Mid Century Modern Renovation Before And After – There is something very satisfying about seeing a BEFORE & AFTER comparison, especially when they are taken from the same angle. After making a few houses and making the mistake of not shooting the right angle, I learned my lesson. This time, we did a better job of anticipating deeper design changes. Not represented are completed and reconfigured areas.

• From a layout point of view, we added a fourth bedroom: This room fits perfectly facing the circular street. We replicated the car port by adding a flat roof which helped with the overall mid-century modern (MCM) vibe.

• Vaulted Front Stone: We tackled this with El Dorado Ledgestone, which breaks up the wood wall and gives a little extra texture and interest to the front of the house.

• Birch tree removal: This is sad because I love this tree. The first one seems to have failed before we bought this house. The second fell when we got the house and the third had to be removed before it fell on the neighbor’s house!

• Removing vertical wood strips: I really like this, but it rotted and needed to be removed. When they come down, this 80-year-old crazy palm becomes a hero. After living with them for a while, we couldn’t protect them anymore.

• Front Door: We really want this front door out. After much consideration, not to mention votes from our bloggers, we decided on Benjamin Moore Lemon Freeze. It’s bright and slightly acidic, which contrasts sharply with the chalkiness of the exterior. Here is a blog if you want to see other options for door colors.

• Lower Port: This was one of the first things we talked about during our visit to the house. We really want to pay attention to this very low futuristic port. So we’re dealing with … get this … flexible boards. Seriously, cheap stuff that people use to make kidney shaped lawns and borders around flower boxes. It is red wood, but very thin, so it is more economical than a regular solid wood wall.

• We changed the whole way. It was a huge undertaking, not to mention the cost, but it failed miserably. We add charcoal gray to the cement mixture and give it a sandy finish. So if the road could be beautiful, this is it.

• Seating is moved from the entire aisle starting at the entrance (see right side of the “front” ceiling). Lance was determined to do it. I’m not sure if it’s worth the cost and effort. But, he was right. Removing it makes the entire entry/dining room and kitchen feel larger.

• We removed the built-in cabinet on the left and replaced it with this beautiful 60’s wooden lattice feature that used to be on the kitchen wall (see above). It was probably the single best decision we ever made. Not only did we recycle one of the home’s original custom design features, but we brightened and opened up the entire entryway.

WHAT WE DO: This kitchen is one of the darkest rooms in the house, so it’s a gut full!

•We tore out the middle cabinet and the wall separating the kitchen from the hallway and dining room.

WHAT WE DID: This was a source of contention because the walls were original mahogany panels and we didn’t want to remove them but we wanted to update them.

WHAT WE DID: It’s hard to tell from this BEFORE / AFTER, but we enlarged the bedroom by 7.5 feet, which allowed us to create an entire master suite with a walk-in closet and a beautiful master bath.
