When I went to a Korean supermarket (Homeplus!) in 2016, I was surprised and disappointed. Of course, there were great food options like ramyun and steamed soups. However, at the same time, I could not believe my eyes when I saw the price of meat and “special” fruits.
Although supermarkets may be similar between countries, many differences force us to find new shopping habits. With that in mind, I wanted to create a post today that discusses everything you need to know about supermarkets in Korea.
Whether you’re looking for the cheapest supermarket in Korea or trying to find a specialty grocery store that won’t bother you, I hope this article will help take all the mystery out of grocery shopping on the mainland.

There are many options for grocery shopping in Korea. Before we dive into what makes each supermarket unique, let’s break them down!
Within a few hours of being in Korea, you will probably come across one of the big chains, especially hypermarkets. Below is a chart of the top chain stores in Korea that you should know about. You can find plenty of local stores in these chains that sell all the essentials, but with little variation.
Grocery Stores Open On Thanksgiving 2023
While grocery shopping in Korea is generally similar to other countries, there are a few things to keep in mind. Some of these concepts may sound familiar to you, but many were new (and surprising) to me!
There are many other variations that you can see when shopping in Korean supermarkets. However, there are a few key points to keep in mind that will make your life a lot easier!
Korea is a comfortable country. Although online supermarket shopping is not unique to Korea, its efficiency is unmatched in Korea. Next day delivery is often possible. In fact, almost always! The exception is major holidays where there may be some delays.
Multifood Supermarket Opens In Windsor’s West End
Emart, Homeplus and Lotte Mart offer online supermarket shopping. Apart from these three, you can buy from Coupang, Gmarket, GS Shop and Market Kurly. At the time of this writing, all of these platforms except Gmarket are only available in Korean. They can be navigated with Papago and common sense (assuming you don’t speak Korean), but can be frustrating to use.
Also, many of these platforms do not support non-Korean payment methods or have very frustrating links. In my experience, Coupang and Gmarket are much easier to use than the alternatives. However, Gmarket is the only Korean online grocery shopping platform that fully supports all international payment methods.
Unfortunately, the English version of Gmarket is still limited. Using the Korean version of the site, you can shop directly from supermarkets such as Homeplus, Lotte Mart, and GS Fresh. While the English site has many options, it cannot be denied that the Korean version of the site has a wider range of products.

If you’re interested in online grocery shopping, I recommend choosing a platform and getting a guide to using it. There are great guides online detailing how to use all of these platforms.
There are three major supermarket chains in Korea. These are Emart, Homeplace and Lotte Mart. However, they are much more than supermarkets, hence their name: hypermarkets. They are designed to hold everything you can imagine. When they focus on food, they get a lot more inside.
Although each hypermarket is slightly different, they are similar in many ways. They usually have multiple floors with different items on each floor. They will also have restaurants and cafes inside. Therefore, it is easy to spend a lot of time with them!

All of these networks are well staffed and easy to ask for help or navigate. In fact, when I visited Emart recently, I think there are more employees than customers! If you can’t find something, it’s very easy to find someone to help you.
Many You cannot go a day without hearing or encountering a Lotte product in Korea. This giant company is the same one behind Lotte Tower, Lotte World and Lotte Foods… I guess the name makes sense. However, Lotte is one of the largest chaebol in Korea and they also own a large supermarket chain.
Lotte Mart is the third largest “hypermarket” in South Korea, after Emart and Homeplus. Lotte Mart is located between Emart and Homeplace in its establishment and has now become the backbone of Korean grocery business.

With less than 100 branches in Korea, Lotte Mart is smaller than Emart and Homeplus. However, it has unique advantages that make it worth the purchase! One, it has the best fresh produce of any supermarket in Korea, including meat!
Lotte Mart is also known for its prepared foods. Lotte Mart’s fried chicken is especially popular because it’s cheap, plentiful, and really good! Even after trying different types of fried chicken in Seoul, Lotte Mart’s chicken is decent.

Like most of the big chains on this list, Lotte Mart is not a supermarket or grocery store. Instead, it is a “hypermarket”, which is basically a department store that focuses on food products. While you can find many items at Lotte Mart, they are very popular in their K-beauty section with many products from Korean cosmetic brands.

Although Lotte Mart has a discount food line (similar to Emart Nobrand), it is mainly known for its expensive high-end food products. So if you’re looking for something particularly stylish, Lotte Mart is probably your best bet.
Lotte Mart’s most famous location is Seoul Station. In this branch, you will find many tourists and visitors buying unique and wonderful Korean food. If you have a passport, you can immediately claim your supermarket tax refund. It’s located right on the airport tracks, so it’s a great place to grab some Korean food before your flight!
Emart is South Korea’s largest retailer and is well known throughout the country. If you’ve been in Korea for more than a few days, you’ve probably seen or heard of this supermarket chain. If you haven’t heard of eMart, you’re probably familiar with its parent company, Shinsegae (one of the largest department stores that owns one of the largest department stores in the world today).
