How are you friends! Thank you so much for revealing our backyard remodel. The response has been overwhelming and we are really enjoying our new space… well we were before this naughty and super disrespectful heat wave hit our area and it’s been over 106 for a few weeks now. Man it would be unbearable. Needless to say, I can’t wait for it to be over so we can spend more time outside. As has been the case recently, we actually started feeling the heat even before the outdoor space was finished during one of the biggest projects of the entire renovation: painting the deck. Fortunately, I was able to finish it before the real scrawlers got here. Today I am sharing the process of how I undertook this project.

The biggest goal I wanted for our outdoor space was to make it feel like an extension of our home. I really wanted to blur the line between interior and exterior and I knew the deck stain would be a big contributing factor to the final result. As beautiful as the natural redwood was, I really didn’t want it to look like a standard wood deck. I love the warmth of our hardwood floor color on the inside of our home and was hoping to replicate that outside as well.

Because we used redwood, we had to wait several months after building before we could apply a stain or protective coating to it. This allows the wood and oil to dry well, so it will accept the stain better and give a great color. The construction was finished in February and we let it dry for 5 months before I attached it in July. If youare working with a wood such as pine or Douglas fir, you do not need to wait (if at all) before staining. Once I came up with a game plan on how to tackle the project, I ordered curbside pickup at Sherwin-Williams for stain and materials.

I used a set of brushes, rollers, metal trays, spray pumps, and Sherwin-Williams Superdeck cleaner and stain to complete the project.

As with any painting project, great results start with a clean and well-prepared surface. I started cleaning everything on the deck and sweeping it. And I gave it a good rub down. I used SuperDeck Revive Deck and Siding Brightener to clean and wash the deck. This formula is specifically for use on new or uncoated cedar, redwood or pressure treated.

I had some help with this part of the project because you have to make sure the product doesn’t dry on the wood when applying it. Naomi and I worked in small sections to wet the area and apply Superdeck Revive with a pump sprayer.

After applying it, he used a scrub brush to scrub the area. Then we let it sit for about 10 minutes and rinse it with a hose on a high pressure setting.

Once we found a groove things went pretty fast. After cleaning the entire deck, we let it dry overnight. The next morning the wood looks fresh and renewed and revitalized…. like it was brand new again!

With the deck washed and ready to stain, I made another pass with the broom and taped it to the house where the deck meets it to secure the exterior paint.

Now it was mock time. I chose Superdeck Exterior Waterborne Formula in Semi-Solid Color Stain. When choosing a stone pile, you want to consider maintenance and how often it needs to be redone. A good rule of thumb is that the darker, or more opaque, the less frequent maintenance is required. Clear coats and clear stains will require more frequent maintenance and reapplication, where semi-solid or solid stains can go longer before being reapplied. Superdeck is great because you can even apply it to wet wood.

The Superdeck stain comes in several color options and I chose the chestnut color SW 3524. I wanted a deep rich brown and this color was perfect when I tested the color sample a few months ago. I changed a small area once more just to be

The (mostly) Complete Exterior Makeover

Now listen guys….your girl was afraid to take that first brush stroke. Like super scary. We saved a long time to build the deck and the last thing I wanted to do was destroy it. This was a project that really challenged me to trust my vision and trust the process. I started rolling on the stain with a nap roller and then used a 6-inch arrow brush to gently brush back to smooth it out. Always apply with the direction of the pill.

There was a bit of a learning curve when working with the stain because it was different than any other stain I had used before. You apply it like you would paint and after letting it sit on the wood for a few minutes, just roll/brush on the paint without letting it dry. It took me a while to get the hang of it, but once I did it was smooth sailing. I was also working against the heat, so I had to be very fast. After the first day, I realized I preferred to apply the stain with just a brush, so I pulled out some of my other workhorse brushes (the Purdy is my favorite!) and used them for the duration of the project.

Please save me from myself the next time I have a crazy idea to re-stain the deck! When I told you it took forever!!! I had no idea how big the deck was until I got the stain. by hand Board by board. It is massive and took longer than I expected due to its size. Besides, I could only work on it early in the morning and later in the evening when it was below 90 degrees outside. I would recommend that you undertake a deck staining project in the fall or spring when the weather is not too hot or too cold…just make sure that there is no rain in the forecast. And don’t even get me started on brushing between everyone. Only him. board

It took a few days, but I finally made the first dress. I really wanted to take my time so I could get a nice but finished result. Slowly I could see the vision starting to come together.

The good thing about Superdeck stains in a water formula is that it ensures quick drying and reopening time. You can apply additional coats after just 4 hours, and with a semi-solid finish you’ll want to apply two thin coats for best results. Depending on the size of your project, this product allows you to finish it in one day! After applying the second coat, I let it dry overnight before moving everything back onto the deck.

After about 48 hours I did a water test to see how well the stain would hold up to moisture and it was amazing to see the water immediately bead up and turn right.

I think many people were surprised when I mentioned that I have to stain the deck because we used redwood for construction and most people leave redwood decks in their natural state. It is a fantastic quality wood with all types of decay and nature/element resistant properties. It becomes gray hot overtime if left untreated or untreated. Sure, it was pretty, but I knew I’d see it when we first did it. I am very happy with the final result. It looks beautiful and really makes the place feel like a resort vacation destination.

If youare considering taking on a deck staining project, I definitely recommend Sherwin-Williams SuperDeck products. They also come in an oil-based formula, which I will probably try the next time I have a pile of stains. I’m one of those weird people who really likes working with oil based products because I like that it gives you a little more control when applying. It dries slower than water based stains, (which can be a negative for many) but it also gives you a bit more leeway if you want to take your time and get the application really right.
