Open Concept Living And Dining Room – Want to know how to design and plan an open plan dining room set so that it flows and functions well? I have all the tips you need to set up your open plan space in your home.
Most of us have open plan living and dining rooms. They are par for the course in modern homes. But many times I see mistakes made, with many design clients that I don’t know how to fix.
Open Concept Living And Dining Room
These errors are often visual and stylistic errors (such as wrong color, pattern, or shape of furniture). But there are also some open-plan functional issues that make your living and dining rooms more difficult to use on a daily basis.

If you are shaking your head at most of what I said, this post will solve your problem. Below I’m sharing all my open plan living room and dining room design tips, furniture tips and planning tips to make areas of your home more interesting.
As I walked into the very open plan living and dining room, I felt like a kid at a school disco. You know, all the boys on one side and all the girls on the other with a big gap in between?
People often feel compelled to push the sofa against the wall when they don’t have to. Give them some breathing room, especially if the space in question is large. Pulling it 10 to 20 cm away from the wall creates a feeling of more space and airiness, making the area more welcoming.
This is especially important when it comes to sofas and windows. If your space is big enough, leave a space of 60 cm between the sofa and the window. People often worry about cutting furniture from windows. But if you give it a bigger gap, it will feel more deliberate and precise.
Small Dining Room Ideas To Make The Most Out Of Your Space
I’ve seen dining tables lean against the wall a lot, because people feel like they need a large walkway next to them to get to other areas of the house. If you see one it’s a new open plan layout error.
Ideally, in any room, you want to create a path. You can place furniture in the middle of the space for significant direct traffic. It tells you (and other people in the house) how to move in and around the space. With this in mind, it’s perfectly acceptable (and the best layout choice, actually) to have a dining table in the middle of the room with a walkway around it.
You want to be able to move around your desk completely from all sides. If this is impossible, it is usually because the table is too big for the room. If so, I’d say it’s better to admit your mistake and buy a smaller table. Let it take its rightful place in the dining room with room to pull out the chairs.

Here we are talking about the ideal scenario regarding the best open plan dining room layout in the living room. Each of us has our own place to be equipped with our own challenges. But if you can use this rule, it’s a good idea to follow.
The dream is to be able to sit on your couch and talk to someone sitting at the dining table (or in the kitchen). You want to orient the sofa in a way that it doesn’t completely extend into the room, so people in the kitchen and dining area will look behind you.
It is better to place a sectional sofa on two walls behind it, then an armchair opposite it, behind it in the dining room and kitchen. It also keeps the path to the living room open, instead of a long sofa blocking you from entering the space.
I realize that it is not always possible to follow the three rules above, in an open plan living room with a sofa against the wall, facing the dining room and kitchen. If you are in this situation, there are several solutions.
Are We Done With Open Concept Layouts? Is Privacy Now The Top Priority??
If you need to put the sofa behind it in another room (essentially separating the room, so to speak), it is important that the back of the sofa is low. This ensures that the space feels and can be as airy and open as it can be.
This means that a high-backed chair is a no-go, unless you can find another wall to put it in the room. Large and thin sectional sofas are also not available. I promise that the style of the furniture and its high back will make your room a thousand times smaller, so avoid it if you can.
While we’re on the subject, this post has a cool, modern-looking chair if you’re looking for a spot.
The very open plan living and dining room feels like one huge hall. Nothing but sofas and a dining table indicate that one area is dedicated to relaxation and the other to dining. This is because the two fields are not at any base. There is no such thing as “this is one room, there is another room”.

This does not mean that you want to insulate the room. After all, the whole point of open spaces is so you can move seamlessly from one to the next. But you want to give them their own anchor.
A rug is the easiest way to do this in the living room. It will keep clear boundaries around parts of the room to define it as its own area. Depending on the size of your open plan living room and dining room, you may also want to place a rug under the dining table.
Be careful in small spaces where your living room rug is about a meter away from your dining table. In this case, rug the living room and skip the dining room all together.
In a small home, you may not have the space to lay a wide rug for your open-plan living and dining room area. Or, as one reader points out in the comments below, mobility issues mean the mat can pose a trip hazard. If I can always say that the rug in the living room is important. But pendant lights work too.
The Advantages Of An Open Concept Floor Plan
Pulling your dining table away from the wall and installing a pendant light above it is impressive for several reasons. First, it gives you the necessary leeway around the table, but it also prevents him from apologizing. The pendant light above the table is a real design statement. And he demands his rightful place!
I wouldn’t suggest hanging it above the dining table and in the living room unless the open space is very large. In most cases, the dining room and living room rugs and pendant lights in both spaces will feel appropriately personalized and grounded.
The open plan living and dining room are like siblings sitting next to each other. If the stove is thrown away, it is like three children of the same family. They look a bit alike, but they are not twins.
This is how you should approach furniture and decor in your open plan area. You need objects in each room to talk to each other, but don’t feel forced.
How To Decorate And Create Spaces In An Open Floor Plan
For example, a leather dining chair will match the leather cushions on your sofa. You can have armchairs in your living room in the colors shown in the artwork for your dining room. Or maybe it’s a pendant light above your dining table, some brass moments captured on the legs of a coffee table in the nearby living room.
I’m sure you get the idea here. You want small elements in the two areas to be in the same color or material, so that the open plan living room and dining room look cohesive and connected.
Of course, things can easily take a turn for the worse. And I mean the furniture is very adjustable. You have to be careful with colors and materials here.
The last thing you want to do in an open plan dining room is to get a whole bunch of furniture from one store that all match perfectly. Gone are the days of all-inclusive events: you heard them here first.
Open Plan Living Room Ideas
If you have a dining table, dining chairs, coffee table, side table, sideboard and entertainment unit all in the same material, it creates a great visual load. You need more variety in your colors and materials. The rooms should be logically next to each other but the furniture should not all come from the same range.
Instead, think about the overall interior design style you want for the room, and choose furniture from a variety of stores.
We knew we wanted a variety of colors and materials in the furniture for our open plan living and dining room. But the size of the furniture is also important.
