Until early 2003, most exterior painters used SW Super Paint, the best offering at the time. Since 2004, Duration was introduced, and painters anticipated its promised performance improvements.
The Sherwin-Williams Duration exterior was marketed on the basis of significant improvements and exceeded all requirements in every way. However, some painters felt that its thickness and faster drying time were a disadvantage of the application. Painters had to be faster and more accurate with the first iteration of duration. Some have had problems using this product in direct sunlight or temperatures above 90 degrees.
Many painters are currently scrutinizing duration because it is “difficult to work with”. But in our experience, these statements usually come from painters who don’t understand what Duration is or how to use it correctly.

As it retains its value as a thicker coating, it contains high levels of surfactants in the paint, which is attributed to its ease of application. Although these additives facilitate brushing, the high concentration of color additives introduces other application limitations.
Surfactant leaching can occur when a freshly painted surface is exposed to moisture, humidity, or cold temperatures before the additives in the paint disappear (also known as “curing”.) Surfactant leaching under these conditions affects durability, which worsens when darker colors are used.
Although rinsing off the surfactant does not adversely affect the paint itself, it leaves unsightly white streaks or circles that appear as watermarks.

The duration is longer, but the SW Latitude is more versatile when shooting with rain or humidity in the forecast. Whether it is rain, humidity or soil moisture, all exterior paint is subject to all weather conditions and it is difficult to predict or plan for such conditions.
When it comes time to clean the brushes, Duration exterior can be a problem, but it provides better surface adhesion than any other SW exterior latex acrylic house paint.

But don’t let the numbers fool you. While the lower solids percentage may seem like a disadvantage, Duration compensates for the lack of solids by increasing the total surface area of the solids with its thicker application.
As a result of being thick, it also covers less square footage in the 200-300 sqft per gallon range. In our experience, these numbers are reduced by 30% on heavily textured surfaces.
Application on wet mil ranges from 5 – 7 mil thickness which is outstanding. But the dry film thickness of 2.1 – 2.7 is less than impressive. Therefore, we recommend two coats of paint for ultimate durability.

Self-priming refers to the paint’s ability to cover and adhere to previously painted surfaces. Zinsser primers are among the best for bonding exterior paint to untreated wood.
Because brick and concrete are porous surfaces that tend to absorb water, it is important that whatever paint is used allows for the transfer and dispersion of moisture.
The duration allows moisture transfer, but at a slower rate. For this reason, we generally do not recommend it for painting brick houses, although it can be used on highly textured brick surfaces. On the other hand, if you use Duration on a brick with a smooth surface, the paint will peel off.
