If you’ve been around for a while you know I’m a big fan of white interior wall paint. While we were in our old house, we started going over the walls because somewhere along the way I noticed that our art and decorations were sticking out of the white walls behind them.

So when we moved into our new house and decided to do all the painting before moving in, it was easy to decide that we wanted all white walls, at least to start. Choosing paint colors before moving into the house can be difficult, although I think we will eventually paint a room or two in a different color, white seemed like the best way to start each room.

But then the big question is “What color should we use for a white wall?” Our choice was a bit difficult because we wanted to work with the existing trim color (Divine White by Sherwin-Williams). Divine White isn’t really white (it’s more beige). So we wanted to choose a white color for our walls, which will emphasize the trim as a contrasting color.

White interior trim colors are all the rage right now and I wanted to try it because 1) I think it’s beautiful and 2) it would save us a lot of money if we avoided painting all our trim and doors.

So we tried a few different whites on our basket and narrowed our choices down to Sherwin-Williams Alabaster and Sherwin-Williams Pure White. Pure White came out the winner and we love it. Read on to learn more about this beautiful white wall color!

White White is Sherwin-Williams’ most popular white color for a reason. If you’ve read the Sherwin-Williams Alabaster paint review, you might be surprised that I didn’t choose it for our current home. Honestly, I was surprised! I repeated to my husband that I feel Alabaster is the best choice. But we sample alabaster and white based on the color of our particles and alabaster looks yellow. That’s when I realized what white white is. It’s a crisp white that’s a bit cooler than Alabaster and still feels welcoming and soft.

White at Sherwin-Williams is not quite clear (more on that later). But it’s still soft and fluffy to feel inviting without being cold or frigid. It is still considered a warm white, but I did not notice any yellowish white, which I can sometimes see in alabaster.

In the photos below you can see samples of alabaster (above) and white (below) taken from different areas we tested in our home. Although not significantly different, you can see how Alabaster is a little warmer / more yellow than SW Pure White, which reads as a neutral. You can also see how the two whites differ depending on the light.

If you have never heard of the reduction of the theme before, I talk about it in this detailed article on how to choose colors for your home. The short version is that the undertones are the parts of the color that you don’t actually “see”.

“Is Sherwin Williams a warm or cool white?” Have you ever wondered? You will be really surprised about the content.

White tones are almost non-existent, although the formula has a slight yellow and black. Yellow gives it a little warmth that makes whites feel unhealthy. Don’t get me wrong, white is far from white (in my opinion, white walls are terrible). And gray tones will balance them and make them not look yellow. I think the black/gray touch is what separates White from Sherwin Williams Alabaster.

But what does it mean, for example, when you see white on the wall? What you see is a bright white, timeless and rich, and more eye-catching than Builder’s Basic or Sherwin Williams Extra White.

Something people often don’t consider when choosing paint colors is the color’s light reflectance value (LRV). The LRV of pure white is 84, the LRV of pure white is 100. In other words, the LRV of white is much higher. This means that it reflects more light into the room. This makes it a good choice for any room where you want it to feel bright and airy.

Below you can see what the white pipe looks like in our bonus room, which is a north facing room. A room that faces north is the closest you will see true white because of how natural light hits it.

Our guest bedroom is also a north facing bedroom. But remember that the photos look a little different depending on when they were taken and the angle from which they were taken. Kind of crazy, right?! That’s why it’s important to follow my tips on choosing colors for your home before making any decisions!

In the rooms facing south, it seems to have constant light throughout the day. Pure white can reflect the heat in a south-facing room. It’s certainly true for my south-facing home office. But still, The White House is not a hot read in my office.

Our kitchen is an interior room that receives indirect light from the south. Having a little bit of natural light makes the great value of off-white light reflection (more on that in a moment) very important in this space, especially given the black cabinets I painted myself with this painting technique. Easy DIY.

Choosing The Right White Paint

Wondering how Sherwin-Williams Pure White compares to some of the more popular wall and trim colors? You’re covered!

Note: I took the photos below on the brightest white surface I could find to give an accurate color representation. But remember, the colors you see will vary depending on the screen settings of the device you are viewing this post on. Another reason why it’s so important to test paint colors for your home before choosing one!

A more neutral white than SW Alabaster and weaker SW Extra White you see what I mean. When you look at the white next to the bright white printed paper where I drew the colored ships, you can see that it is much less “true white”.

A Greek Villa is definitely hotter than the White House. The ski on the other hand is more gray than white and a little brighter.

Sherwin Williams 7005 Pure White

You can easily see what I mean by this white white, it is still a beautiful, soft-white and more “real” white. You can see that pure white is very soft compared to high definition white. It has a great blue-white undertone that makes it a cool and very difficult color to use indoors (in my opinion).

Benjamin Moore White Dove is very similar to white, but still warm. I would say Benjamin Moore White Dove sits between Alabaster and White Dove in terms of warmth.

Benjamin Moore Swiss Coffee has a yellow tint compared to Sherwin-Williams Pure White. Swiss coffee is slightly warmer than SW Alabaster. Pure white also has a slightly higher LRV of 84 than Swiss coffee at 81.90. You can read my full review of Benjamin Moore Swiss Coffee (thief beware, it’s my favorite of the most popular white paint colors).

If you are looking for a neutral white color, I would definitely consider white! With the LRV above, it makes the room light and airy, which is what many people (including me) are looking for. It is a versatile color that is a great choice for everything from the living room to the bathroom. It is actually a neutral white with no noticeable undertones and the touch of black in the formula prevents it from feeling cold or heavy. I do not regret choosing it for our wall!

Pure white is a great choice for living rooms, family rooms, bathrooms, bedrooms, walls, decorations, ceilings and even cabinets. It truly is one of the most versatile white paint colors out there. SW Pure White has no visible white color, so it looks beautiful
