Hello friends! Thank you for your great love for decorating our yard. The response has been overwhelming and we’ve really enjoyed our new space… well, we’ve enjoyed before this extremely unseasonable heat hit our area and had 106+ temperatures for two weeks. It’s unbearable there. Needless to say, I can’t wait for this to be over so we can spend more time outside again. As hot as it has been lately, we really felt the heat before the exterior was even finished, during one of the biggest projects of the entire refurbishment: painting the deck. Fortunately, I managed to do this before the real fires started. Today I will tell you how I approached this project.

The biggest goal I wanted for our outdoor space was to make it feel like an extension of the inside of our house. I really wanted to blur the lines between indoor and outdoor and I knew painting the deck would go a long way towards achieving that end result. As beautiful as natural mahogany is, I really didn’t want it to look or feel like a standard wood deck. I love the warmth of the color of our wood floors inside our home and was hoping to replicate it on the outside.

Latex Vs. Oil Exterior Stain

Because we used mahogany, we had to wait several months after construction to paint or protect it. This allows the wood and oils to dry well, allowing the stain to absorb better and produce a great color. Construction was completed in February and we let it dry for 5 months before I painted it in July. If you’re working with woods like pine or Douglas fir, you won’t have to wait long (if at all) for staining. After I had a plan for how to approach the project, I ordered Sherwin-Williams to remove the stain and material from the siding.

To complete the project, I used a brush, roller, metal bowl, spray pump, and a Sherwin-Williams SuperDeck Cleaner and Stain kit.

As with any painting project, great results start with a clean, carefully prepared surface. I started cleaning and clearing everything from the deck. Then I gave her a good scrub. I used SuperDeck Revive Deck and Siding Brightener to clean and wash the deck. This formula is specifically designed for use on new, red or pressure treated cedar wood.

I got a little help with this part of the project because you have to make sure the product doesn’t dry out on the wood when you apply it. Naomi and I worked in small areas, wetting the area and applying SuperDeck Revive with a pump.

After applying, she used a scented brush to clean the area. Then leave for about 10 minutes and rinse with a high pressure hose.

Once we got the groove, it went pretty fast. After cleaning the entire area, dry it overnight. The next morning, the wood looked fresh, refreshed and revitalized… like it was new again!

After washing the deck and prepping it for painting, I went over it again with a broom and taped it along the length of the house where the deck joins to protect the exterior paint.

Now it’s time to draw. I chose the SuperDeck Exterior water-based formula in a translucent color. When choosing a deck stain, you need to consider maintenance and how often you will need to reapply it. A good rule of thumb is that the darker or more opaque the transparency, the lower the retention. Clear coats and translucent stains require more maintenance and reapplication, while semi-hard or hard stains may last longer before reapplication is required. SuperDeck is great because it can even be applied to damp wood.

How To Pick Deck Stain Colors To Transform Your Outdoor Living Space

SuperDeck stain comes in a variety of colors and I chose Chestnut SW 3524. I wanted a deep rich brown and this was the perfect color when I tested the color swatches a few months ago. I have another small area for him

Now listen, friends… your daughter is terrified of the first smear. What a fear. We saved a lot to build our deck, and the last thing I wanted to do was ruin it. It was a project that made me believe in my vision and process. I started by rolling the stain with a short roller and then brushing it gently with a 6-inch brush. Always use in the direction of the fibers.

It took a bit of learning to work with this dye because it was different from any other dye I had used before. You apply it like a paint and just leave it on for a few minutes and then apply the product without removing the paint. It took a while to get used to, but once I did, it worked flawlessly. I was also working against the heat, so I had to move really fast. After the first day, I found I preferred to just apply the stain with a brush, so I took some of my other work brushes (Purdy for me!) and used them throughout the project.

Next time I have this crazy idea to color my deck again, please save me from myself! It took forever if I told you!!! I had no idea how big the deck was until I had to paint it. hand. board to board. It is huge and took longer than I expected just because of its size. In addition, I could work on it for short periods in the early morning and later when the temperature outside was below 30 degrees. I suggest you paint your deck in the fall or spring when the weather isn’t too hot or cold…just make sure there’s no rain in the forecast. And don’t even make me start cleaning in between. Lonely. Board.

Clean And Stain A Deck

It’s been a few days, but I finally got my first coat of paint. I really wanted to spend my time to get a good result. Little by little I saw the vision coming together.

The great thing about Water Based SuperDeck Stain is that it provides fast drying and repeat time. You can apply a few more coats in as little as 4 hours, and for semi-hard coverage, you should apply two thin coats for best results. Depending on the size of your project, you can complete it in a day with this product! After I finished the second layer, I let it dry overnight before putting everything back on the deck.

After about 48 hours, I ran a water test to see how well the stain would hold moisture, and it was great to see the water seep in and out immediately.

I think a lot of people were surprised when I said I was going to color the deck red because we used red for the construction and most people tend to leave the red deck in its natural state. It is a top quality wood that has all kinds of decay and nature/elemental resistance properties. It will turn a warm gray over time if left untreated or dyed. Of course, it was beautiful, but when we first built it, I knew that I wanted to paint it. I am very pleased with the end result. It looks beautiful and really makes the space feel like a resort.

If you are planning on getting into deck painting, I would definitely recommend Sherwin-Williams SuperDeck products. They also have an oil based formula which I will probably try the next time I need to paint a deck. I’m one of those weird people who really enjoys working with petroleum products because I love that it gives you a little more control over my application. It dries slower than water stains (which can be a disadvantage for many people), but it also gives you a little more wiggle room if you want to take your time and really get the product right.
