Everyone has a pen or two that they feel nostalgic about, right? Something you used in previous days

1) is there such a thing as a “pen man” and 2) are you one of them? You then. For me it’s Pilot’s The Better Retractable with a good point.

Long before I discovered the Pilot V5 Precision, I had easy access to this stylish 80’s looking retractable pen. I’m really not sure when these pens started disappearing from the shelves. I don’t think I even bought any of these pens. They have always been lying down, just like the Pilot G2 is today. I’m not sure if I’m right, but something tells me this is a very popular bulk order for large offices. And like the G2, it’s above average in the category.
At the end of the day, this is still a ballpoint pen, so it doesn’t replace any of my favorite gel ink or hybrid pens, and certainly not any fountain pen. I definitely prefer this pen to the standard Bic ballpoint pen. And depending on how you feel about Bic ballpoint pens, that means a lot.
The line of this ball is really sharp. The ink can sometimes create a messy line, but the feel is always smooth. In fact, it’s so smooth I hate typing on it. Strange, isn’t it? After using a few pens, I think I’ve narrowed down the reasons why I don’t like using pens. It’s the combination of a thin barrel/content with an ultra-smooth typing experience that makes it difficult for me to use. I had trouble controlling the pen and keeping my grip loose enough without cramping.

However, this is not a completely fair assessment. I use high quality glossy paper. This pen may not be designed for this type of media. This pen is probably used to write on the kind of paper stocked by a large office: cheap and nasty.
In summary, this nib sits somewhere between a standard Bic and the new Jetstream pen. It’s as smooth as a Jetstream but as jerky as a Bic.
Now, the design and look of the pen always appeals to me. I love the look of this pen. There are no unnecessary curves or ridges to make it look elegant or sexy – it’s just a straight stem with a pointed tip to hold the stuffing. It has a knurled handle and a nice click mechanism. The clip is really sturdy and the clear case makes it easy to see what color you have (that and the color cylinder holds the snap mechanism).

It looks different than any other pen I’m used to seeing, and that’s what makes it attractive to me. When I discovered much better pens (first the Precision V5 and then the near-perfect Signo 207), I forgot about the Pilot Better Retractable. Once I saw some pictures online of Better Retractable and had to look them up so I could try them again with a new perspective. Fortunately, Amazon still carries them.
I’m glad I was able to track it down and find a pen I’ve always liked, but it’s also fun to try something after you’ve developed your taste and knowledge only to realize you don’t like the old one anymore. It’s a great ballpoint pen, but there are many options that work better.
