Sailor Fude Nib Fountain Pen – This fude de mannen füllfieder zu sefuerer was originally made for calligraphy, but has also become popular for other purposes such as sketching and journaling. Because of its angle (55º), the thickness of the line changes as you move the pen.

The pen comes with two Sailor cartridges and is also compatible with the Sailor converter and ink bottles available in our online store.

This is the first brand that most people think of when they think of luxury Japanese fountain pens. Their premium fountain pens top Montblanc, Pelican… and to top it all off, their in-house nibmeisters produce some of the most beautiful and unique pens in the world!

Of course, their premium pens come at a premium price! Specialty pens in particular can add hundreds of dollars to the price of your pen. Well, that’s where the Sailor 1911 Fude de Mannen comes in! This is basically a cut down version of the Sailor 1911 fountain pen with a special steel nib and at a particularly interesting price!

Design-wise it is – as I said – similar to the regular 1911 and 1911 large. But the difference in price is reflected in the build quality and details. For example, their more expensive pans used unusual plastic instead of the more “luxury” cast resin. The trim is also less detailed, with the cap band reduced to just one ring and less detailed engraving on it. Gone are the decorative rings around the clip and on the back of the barrel.

It won’t win any beauty contests, but it gets the job done and from a distance looks more expensive than it actually is. The construction is not as precise, there are still some seams visible on the plastic, and the capsule does not lie exactly flat. In addition, it is a very sturdy pen, but still very light due to the plastic construction.

It is dimensionally similar to the more expensive Classic 1911 (not the larger 1911). It measures 13.5 cm closed (5.25 inches) and 11.5 cm open (4.5 inches). It’s a small pen for my taste, I use it more often than advertised as it gives more nib control. It sits comfortably at about 14.5 cm (5.75 inches) and the head weight is not light. In fact, the entire nib is quite light. The injection molded plastic is obviously not as thick as the resin on more expensive gliders, which takes away from the quality feel. I know it’s unfair to compare the Fued to a pen ten times its price, but you know: you don’t buy a pen for looks and feel!

Which brings me directly to the reason why you really want to buy this pen: the pen of course!

Sailor Fude Nib Fountain Pen

Aesthetically, it’s a really weird thing. It’s a fairly flat piece of gold-plated steel with less of the curved profile you find on most other pens (although the Gold Sailor pens are a bit flatter than other brands’ pens!) The teeth, instead of being nice and straight, bend under 2mm from the tip an angle of 60°. This is the ‘food’ part in the pseudonym. Fudge refers to a brush-like drawing medium, and you’ll usually find brush tip markers labeled Fudge. This tip actually creates the effect of a food brush pen and gives bold, bold strokes. Useful for example when writing Japanese “kanji” characters, but it’s just plain fun to play.

Twsbi With Fude Nib….

Depending on the angle at which you hold the pen, they range from very fine when you hold the pen at a 90° angle to 2mm wide when you hold it at a 60° angle. As for moves, there are many types of punches that can be created. This is a fun pen to experiment with. If I were a little skilled in calligraphy or drawing, I’m sure that would also give good effects. This is one of those ‘fun but impractical’ pens, if you’re looking for an EDC writer and nothing else, you need to look elsewhere.

Given the unusual shape of the nib, I expected it to have some problems right after construction. But in reality, this is a very good artist! It is a well-tuned wet-flow pen, as I used it with wet ink (Iroshizuku Yama-budo). It is quite responsive, mainly due to the fact that you are placing a bent piece of metal on top of the paper. So far it hasn’t quit or caused any problems and it starts up fine, even after a few days of not using it!

Raise your hand if you like to talk with pencil and ink, and if you like to print or draw with a pen… If you just raise your hand in the air, yes, this is what you need to buy. The reason can be a feather! The Sailor Fude is sort of the equivalent of the ever-popular Pilot Parallel Pen: it’s a powerful tool in the right hands, but also good fun for people like me who have zero artistic skills. 1911 Food costs about €31 (for non-EU residents: $28 ex VAT at The PenCompany!), all things considered.

This review does not contain any affiliate links. Fude fountain pens are named after the traditional Japanese fude brushes used for calligraphy and allow drawing with variable line widths. The amount of pressure on the brush determines the width of the line.

With a fountain pen, the variability comes from bending the nib and the user changes the nib angle. Visualize the tip of the tip as a triangle. If you hold the pen vertically, only the tip of the triangle contacts the page, resulting in a very thin line. Lowering your wrist lowers the angle of the pen, and then you write with the base of the triangle, resulting in a wider line. You can also flip the pen over to instantly create an extra thin line. These variable lines add character to your work.

Sailor makes a range of fudge fountains with 55 or 40 degree tip bends. The green food nib used by many sketchers has a 55 degree bend. This model allows you to create more variations in line width, but is a bit more difficult to use. You have to go slowly so the ink doesn’t run, and find a good rhythm with your wrist movements to keep the nib in contact with the page.

The pink/white/brown/blue pens are all 40 degree pens. With less tip flex comes less line change. On the plus side, the ink flow is more consistent and smoother turns are easier to manipulate, especially when writing. If you’re new to food grade fountain pens, this pen is definitely one to try first.

So why use these pans? These pens are fountain pens that can be filled with any fountain pen ink. They are most often used with de atramentis document ink (you need to buy a marine converter for this). The document ink is waterproof, so you can use it with watercolors without fear of losing the sketch. Changing the line width is a huge advantage in sketching, as you can make many different marks with one tool.

A quick note about kakimores. This is a new type of dip pen that works as a feeding pen. If you place the kakimori pen vertically, you get a thin line, but if you lower the angle of the pen, the line becomes wider. It is available in steel or brass. Read more about kakimores here. A few days before I left for the Atlanta Pen Show, the amazing Joey Feldman sent me two Cellar Food de Mannen fountain pens to try out. I had, I had
