Trav, in particular, spent several hours researching the preparation and installation of these two amazing fences. I’m glad he did because there were some things we wouldn’t have known otherwise and the project wouldn’t have been successful without his preparation and planning.

Depending on the size of your fence, you can shop accordingly. For two fences 6 feet high and 8 feet wide like ours, we used 22 planks, 11 yards each. Remember, 1×6 is the size of the tree right after it’s cut, but when it comes to Home Depot it’s about 5.5 inches wide.

So are you feeling inspired to make this fence? I’ll be honest, this was a huge design risk for me. I wasn’t sure if adding a fence would be dramatic or disappointing since there was already a stucco wall and greenery. Now I know! Adding another layer of texture still flows through the presence of a dimensionless hommery wall.

Kudos to Travis for being such a soldier and taking care of himself! Were it not for her patience and his hard work, that change would not have happened!

I have to say that from the beginning it has been one of my favorite things in the house. I mean, who wants to have a backyard barbecue within a meter of the car? Not exactly what I was looking for…

I thought about building a wall where the car and the bridge meet, but our house has a backdrop of woods and my husband likes the view of the plants on the porch. So he quickly dispelled that idea.

The next best idea was some sort of trellis that creates a sense of enclosure without blocking the view of the trees on the side of the yard. I actually found a medieval journal entry that had this pattern in the same situation. So I knew it would be perfect for the location and fit our mid-century theme.

There were some old hooks hanging from the roofline (maybe there were pots hanging there), and I figured I could build a trellis panel to hang from those hooks and bury the underside of the trellis in the basement for added security . it is not hanging on the hooks above).

I used Photoshop to simulate the shape, I wanted to make sure the dimensions were right, and once I got my shape I was good to go!

I knew I would need two 14-inch boards and two 11.25-inch boards to make each square, and the pieces connecting the squares would be 6 inches long. I used my template to determine how many of each plank I needed, then used the saw to cut all the pieces from the 2″ x 2″ x 8′ treated exterior planks.

When cutting different lengths of plank, it’s helpful to use the same base piece multiple times to measure each cut so the planks don’t get a little too big or a little too small each time.

As soon as I cut the parts, I put them on the machine to make sure the measurements were correct and cut as many parts as I needed.

Once everything is complete, you attach long planks to the top and bottom and cut them to match the correct width and height of the opening.

Now that all the pieces were there and my shape was complete, I used a nail gun to first connect each square and then attach all the 6 inch pieces connecting.

I also ended up putting long nails in every spot I nailed, so if you don’t have a nail gun, I actually think a nail and wood will work just fine (although the first nail is handy for holding everything together as you drive in the screws).

When the trellis is assembled, I place a heavy-duty screwdriver on the top bar of the trellis (the same place where the hooks are already installed on the roofline) and position the planter directly below the roofline so it can be buried. the bottom of the trellis into the ground when we set it up. Time to wear it!

Updating Our Old Fence On A Budget

While the trellis wasn’t necessarily something that large, it was still very delicate. So trying to pick her up seemed impossible without getting hurt. I decided the best way to do this was to put five long planks around the trellis so it would have some support when removed from the sides.

When we were able to lift it upright, we carefully made our way to the porch, set it in the hole we had dug, and attached it to the hooks that hung from above. You can bet we had a big happy dance and we didn’t stop!

We’ll probably have more people to help make sure it’s well supported, but we’re so excited we can’t wait! Patience is not my forte…

Now that the trellis was installed, it was time to paint the wood with exterior paint (a thin roller worked well for all the cracks) and fill all the joints with exterior caul.

Filling all the joints is a bit of a pain, but it made a really big difference in making the trellis look like one unit instead of a ton of little pieces, and in the long run it will help the trellis stand up to the elements.

Once all the painting and filling was done, I planted some fan palms and a Peruvian cactus in the flower bed and sat on the porch to absorb it all! The cacti should come in when it’s cold, but fan palms should be able to survive the winter here in Tennessee.

I love how this trellis turned out! It sure was a lot of work with a design like this, but it’s worth it! It’s nice to hear that we’ve now separated the machines a bit and can even train the vines to grow trellises if we want even more privacy. Thrifty!
