are constantly filled with new things and things to buy. We get so overwhelmed that the only way to relieve that feeling is to fill the space. But doing so will only make you feel more claustrophobic and frustrated. As I said before, less is more!

Follow the last idea, but leave room for growth. You don’t have to pay out a lot of money at once. Your style will evolve with you. So make sure to leave some space for both of them to grow together!

If you want to make your space look bigger on a budget, consider adding a mirror. Seriously, they work. You won’t believe the difference they make. I highly recommend it!

Time to get smart!! There are endless DIYs you can do. You can save money and still get the look you want. If it’s a particularly expensive product you’re looking at, see if you can do it yourself!

When you have guests over, you want them to walk into your room and think, “Wow, this is totally [insert name]’s home!” If you think it doesn’t, find out what you can add to make your apartment more unique.

I love gallery walls and they are not that hard to do. Find a picture you like, choose a beautiful frame and hang it on the wall at home!

A variety of fabrics will tie the space together in ways you never imagined. Try mixing up the textures of your pillows or add a rug at the end of the bed. This small touch will make an incredible difference to your room!
