Spring heralds the arrival of warm enough weather to repair winter damage to woodwork. Repairing decks, fences and siding is a top priority as wood can start to deteriorate without further protection from nature.

In a hit or two, sunlight can break down the lignin that binds the wood fibers together, leaving a gray surface that can’t hold the finish. Water can then seep in, rotting the tile and shingles and damaging the structures below.

The beauty of the stain is that it is easy to apply, resists peeling, and brings out the grain or grain of the wood. But Stein’s change is surprising. Water-based acrylic stains are the most resistant to sunlight. Oil stains can penetrate deep into tropical hardwoods. A new hybrid blend does both, and is low in VOCs.
It depends on the type. Highly Pigmented Lasts Longer: Solid color stains last up to 7 years. Clear toners with a small amount of pigment need to be reapplied once a year.
Limit exposure to these elements before or immediately after installation. If necessary, it can be reapplied in the spring.
Choosing A Stain Color Is Tricky
Most homeowners can easily apply the stain with a brush or pump sprayer. For larger projects that require a lot of preparation, consider outsourcing it.
Because it contains less pigment than a solid color stain, it partially hides the wood grain. Does not leave a surface film; cannot be peeled off. Citation every 2-4 years.
Finely ground iron pigments, called peroxides, prevent wood grain from clouding and give it a warm color. Does not leave a surface film; cannot be peeled off. Recited annually.
How I Stained Our Deck With Sherwin Williams
Looks like flat paint; hides the wood’s grain, but not its grain. If used incorrectly, a release film will form. Citation every 5-7 years.
The wood contains enough pigment to change its color, but not enough to mask the grain. Does not leave a surface film; cannot be peeled off. Citation every 2-3 years.
If it’s bare, choose where you want it. But it’s easier to stick with if it has a cinematic ending; penetrating stains can’t penetrate the film. Also, water-based stains cover oil-based stains, but not vice versa.
Log Home Solid Stain
Softwoods such as pine and cedar are prone to stains. But only certain types of seed oils, like tung oil or linoleum, can absorb extremely dense hardwoods like ip and mahogany. Test the trees first to make sure the finish penetrates and dries.
On older decks, you’ll get the best protection from penetrating finishes such as clear toner, translucent, or semi-solid if you don’t sand the finish. Solid color stains work best on new wood.
If the stain is lighter in color, you’ll see more particles on the stack on the left. But the more color, the longer it can last before you need to reapply.

Spots on horizontal or south-facing surfaces receive more UV light than vertical surfaces or shady north-facing surfaces. Consider more pigmented spots for less maintenance.
These penetrating liquids seal the wood, preventing it from shrinking, splitting or rotting. But they have less pigment, which prevents the surface from graying.
One, usually containing wax or silicone, forms water on the surface; the other allows water to diffuse through the sheet. The “beads” usually deteriorate rapidly within a few months; when the cover stops, you know it’s time for a new coat.

A “page” can last for years. The water dries quickly on the fabric and doesn’t leave a pole-like stain, but there’s no indication that it’s time for a new coat.
These finishes are good for the environment and the lungs. The stain is filled with resin and solvent to allow the pigment to penetrate the wood fibers. The problem is that most oil-based stain solvents contain VOCs, which pollute the air and are bad for breathing.
Many “green” stains with less than 100 grams of VOC per liter rely on resins and pigments in the water, unlike traditional oils.

Water-based resin dries faster than oil, so you can get to your deck faster. But need to be more careful during application so as not to leave circle marks; brush the finish on more than two panels at a time, covering their length at a time. Also, when the surface temperature exceeds 50 degrees, paint should be done in a cool place.
Newer formulas are more durable and wear-resistant, but they don’t penetrate as deeply and quickly as oils, so it’s easy to over-apply and leave shiny patches. To avoid this, the coating should be brushed into a thin, uniform film. Wipe off excess immediately.
Nontoxic stains may not contain mold-inhibiting chemicals. If these fungi are a problem in your area, add a fungicide to the stain before applying.

Solid color stains mimic the look of flat oil paints used since colonial times. Today, however, the best stains are water-based, 100% synthetic resins that won’t chalk and harden as the oil ages. They have better water vapor permeability and are less likely to peel. Oh Siding… You Will Be The Death Of Me!
The unfinished finish on the coast takes on the color of natural cork after years of exposure to sun and salt air. In the late 1800s, Cabot developed a product called bleaching cream to speed up the process and prevent siding from rotting.
Basically, it’s a translucent oily stain with a light-colored pigment that contains a special bleach. When using new uncoated cork boards such as cedar, spruce and cypress, the surface will turn light grey after 6 months to a year. Citation every 3 to 5 years.
The wooden parts of wood and plastic laminate floors are just as susceptible to sunlight as hardwood and can stain over time. A special translucent stain from the composite material allows you to restore or change the color of the Weatherbeat Decking. These last a year or two. You can also use a standard solid color acrylic deck finish and get 3-5 years of service. In high-traffic areas, continuous attention is required.
