Sherwin Williams Emerald Urethane Enamel – From bathroom cabinets to kitchen cabinets and everything in between, we’ve painted your fair share of cabinets. Here are the products and frequently asked questions we get about painting cabinets with a brush and roller.
As we’ve covered in many DIY projects, paint is honestly one of the cheapest ways to update your home and closets.

We understand that professional painters have different opinions about paint etc. However, we tend to stick with latex based products because we are self-painting friends and this method has worked for us for years.

Choose the right primer, so we recommend using latex enamel paint on cabinets. If the cabinets are already painted, you can most likely skip the priming step. In our kitchen island painting post, we cover everything about repainting cabinets.
Choosing the right paint is probably one of the most important things. I also think that choosing the right primer may be more important when considering painting the cabinets in your home.
Reformulated Emerald Urethane
I’ve read post after post from others saying you don’t need to set up a cache. I honestly feel ours has stood the test of time because of the primer. Don’t miss this step!!
Don’t let the price scare you. Be sure to buy this paint while it’s on a 30% discount, which Sherwin Williams regularly offers. They are usually 40% off throughout the year.
In the past, we always used latex enamel paint when painting cabinets. I am a huge fan of the Sherwin Williams ProClassic series.
How To Choose Paint Colors For Your Home
However, after using Sherwin’s newer Emerald Urtherane Trim Enamel paint, I will never use another paint for cabinets.
The only downside is that the wardrobe is touchable for a few days. But if we can survive with small children and not destroy closets, so can you!
If you want to paint your kitchen furniture like nothing or it smells bad, a Kilz primer, Bin Shellac or other oil-based primer is a good choice.
Bayberry Kitchen Finishes: Paint, Hardware, And Trim
Professional painters say you need an oil-based primer to stop tannins from the wood or natural bleeding. Even if you use an oil-based foundation, it must be able to handle odors and dirt.
Our favorite primer used to be Sherwin Williams Multi-Purpose Latex-Based Primer because of the ease of use.
Since they are water-based, some colors may fade over time. We painted our oak kitchen cabinets over 7 years ago and they only had one stubborn door showing some discoloration. We just added another coat of paint.
Fuck The Emerald Trim Urethane Enamel, Why Don’t We Use Interior Emerald For The Exterior Of Our Door?” 😂
Latex enamel paint offers the benefits of enamel paint, such as a harder surface, without the harmful environmental concerns of oil-based enamel paint.
Latex enamel paint can be cleaned with soap and water. Mixing latex with oil paint creates a latex enamel paint hybrid that dries faster than traditional oil-based enamels.
We love the look of our kitchen island with Sherwin Williams emerald urethane enamel paint (don’t worry, it contains latex for easy cleanup).
Diy Cabinet Painting Tips
According to the SW website, “It is an indoor/outdoor water-based alkyd, modified urethane that has the look and feel of an alkyd/oil coating.” Translated, it looks like oil-based paint, but has the advantage of being latex-based.

Sherwin Williams Emerald Paint is expensive (especially if you’re not shopping for a sale). I also don’t mind the charcoal blue Behr Latex Enamel we used to paint our bathroom cabinets and rails.

For some reason, however, the high-touch areas of our fence seem to take on a strange texture that we haven’t seen anywhere with Sherwin Williams paint.
So I will most likely stick with SW latex enamel or Benjamin Moore’s equivalent. I’m glad I tried the cheaper brand because it’s thinner and drips easier.
We painted the bathroom cabinets in the kids’ bathroom and they still look amazing (even bad kids can give cabinets).

However, our fence is a little more worn and has a few spots that look like they’ve been rubbed off several times by a vacuum cord.
In the near future I will probably repaint the painted wood with a high end latex enamel paint.
Behr paint is also thinner than Sherwin Williams paint. A 3rd coat of paint is definitely needed.
What Is Sherwin Williams Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel?
I don’t recommend this paint for big projects, but it’s perfect for our smaller projects (you can see how we used this charcoal blue color).
We’ve seen other DIY bloggers use Deco Satin Paint and/or oil-based enamel. And if you don’t want to paint but still want to simplify your closet, check out our gel shower cabinets.
Here you can see that we used Samplize’s peel and stick paint samples to test different island colors. The good thing is that they are large and available in various paint brands such as Sherwin Williams. You can read our full review of Samplize here.
My Review Of Sherwin Williams Pro Industrial Water Based Alkyd Urethane Enamel
We always use semi-gloss materials. For the same reason you don’t want to use chalk paint, you don’t want matte or even eggshell paint.
However, I was at Sherwin Williams recently and it seems that satin is the most common upholstery for cabinets, especially kitchen cabinets.
Many people like semi-gloss for finishes and satin for cabinets. However, we always use semi-gloss latex enamel paint on our kitchen cabinets and bathroom cabinets. And let me tell you, the cabinets are easy to clean.

Guess??? Some parts of our kitchen have been completely repainted. The painted backsplash and all the lower cabinets are a bold color. You should see how it looks now!
Go to a local paint store (not a big box store) and ask for a sample of a different finish. Even though it is small, you can see different colors or trees with different finishes.

If you have the right settings and are confident in your spray paint (we just bought this paint to try), then a spray box can be a great way to achieve the smoothest possible finish. We see the disadvantages of spraying because it is difficult to control overspray.
If you are setting up an insert station and can spray doors and drawers, this is something to consider. I’m always happy with a good brush and a small roller.
The synthetic 2.5” square brush is a good choice for painting cabinets with latex enamel paint. Some people like this square brush with short handles for cabinet painting.
The Quality Paint We Use
With a small foam roller you can easily control the amount of paint that is applied and leave a smooth surface when painting cabinets.

Roughen the wood a bit with fine sandpaper 220. We like to use a sanding block and only use the grain. You don’t have to do too much here. You’re just trying to give the foundation a little ‘texture’.
5. Use a brush in the folds of the cabinet, then apply the primer with a small foam roller. Make sure there are no drips.
8. Replace the hinges and add hardware if desired. Wait as long as possible before doing this. You want the painted cabinets to dry completely. We even waited a whole week for our kitchen island. You can even spray paint hinges for a fresh look.

Latex enamel in the closet? Impossible. Too soft and stays sticky for a long time. The object will stick to the paint for weeks after the latex enamel dries.
