Extra Fine (EF / XF / X) has the smallest lines of text. This nib width is particularly popular for drawing or writing characters such as the Chinese or Japanese alphabet and captures fine detail.
Lamy Imporium Fountain Pen
Thin (F) has a thin line of text. This width is about 0.2mm thinner than the average width of the same brand. Fine is especially suitable for people with small print.
Medium (M) is the most popular foot width. Although this varies, it is usually about 0.6mm wide. This is also the standard nib width for most brands.
Wide (B) is wider than the average line of text. The writing surface of these nibs is approximately 0.8 mm wide. Wide nibs are perfect for people with large handwriting. Is it good or good? That’s the question. We are often asked about our spout widths and we totally understand your concern. After all, the most important thing about a pen is how it writes. Over the years, we have found that tip widths can vary greatly between manufacturers. Additional tips that are good for one company may fall into the good range of another. Also, different writers using the same nib may experience different results depending on how they use the pen.

It’s also great for writers who want to fit a lot of words into a small space like a weekly magazine. While it lends itself to small, precise and detailed writing, finer nibs are often chosen due to the preference of the author. They give some clarity to your text by creating a clear look and layout on the page.
All three tips tested are stainless steel rounds, so you can expect durability and consistent line width. While we’re looking for nicer gifts for the purpose of this test, it’s worth noting that all these widths are available in at least 4 tip widths, with some ranges even pointed surfaces, left hand and kid sharpeners. We decided to take an ink and stick with it to test the truth. Diamine’s blue-black ink pen is a great ink, supports most color options and is in the affordable price range for regular ink.
When it comes to paper, we no longer use anything good. We appreciate that not everyone will buy the best paper available for fountain pens. We will use standard 80gsm copy paper.
Our pressure test compares the tips under three different pressures. We’ll start with a small underpressure where the greatest weight of the pen is the weight of the pen itself, which is most of what the writer will be carrying, leaving about 5 to 10 percent of the weight on the pen. This helps you see how well the feed is delivering the ink to the nib and whether more pressure is needed to help the ink flow.

Maximum Pressure tests the tip at standard writing pressure, which our initial test showed measured between 50 and 70 grams.
Here we are looking at two things; what kind of line width you can expect from the ends and how much flexibility they have. We expect the nib tips to flex more as the pressure on the nibs increases, so a more flexible nib will give you more variety along the line.
From the rounded tips supplied by Faber-Castell, we expect consistent line widths of exactly 0.04 mm, with hardly any difference in line width between prints. You can expect to write a line between 0.86 and 0.90 mm, making the Faber-Castell thinner under heavy pressure and thicker under lighter pressure. It is without a doubt the longest tip. If you want a solid nib, this is for you.

Lamy and Kaweco showed more flexibility than Faber-Castell. The Lamy showed a width difference of 0.22mm, going from 0.81mm to 1.03mm, landing somewhere in the middle of the light to medium pressure range, but having more flexibility at extreme pressure. If flexibility is your main goal, the Kaweco nib wins, writing with a width difference of 0.25mm and producing lines from 0.76mm to 1.01mm.
So how thick is a good extra tip? This test helps us say with great confidence (a 0.03mm copy to be precise) that writing with natural pressure creates a 0.90mm line with one of the metal tips we tested here. . The difference in line width is due to nib flexibility, so if you’re looking for consistency check out Faber-Castell. Consider Lamy or Kaweco if you want your writing to be better suited to the print you’re looking for.
Our writing bot quickly became a valuable member of the team, producing consistent writing output that even an experienced writer can’t match. We use this equation to make a direct comparison between spikes. Every robot test is the same, so the only thing that makes a difference in the results is the hint.

The pressure and speed of the test are the same in all cases, so the shape and flexibility of the tip and the amount of ink supplied by the feed are the only major differences.
