I recently had the opportunity to paint a large lobby ceiling for a client with Sherwin Williams Eminence. I thought I would write a review about my experience with this popular ceiling paint and whether or not I recommend it.

For years I have used Sherwin Williams CHB to paint ceilings because the paint covers so well in fewer coats and is inexpensive. I have used ProMar ceiling paint many times with great results, but both paints do not work and smell bad. I’m always looking for other colors to try.

For this painting project, my client wanted me to use Eminence to finish the surrounding ceilings that were already painted with this product. My experience with this ceiling paint has been mostly positive. In this article I will describe the likes and dislikes of this product.
Compared to other Sherwin Williams paints I’ve used, the Eminence ceiling paint definitely spattered and spattered less when I applied it. I painted a large ceiling and after two coats I barely got any paint on my face or hands. When I cut the corners of the ceiling with an extended brush, the paint didn’t drip onto the walls below or mess up the dripping fabric like other paints I’ve used.
In comparison, CHB paint covers well, but is very messy when blanketed, especially with a new roller. The paint spreads more than Eminence and other high quality paints I’ve used, and if you don’t wear gloves and carefully cover everything underneath, they will get covered in paint after you wrap the blanket.

Color coverage is important because no one wants to apply multiple layers. I found the overall transparency to be very good on the large ceiling I painted with the Eminence. The original paint was a darker white and the new paint covered well in just two coats using the standard Bright White paint. There were a few dark spots in the corners that I had to brush out, but overall I’d rate the color coverage four stars.
I rolled the blanket with a Sherwin Williams Soft Woven Roller (3/4 inch) and the paint rolled onto the drywall better than cheaper paints like CHB and ProMar Blanket Paint. This paint also dries flat, which I prefer for all exterior ceilings. bathroom and kitchen.
Super Paint Flat (Sherwin Williams) is another great option for painting ceilings. It’s not an official blanket color, but it covers really well with a coat or two. However, at $66 per gallon (full retail), the price can add up quickly when you need to buy more gallons. Super Paint Flat offers a perfect finish, but Eminence is a much cheaper paint that gets the job done at just $40 per gallon.

Super paint also has high VOCs in my experience, which is one of the reasons I switch to Duration Low VOC and other less odorous paints. Eminence still smelled when I used it, but the smell goes away after a few hours.
Since writing this review, I have used Eminence several times to paint ceilings. The color has good coverage and is not too expensive compared to more expensive premium colors. Unlike cheaper paints like ProMar Ceiling Paint and CHB, Eminence is less to work with.
The marketing of this color promises one coat coverage, but multiple coats may be needed to achieve good coverage if the colors are not similar. So, if you are painting your ceiling white over a darker color, I recommend priming the ceiling before using this product.

Eminence is certainly a worthy upgrade over some cheaper paints with lower opacity and higher VOCs, but the biggest challenge is finding this product in Sherwin Williams stores. Due to the lack of colors and raw materials, it may be very difficult to find this product in stock at this time. If you can’t find Eminence paint, my recommended alternatives for ceilings are CHB, ProMar ceiling paint, Super Paint Flat, or Benjamin Moore Regal Select flat color.

I once used Promar 400 Flat to paint large ceilings on a residential project with excellent results. I was originally going to use Eminence or CHB, but due to constant paint shortages, Promar 400 was the only flat paint at my local Sherwin Williams store.
To be honest, I’m not a huge fan of the Promar product line of 200, 400 and 700. These colors are usually aimed at rental properties and less important areas. In the past I used Promar 200 often for walls and this product is the best of the three, but there are better paints for walls. I used the 700 a long time ago and found the coverage to be terrible. Do not buy this color.
If your goal is to achieve a really flat surface with good coverage at a reasonable price, Promar 400 Flat Paint is for you. I achieved a solid finish in one coat with a few touch ups in the corners on painted ceilings. In terms of ease of application, this color doesn’t smudge as easily as other colors I’ve used, but has good coverage once it dries.

The paint is also VOC-free and dries quickly in an even layer. I would use this color again on the ceilings. I should also mention that official Promar ceiling paint works just as well if you can find it at your local store.
I have used Eminence several times for residential projects, including painting the high ceiling in the lobby. The color covers well in one or two coats. Now, of course, if you painted white on a dark color, you need to prime the ceiling first, but white-on-white paint will cover well.
Another thing I like about this ceiling paint is that it dries smooth, streak-free. When I’m not painting a bathroom ceiling, I like to use solid colors, but some “solid” ceiling colors are actually glossy and streaky. A good example is Behr ceiling paint. Don’t paint the ceiling with this stuff, it’s horrible. Eminence ceiling paint has no sheen. It is a true solid color like Promar 400.
