One of the first requests we get from clients looking to update their home is for help choosing the perfect paint color. We know that there is a wide variety of options and many factors that go into why a color will or won’t work in a particular space.

Paint Colors For Small Rooms

It’s no secret, we tend to gravitate towards neutrals. We love the warmth of a perfect gray or the depth of a dark charcoal. But we equally love the subtlety of a splash of color and the boldness of a navy wall. We’ve rounded up some of our favorite paint colors from Sherwin Williams and Benjamin Moore, including a long list of other options if you’re looking to transform your space!

In this recent kitchen renovation, we used BM HC-168 Chelsea Gray on the island and SW 7017 Dorian Gray on the perimeter cabinets. Island tone with a darker color or stain adds visual interest and depth to the space!

We love the BM 2129-30 Blue Note. It’s the perfect muted blue – not too dark, not too light, just gray enough to not be too vibrant, but still stand out as a stunningly beautiful color. Here’s a tip when using dark and strong colors: make sure your room has enough natural light and keep your design accent clean and airy so the room doesn’t feel too heavy.

When we installed this herringbone ship wall for our client, we chose a medium gray color. We loved how SW 7019 Gauntlet Gray adds drama to this feature wall and how it compliments the wall color SW 7043 Worldly Gray beautifully. Another great choice, and a very similar color, is BM HC-172 Revere Pewter.

My Favorite Moody Paint Colors From Sherwin Williams

Subtle shades of blue and green are some of our go-tos when we have clients who want to add a pop of color but still want to maintain a neutral palette. This client’s women’s desk using SW 7057 Silver Strand is the perfect example of this. Its color is slightly blue, green, always tends towards gray. We also love SW 6204 Sea Salt which has even more shade.

When we helped this client design their bourbon-themed basement, we chose SW 7048 Urban Bronze for the ceiling to add drama and play to the rustic vibe they were looking for. And because we know you’re curious, we used SW 7031 Mega Greige, another personal favorite of ours, on the walls!

While we love clean, bright and white decor, there’s no denying what a dramatic accent like these bookcases can do for a space. When we renovated the client’s room, we chose SW 7674 Peppercorn to highlight the custom touches.

SW 7015 Repose Gray is probably one of the most used, sought after and best known grays in our tool kit. It’s clean, timeless and a safe choice when you want a solid neutral. It’s light and bright and helps reflect a lot of light, but also stands out well against the bright white trim.

Now that we’ve shown you some of our favorite paint colors, let’s talk about some tips to help you choose the right color and finish! When choosing a color for your space, paint a large piece of poster board and hang it up for a day or two so you can see how the color changes in different lights and at different times of day.

We strongly recommend flat or satin to all our customers in most cases. Not only do they minimize the amount of light that reflects off the wall surface, but these finishes help hide wall imperfections. For cutting, semi-gloss is generally better for durability.

If you’re having trouble deciding what works best in your space, we’re here to help with our home decor tips! Columbus Ohio is our home base, so whether it’s an in-person consultation or a virtual meeting, we can help you decide what’s best for your space. Send us an email or book a consultation online and we’ll be happy to help you choose the right color for your space!

As in the article, we believe that everyone should have a home where they feel comfortable. For example, slip into your favorite leggings and curl up on the couch in comfort. The nice kind that comes with that big sigh of relief when you can actually wind down after a long day and just be in your own space. We crave this feeling and want everyone to expect it!

Looking for the perfect dark gray for your cabinets, walls or exterior? You have come to the right blog! Today we explore the dark side of things with Sherwin William’s most popular charcoal colors. But before we get started, we need to make small talk (as usual).

Warm grays can be shades of purple or green, while cool grays can be blue, purple or green (often a mixture). If you want to know more, I recommend you read it.

And while these themes are often passive on the lighter end of things, when we get to the dark side, they don’t hide either. This means there are often fewer great “neutral” search options to choose from if you’re one who wants to see as few tones as possible.

Remember, you can’t completely avoid shades, so you should choose the one that best suits your home’s purposes!

By the way, you will find that all these colors have an LRV lower than 30. Not sure what an LRV is? It could save PAINT LOVIN’ LIFE – read all about it here.

With an LRV of 26, the Dovetail isn’t one of the darker grays, but still has great meat on its bones (or tail feathers could be more applicable).

Dovetail has passive heat and would be hard to see flashing as a traditional cool gray color. It also has some very subtle shades which you can read about in its color review.

If you ask me, a color called “Classic Gray Grey” should have a purple undertone, don’t you think? Or am I just making a weird psychic connection to something from my childhood? In each case. Sherwin Williams Classic French Gray has a very subtle green undertone (slightly blue-green in some lights). However, it is so passive that I consider it one of the more neutral colors of the dark gray color, knowing that all grays actually have shades.

Comfort Gray, A Sherwin Williams Green Paint Color

If you’re a fan of the dark side of things, welcome to the club. Not only do I have the lovely Urban Bronze at home, but I also have Pewter Roycroft – and not just for the inside, but the outside too!

When we bought our house, it wasn’t bad… just not good (look how the sun turned our almond-shaped windows a subtle yellow-green shade…

Then with a little KLC, Roycroft Pewter plays on the teal tones in the K2 slab and gives our home a lot more presence…

Roycroft Pewter has a bit more undertones than the medium dark gray, but it doesn’t get into the colorful end of things. It suits a blue tone, but soaks his pedicured feet well in green. With an LRV of 13, Roycroft Pewter is definitely on the dark side significantly.

No doubt you’ll be going out in the near future and picking up color samples – hang on! I want you to check SAMPLIZE. Samplize offers peel and stick samples at a cheaper, easier and more environmentally friendly price than traditional paint cans. Here are a few reasons why I recommend Samplize to my clients…

Give me some grizzle! Sorry, I just channeled my inner gangster. Grizzle Gray has an LRV of 13 which means it has decent meat on its bones but will never look black. And if you ask me, while Benjamin Moore Amherst Gray is known for its green tone, Grizzle Gray calls it SHAME with a more intense green and a slightly cooler attitude.

I ran the gauntlet with this gray. However, even with an LRV of 17, Gauntlet Gray isn’t the darkest charcoal gray, but it certainly has solid depth.

In the next photo, the gray gloves have a subtle purple tone showing through. And while this is one of the nuances of the Gauntlet, it’s usually not that obvious…

When it comes to undertones, Westchester Gray’s subtle approach is hard to beat. That’s not to say it’s completely neutral, but it’s not as committed as some
