Valspar Solid Concrete Stain Colors – One of my big home goals for 2015 is to give the back patio an update. I think it was after the lumberjack party that I decided on the idea for the space. Having so many people at once made me realize that we really need an outdoor extension to our indoor living space. This was the back yard. ‘See what I mean? It definitely needs updating. It’s hard to tell from the picture, but the patio is about 400 square feet.
One of the most important things to do is to paint a concrete patio. Choosing the perfect paint color is difficult. I mean, let’s face it. If you have painted the interior walls gray and you do not like the color of the paint, you can paint over it in a few days. But I have no idea that is an option for artificial concrete. For weeks, I brainstormed ideas for paint colors. At first I thought it might be navy blue. So I thought maybe a gray battleship. White was almost blind in the hot Florida sun. We finally decided on Concrete Solid Color Stain/Sealer in Ember by Valspar. Tip #1 – Consider the exterior color of your home before committing to a color/paint color.

After deciding on the color, it’s time to clean the surface and collect the clothes. It was a happy day when we moved the patio furniture to the patio.

It took all afternoon, but I was able to remove most of the dirt with the pressure washer. They sell cleaning chemicals specifically for concrete at home improvement stores, something to keep in mind. The surface must be completely clean and free of stains before applying the stain. Tip #2 – Preparation is key.
The next morning, after the patio was completely dry, we started preparing the perimeter of the area for the ink. We used plastic sheets to protect the house and foundation to secure the leaves in place and painter’s tape.
We also made sure we had clear edges. This means pulling weeds and cutting back any grass that has grown too quickly in the field. This was really helpful when we started making spots.
I used a 4 inch brush to paint the trim and edges of the concrete. I was really surprised by the consistency of the color. It’s really thin. We finished the first coat of trim in about an hour. Tip #3 – Make sure you use the right tools for the job.

I am very happy that we have made great progress. We put a row of paint on the painting table and pour the stain. We turned the paint roller on the extension. Then slide the roller cover specially designed for use with roughened concrete into place and get to work.
We were so busy painting the trim and the little patio, we didn’t notice that the afternoon clouds were rolling in. It felt cold, but to be honest, I didn’t care. After all, there is only 20% rain. I ignored the little drops as best I could and the heavens opened. It will rain for the next 7 hours. I have never wanted to cry on concrete so bad in my life. Tip #5 – Make sure there is ZERO chance of rain during your painting/cleaning project.
The next day, after the concrete was completely dry (you’ve heard that before, right?) we started painting the patio again and this time there wasn’t a cloud in the sky. The first full coat went on without incident
In total, it took 6 and a half gallons of paint to complete this project. I know! 6 and a half liters of paint for 400 square meters of space. The label says it will cover about 200-500 square feet per can. But the roughness of the concrete just absorbs the stain like a sponge. Also, did I mention the rain? I’m glad we stuck with it despite the obstacles.
