Lamy Extra Fine Nib Fountain Pen – The Lamy Safari was known as THE STARTER in the pen world, especially before the introduction of the Pilot Metropolitan. I started with a Metropolitan and recently bought a Lamy Safari because I really like the color and the ink window on the barrel so you can see the ink level in the cartridge or converter.
First impressions: The pen comes in a minimalist black Lamy box, which is not intended for storage, but for packaging when the pen is shipped. Comes with long blue Lamy ribbon but no converter. I bought a dark purple color which is a limited edition color this year. I really like the dark purple with black accents and the black wing.

Design/Features: The pen is round and the cross section is the same as the body. Its snap-on cap design makes release and attachment quick and easy. The thing about Safari that seems to make people love it or hate it is that the section is cylindrical, but there are two lines that guide your fingers, usually the thumb and index finger, to hold the pen. properly aligning the vertices to the page. Currently this only works for some people and you cannot reverse the writing (write with the pen down) with this tab. So if you hold your pen with your thumb and forefinger at the top of the section you should be fine, otherwise I’d look away. I really like the hole in the side of the barrel so you can see how much ink is left.

Hand Feel: The Dark Purple Safari has a matte finish, which I like because it increases the friction your hand holds on the pen. I don’t mind the protruding part and I think it helps me know the handle is in the right place when I’m not looking. It’s made of plastic, so it doesn’t weigh much, but it feels solid and well balanced even when carrying. The problem I have with the extra fine nib is that it’s very chippy and feels like I’m actually scraping the page as I write. It might just be the nib that came with my pen, but I’ve heard Lamy nibs touted from other reviews as well.
Writing: I chose the extra nib because I want to use it as an everyday pen. Extra fine line is very good but not Japanese fine line. However, it was initially too dry and so the ink color looked very unsatisfactory. Now with the J. Herbin Perle Niore it is very black and does not open when the pen dries, so I chose that ink. I used the SBRE Brown instructions to try to make the nose “wet” which helped but didn’t add to the nose scratching as I said in the impression. The paper that moves the most with the pen is copier/computer paper, which is to be expected, but even that is scratchy on the Rhodia. I had problems with skipping and hard starting about 20% of the time.
Clinical/Hospital Use: If I used it in the ward it would be fine. As I said before, it’s hard to get started and it jumps about 20% of the time, so it’s not something I want to carry around in the ward or clinic when I have to rely on typing. It’s a sensitive point. I like that you can see how much ink is left without removing the pen, which is a plus with things like the Metropolitan. However, twice in a week, this pen was taken out of my white coat pocket and ink spilled into the pocket. So I can’t recommend it for clinic or ward use unless you have it in your office.

Overall, I think this is an average pen. It has a blunt bow, I took it out of my pocket several times in a week and it jumped and started strong. I like the look, section mode and ink window mode. However, I cannot recommend this pen for clinic or ward because it is very unreliable and the problem is trivial.
