The Best Trim Paint

Quick note: LRV = Light Reflectance Value (measures the percentage of light a color reflects; a higher LRV means it reflects a lot of light)

With LRV 93 High Reflective White, SW 7757 is the whitest in the Sherwin Williams collection. It still has heat, doesn’t look yellow.

All of these things combine to make it a wonderful color not only for your countertops, but also for your kitchen cabinets.

It’s a beautiful pure white, although it’s a bit warmer, it works well with cooler colors and gray materials. Note that it can pick up on surrounding colors and be too muted against a very warm wall or floor with gold tones.

If you’re looking for an off-white color, Alabaster SW 7008 is another nice color from Sherwin Williams in LRV 82. It’s a softer white with a slight cream/pale green undertone.

In addition to trim, alabaster looks beautiful on walls (an alabaster-painted shiplap can make a nice accent wall). It usually works best with other colors that have warm undertones.

It looks beautiful in both north- and south-facing rooms, although it will be even warmer in southern or western evening light.

Snowbound SW 7004 with LRV 83 is hardly in the white category. It is a softer white with a hint of pink. Could go well with cooler tones, but I would stay away from whites or colors with yellow undertones.

If you plan to paint the walls and trim them white, Snowbound can be a good choice for both (for some depth, choose a semi-gloss paint for the trim and a satin paint on the walls).

Snowbound is a very popular color, although it is quite finished, so when using it as a trim or cabinet color, carefully consider wall colors and other materials!

Pure White SW 7005 is a soft and versatile white that is neither harsh nor creamy. It has the slightest touch of black and yellow that softens without leaning towards an off-white.

It takes on the color of its surroundings and can look very different depending on the surroundings, the time of day and the type of light reflected.

If you’re considering one of these colors, you may find that whites like cream and even the ever-popular Extra White are difficult to coordinate with wall colors. Because of their undertones, they aren’t as nice and pure white as the four suggestions above.

Now that we’ve looked at four great options for finishing your white Sherwin Williams, you might be wondering, “How do you narrow it down to one?”.

First, I’ll take a bleached sample of each white you’re considering (you’ll find direct links to each color above). I promise it’s way more affordable than buying all the paint and paint supplies, and it’ll save you a trip to the store.

Once you have the samples, move them from room to room, looking at each one in different types of lighting. Be sure to do this several times throughout the day, as the lighting will change dramatically as the sun moves from east to west.

As a general rule, any trim you plan to paint should be painted the same white for a cohesive look. You’ll also want to paint the doors and cabinets this white.
