When it comes to cream colors, there are fewer problems than Sherwin Williams Antique White. As a wall paint, this stuff is nice, but it is used too often on kitchen cabinets or decor and that’s where the problems start.

Antique Cream has an LRV of 72 and can be a GREAT depth for your walls if you want a cream with a little more body than other popular cream colors. However, it is not so deep that it seems heavy or dated.
However, the vintage White’s LRV is one of the reasons it’s not a great decor or cabinet color. The “average” LRV for trim and cabinet paint is 82-94. With 72 LRV, you are looking at a color that is almost white and falls in the “light” range, so there is a little more meat on the bones compared to traditional off-white or off-white colors. this
1. As a cabinet or decor color, it obviously wants to work with colors that are at least a tone or two off, which can be darker than most people want to go when painting more than one room or at any time. Updated to a more modern look.

In this next photo you can see the antique white on the kitchen island as well as the trim. While it blends well with the stone fireplace, notice how creamy it is compared to the tone of the travertine floor. I mean, they are doable, but a little strong.

In the next photo you can see the strength of the antique white in these windows. My clients asked me to find new cabinet colors because the antique white cabinets clashed with the tile backsplash.
Those beautiful undertones make antiques a little more difficult than decor or cabinet color. Some cream colors have a stronger neutral base. The more neutral the color, the more vibrant it is… and Ancient White has more striking colors than I expected.

Ahhh, there it is – the golden question (literally). With a more golden approach than Antique White and a lower than average LRV (related to decor/cabinet), Antique White BIT is subtle. But as long as you follow a few rules, you’ll be fine!

WARM COLORS COLORS help soften the approach of Antique White as they blend in a bit. Warm colors include cream, blue and brown.
Cooler paint colors “tone” the antique white and add warmth/yellow, making it a bit more intense. Cool colors include gray (with anything that works), blue, green and purple. Although it is considered a warm color of paint, this also includes green.
Another helpful tip is to look for colors with an LRV of around 50 or LOWER. There are very few lighter colors that will work (other than beige/cream like classic white). Does the LRV need to be brushed? Read this.

Personally, I’m only considering the Bee range because I think the cool tone reacts too much with the Ancient White, making it too powerful and the synth too counterintuitive – but that doesn’t concern me (not always though.. .).
If you want to offset the yellow of your antique white trim or cabinets, you can apply a dark brown, but that doesn’t mean you have a ton of flexibility, it just neutralizes the yellow a bit.
