Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore are two of the largest paint retailers in the US If you’re in the paint shop, you’re probably starting to wonder about the difference between the two. Both have many products and a dizzying number of colors.
We spoke to experts from five paint companies to get the inside scoop on both brands. For the most part, everyone said they both have good product lines backed by big R&D budgets. But there are a few situations where one is preferable to the other.

When we ask interior designers and colorists for advice on living room paint colors, they recommend a combination of both companies, but they often recommend Benjamin Moore’s additional options.

“Different brands have different strengths when it comes to color,” says color consultant Amy Wax. “If I go more in earthy grays and beiges and slate blues, I will look more in the Sherwin-Williams direction. With Benjamin Moore, sometimes they have bright colors, little strong colors.” ” he said. “So for me, what I’m trying to do is what paint company am I going to use.”
“I usually tell people to pick whatever color they want,” says Travis Nolan, founder of Old Crow Painting. Nine times out of 10, the two companies can match, he said.
However, he pointed out that Benjamin Moore’s aura line is a little harder to find. Matt Koontz, president of Five Star Painting, and Michael Kemper of M&M Precision Painting said Serwin-Williams has excellent color matching and mixing software.

Kemper said that even though some brands say you only need one coat, you should do a second coat with the walls first. “Put on two coats, and you’re guaranteed a high-quality finish,” he says.
“I have a lot of people who like to use Benjamin Moore’s Regal Select or Aura, especially if they live in high sun areas,” Koontz says.
Nolan cited Sherwin-Williams’ durability in Florida’s climate. When the sun heats the water molecules between the paint and the wood, they try to evaporate through the paint. “Basically, they’re going to strip the paint right off, that’s why we’re stripping it here,” he said. Durability dries quickly and holds heat and moisture well.

Koontz and Kemper both say that if your paint team is pushing a particular brand and brand of paint, it’s because they know how to get the best results with it.
“What we’re finding is that some teams will get very used to using a certain type of color, and they’ll lean toward it because they know it without thinking about it,” Koontz said. “They know the coverage rate. They know the right nap roller to use, whatever they need for that type of paint.”
Kemper likes to use certain products over and over for the same reason. “I know its characteristics, how it runs, what is the drying time, is it more suitable for running,” he said.

Almost everyone we spoke to recommended using a high-quality, expensive paint. With cheap paint, “If you hire a professional painter and you want to do a good job, in the end, they’re going to use more product to cover it, so it’s going to cost them more work,” Kemper. he said
Materials, including paint, make up about 10% of the total cost, so it makes sense to save on labor whenever possible, he said.
If you are painting yourself, the cost calculation will be slightly different than the professionals. The biggest value will be the product.

Although more expensive, self-leveling (trim) paints such as Benjamin Moore Aura or Sherwin-Williams Emerald Urtan can be more forgiving of wall imperfections and brush marks.
If you want a color that’s easy to hold, Kemper recommends Benjamin Moore. With Sherwin-Williams, “the more layers you use, the brighter it looks,” she says. While sheen (shiny spots on the wall that look like finished paint) tends to occur with bright colors rather than bright or flat colors, Kemper said Benjamin Moore’s satin feels lighter to the touch than Sherwin-Williams’ satin line.

Availability: Searching 11 zip codes from Alaska to Maine, we found Benjamin Moore in many places. However, they often have a limited selection, offering only the Ben line that is suitable for the brand’s budget.

Travis Nolan, founder of Old Crow Painting, said he likes to support local businesses and likes Benjamin Moore. But Michael Kemper, owner of M&M Precision Painting, said the company’s private stores may have inconsistent hours like Sherwin-Williams locations, which are often open on weekends, for example.
Customer service: The paint companies we spoke to were split between Benjamin Moore and Sherwin-Williams in terms of customer service. It seems to depend on the store managers and individual employees.
Colors: “I think Benjamin Moore offers the best colors,” says Kemper. And if you go with something vibrant, dark red or royal green or something like that, Benny Moore is the best choice.

With thousands of colors to choose from, choosing just one (or the entire palette) can be difficult. Both Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore have ways to help you find the right fit.
Color Chips: After you’ve chosen a specific color family or shade, you’ll want to start comparing different shades to each other. “Paint chips are a great way to help streamline the process,” says Sue Wadden, director of paint marketing at Serwin-Williams. It’s hard to tell if a color is warm or cool if you don’t have something next to it to compare it to.

Website tools: Laura Brocki of Brush Rite Painting said both companies have “amazing, easy-to-use websites where customers can go to choose their paint.” Both have software that lets you see what your room will look like painted a new color, but obviously it won’t be exactly the same.
Benjamin Moore’s personal color viewer lets you upload your photo and “paint” cabinets, walls, and more any color you want. The tools are easy to use and show the details well under the quality of digital paint. You must register with your email to use it.
Sherwin-Williams’s ColorSnap Visualizer is very similar. You can use your own photo or a company photo. The results are more subtle than what you’ll get with Benjamin Moore, but you don’t have to subscribe.

Serwin-Williams has another handy tool, the Snap It button, that creates color palettes from any image you want and matches the brand’s paint colors. It’s not perfect, but it gives a starting point.
