If you intend to paint kitchen cabinets when they are outside or smelly, Killz Primer, Bin Shellac, or other oil-based primers are not good choices.

Professional painters say you need an oil-based primer to stop the tannin or natural bleeding that occurs from the wood. You should be able to handle the smell and mess even if you use an oil-based primer.
Our favorite primer from Sherwin Williams is used as a multi-purpose latex-based primer.
Since it is water-based, you may experience some color bleeding over time. We painted our oak kitchen cabinets 7 years ago and there is only one stubborn door where you can see some discoloration. We just added another coat of paint.

Latex enamel paint gives you the benefits of enamel paint, such as a rough finish, without the environmental concerns of oil-based enamel paint.
Latex enamel paint can also be cleaned with soap and water. Rubber is mixed with latex rubber to create a hybrid of latex enamels that dry faster than traditional oil-based enamels.
We love how our kitchen cabinet island turned out, repainted with Sherwin Williams Emerald urethane enamel paint (don’t worry, it’s mixed with latex for easy cleanup).

According to SW’s site, “It’s an interior/exterior urethane modified water-based alkyd finish with the look and feel of an alkyd/oil finish.” Translated, it looks like an oil-based paint, but being latex-based has advantages.

Sherwin Williams Emerald paint is expensive (especially if you don’t buy it). I also forgot the Behr latex enamel in Charcoal Blue that we used to paint the bathroom cabinets and rails.

However, for some reason the top touch area of our fence seems to get a strange texture that is not present in any of the areas that use the Sherwin Williams paint.
So I mostly stick to SW latex enamel or Benjamin Moore equivalent. I’m glad I tried the cheaper brand because it was a bit runny and dripped easily.
Our painted bathroom cabinet is in our kid’s bathroom and still looks great (the cabinet can even be a gift from a toddler).

However, our fence is quite durable and has a few spots that look worn from the vacuum cable repeatedly rubbing against the edges.
In the future I think I will repaint the wood that was painted with a high end latex enamel paint.
Behr’s paint is also thinner than its Sherwin Williams counterparts. The third coat of paint is absolutely necessary.

We always use semi-gloss. For the same reason you don’t want to use chalk paint, you also don’t want to use matte or eggshell paint.
However, I was at Sherwin Williams recently and satin is the most common finish for cabinets, especially kitchen cabinets.
Most people prefer to use semi-gloss for trim and satin for cabinets. However, we always use semi-gloss latex enamel paint on kitchen cabinets and bathroom cabinets. And know that the cabinets are easy to clean.

If you have the right setup and are confident with your paint sprayer (we recently bought one to try out), then spraying your cabinets is a great way to get a smooth finish. We see the disadvantage of overdispersion because it is difficult to control overdispersion.
If you are creating a docking station and can spray paint the doors and drawers, this is something to consider. I’ve always had great luck with a good brush and a small roller.
